The Old & the New [BJDs & Precious Childhood Possessions]

Sep 16, 2009

    1. Lets see photos of your favourite BJD (or more if you really can't choose just one) with your favourite possession. It can be anything at all as long as it's something very precious to you and old...something you've had since childhood.

And if you like, tell us a little bit about them. :)

      ----------------------------------------

      I'll go first. :)

Here's Daelyn (Iplehouse Mars) with Orange Dog. Daelyn was my very first BJD and I've had him for almost a year now. Orange Dog is a bean-bag puppy that I've had for 32 years. He's been all over the world with me on family vacations, almost got lost several times on said vacations (eek!), and was even forced to go through the security scanners a few times in the Bahamas (back in the day when they were worried about people smuggling drugs inside their children's toys). He also had a major accident many years ago...one of our dogs got ahold of him and chewed his eyes and nose off. My mom had to perform transplant surgery. :P

He's had a long, rough life, but he's very well made and has held up surprisingly well. He's definitely my favourite and most loved toy from childhood and I still look at him every day (he sits on the top of my computer desk). He'll be with me until the day I die...and so will my BJDs. :)

Roy is an Action Man I've had my whole life, all his fingers from his left hand rotted away and His hair has been loved off a bit but to me he's just as beautiful as Pashley. :aheartbea

      The Velevteen Rabbit

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When someone loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."
"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."
"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"
"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept.

"Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand... once you are Real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always.”

    11. Jacobean thanks for posting that quote from "The Velveteen Rabbit". I've always loved that story.

Here is my sweet Michael with Brownie, a plush dog that I got when I was born. Brownie is 36 years old now, and I still love him, albeit in a different way than I did when I was a child. The beige parts of him used to be pure white, but no matter how much I wash him, he'll never be white again. It doesn't matter though. He is very special and well-loved.
      [IMG][/img]

Here's Rommie with my CPK, Martha. I got Martha when I was eight years old, making her 28 years old now. O.o. I got Martha as a gift before going to the hospital for surgery, and Martha actually went to the hospital with me. Martha is wearing her original outfit, except without the socks and her original hair ribbons. They got lost somewhere along the way.

    13. This pic is a year old (the doll shelf has undergone massive renovation in the meantime), but here's my present-day grail doll holding my childhood grail doll:

The big kid is Christine, my Iplehouse Stella. She's the avatar of a very old, very dear OC of mine. I'd been on the lookout for the right sculpt when Iple released her LE ... I had to wait for her to go basic to get her as I was in the middle of moving house, but she was the first BJD to come home. :D

The little one is Cheerleading Courtney. I fell in love with her picture somewhere and couldn't find her anywhere in stores near me ... until one day I spotted one last battered box on a shelf someplace (I think we'd been visiting someone and I'd talked Dad into checking the toy store because I was still hunting for this doll). She had a messed-up ankle (outer layer of vinyl had come loose and eventually tore with the strain from her shoes) but I didn't mind and just incorporated it in her backstory. Yep, my Barbies had backstories ... old habits die hard  That doll was taken everywhere. I even took her on a class trip when I was 12 (long after most other girls had stopped playing with dolls ... do you smell foreshadowing?) and made her a rain-proof jacket before the trip because we were going on an island and the North Sea has a certain reputation when it comes to weather. I even ended up taking her on the fishing boat trip in the pouch of my own jacket. She stayed dry, I didn't :sweat
Also, both dolls are wearing self-made clothes. That "habit" will never die. :)

    15. I'm glad this one kicked up because I just realized my oldest and most 'loved' doll will be 50 years old in September.
Here is Ash my beloved boy with my oldest and only girl. She got a wig upgrade last year as her old original hair is frizzed beyond saving, but she still has her original faceup and dress..:)
I begged everyone to give me $ for my 13th birthday so I could buy her. She was only sold at Neiman-Marcus, the year was 1964. She is a vinyl and cloth doll, her posing wires are so bent that her arms are much shorter than they actually are, poor baby. She still lives with me.

    16. There is this marble I've had since I was in primary school. I've lost it once, and it returned; I've moved so many times, yet here it is. Precious childhood memories - tell me, Adam, does it show you what's in the future? - Just took one quick pic, but I like the idea so much I need to make proper time for it soon.

    18. My first bjd, Apollo, with Rabbit! They have the same hair/fur color, too :) Rabbit's one of several old Toy's R Us Animal Alley rabbits I have - I used to keep up with all the new fur colors they released when I was in elementary school. Rabbit's the only one that comes with me to college; my first one, Rose, is white and I don't want to risk her getting lost or dirty.

    19. This thread is really cute, I love seeing everyone's pictures! Here is my contribution.

I begged my mom to buy Brer Bear for me (I was 4), and she really didn't want to as he was somewhat expensive for a stuffed animal. Well, here he is ;) He has a really cute, classic teddy bear look and his arms and legs have joints so he is somewhat poseable. He still sits on a shelf in my bedroom <3

Since Mack is one of my most treasured BJDs, it was fitting that he was the one chosen to be in the picture. It's fun to see how different BJDs are from "children's toys" :)

For comparison, Mack is a Soom Phonolus Dollers Pageant GS Version who arrived in 2015. Brer Bear is a Brer Bear from the North American Bear Company made in 1994.

    20. I really have too many bjds to pick a favorite, but I think that Abigail (Dolls be with you... Carrot) is best suited for this photo.
I remember my Mom taking me with her to visit a group of Italian women, wives of the growers in the Salinas Valley, California, at the Castroville home of one of them, and they were all making these stuffed horses for some fund raiser, probably involved with the Church. The horses were made from many different colors and fabrics but when I got to choose one for myself I picked this guy because he reminded me of a zebra. That made him special to me.
