Theme The Old School is in Session! (community gallery for old-school BJDs)

Apr 28, 2018

    1. This thread is a spin-off from @Silk's General Discussion thread For the Love of Old-School. Please post pictures of your "old-school" dolls, and celebrate their glorious bobble-headed quirkiness here!

Flynn (Customhouse Ainomori Jun 2nd, 2003) and Claudine (Customhouse Limited Sia, also 2003) are delighted to start the proceedings:

    2. Hoorah for old school! Beautiful couple @Cynthia in FlintHills <3

Bambi, my old F10 (sorry, sure everyone is sick of the sight of her by now, I post her everywhere!):

I have a few other oldies, but they are not currently presentable as they await face-ups and bodies ;) Looking forward to seeing more beautiful old school BJDs here soon!

    3. Cynthia, I'm moving this to Photo Reference and hope that's ok with you. It would be a wonderful reference especially now after the Photobucket fiasco has decimated so many older photo posts in the galleries, in the Databases and in Photo Reference.

How about a 2006 Shiwoo MNF? We were just reminiscing at a recent doll meet about how there was a time when all the minifees were only Lishe, El or Shiwoo--

    4. Yassssss my favorite doll aesthetic! The dolls that looked like dolls! XD

Here's a head comparison I took of my Type 1 Delf Shiwoo (so circa 2006 or earlier), K-doll Kill_U 1st (from the final release), 2008 Dollshe Husky, and 2011 Volks Kanata.

    5. Since we have a Shiwoo theme going . . . here's Robin Löwe, an Elf Shiwoo (who started out WAY back in the day as one of Aziza's twins -- anybody remember Aziza who made fur wigs??):

    6. This pic is a few years old now, but even so it really shows how much my SDC Kurenai has yellowed (I honestly can't even call it mellowing at this point :XD:) compared to my newer dolls. She was my first and is still my favorite though. I love my weird little butter-colored girl :whee: And her original faceup is what made me fall in love with her, it's so different from how Volks does things now.

    7. @RamenDoodles, she's beautiful! She looks about the same color as my SD Megu, Okaru -- Okaru came from that first generation of pureskin that started out darker than other Volks NS, and had nowhere to go but yellow. ;)

    10. I haven't taken recent photos of my old school BJD in a while, but I still own them and two of them look exactly the same.
They spend all of their lives in my closet, so they are 100% dust free and away from the sun all the time. (:

My CP/Lust VDES head sculpt on a Volks DDI body, she was my very first BJD/hybrid, I got her head in early 2005:

My SoulDoll Paris, my very first complete resin BJD, and my first BJD love:

The two DZ are in the process of being modified, so they've changed, but not due to age:

    11. Ahhh so many amazing old sculpts!! <3

This is Blue, my Delf Art Lolita Soony. She is in pretty immaculate condition due to being kept in a box most of her life by her previous owner. She has her original face up which is BEAUTIFUL (and outfit, which she never wears  except the skirt and stockings, which she never takes off!)

    12. Never thought I'd see a Sakura, Soony, Vampire Shiwoo, ancient Dollzones and Sakaki again :D. And customhouse dolls. Man, that brings me back.

Here's my Gomidoll Iru-HS. Since Gomidoll only sold heads, I've put him on a Dollstown 7y boy body.

And my Elfdoll K-SS (mod) on a Domuya Flexibody, which has yellowed terribly XD

    13. Oooh, I'm feeling so nostalgic right now! :love Just back online after a looong weekend and so happy to see your "old" dolls. Luts Dambi and Souldoll Paris, haven't seen these for ages! And Gomidoll! I almost forgot the company existed.

Here are a few of my old-school beauties:
      Parker - K-Doll Special Kill_U

Webster - Dollzone tan Floy (lightly modded)

[IMG]Storm - Iplehouse Ryushin by Evie ex Machina, on Flickr

And the most recent addition to my crew and current muse: Beowulf - Volks Amakusa (with the original old-schoool faceup, too …)

    14. Now, if it's Amakusa you want...

Hideo, who's still with his original-issue face-up and eyes...

The Archivist ("Archie" to his friends-), who's had some modification (and seriously needs a new faceup-)...

... and Shimon, my Saifa one-off

I may have a bit of an obsession with this guy. I wasn't kidding back in the Volks thread when I said that if I had unlimited cabinet space and unlimited funds, I might well find myself buying every Amakusa that came up for sale.

    15. I love this thread! I have a few from my crew to add! None have original faceups but they've still been around a long time!

My CP Delf Soony, Inanna (her faceup has been touched up since this photo but I don't have any good pictures of it. I need to get on that!)

My CP Delf Dreaming Shiwoo, Andrien

    16. I love seeing all these classic sculpts! Old School is definitely my preferred aesthetic, and I do have quite a few who are legitimately "old" too.

To start with, my only two big boys, a pair of rescued CP Delfs. Both are modded dreaming heads; Jace (El) came to me as a former practice head who was stained and missing his ears (the modder who replaced his ears also opened his eyes for me), and Ed (Shiwoo) arrived already modded, dirty and with severe uneven yellowing. I already had fallen in love with these sculpts, but the work to get them looking good again just made me love them even more. (Their ages are totally unknown to me; the sales listing for Ed had multiple ages listed, and I never really got all that information on Jace...)
[IMG]The day winding like dreams by vicemage, on Flickr

I got the two of them after falling in love with my MNF Shiwoo (Ed). Yes, he's a bit newer vintage, but he's still the old sculpt (and I really wish they'd bring him back, though at the same time I just might keep buying Shiwoos if they did...), and still has the old-school aesthetic:
[IMG]Folded wings (close) by vicemage, on Flickr

And here's an old picture of my first doll who got me started in the hobby, a BBB Sprite on a boy body (Gabriel) from 2007-2008-ish. He's on a new body though, but he's still a nice old sculpt. :)
      [IMG]blushed15 by vicemage, on Flickr

Lastly, this lovely AoD lady--who is actually the male sculpt Yo/You (Esa), also from 2008; she and the one I ordered at the same time are tied for my second doll, and both still very much part of my collection. (And whenever I get him refreshed I'll get some new pictures of him.)
[IMG]Esa at Como Park by vicemage, on Flickr

(I've also recently purchased a MNF El, because I just can't shake my love of those classic CP sculpts!)

    17. My Volks Madoka on Dollstown 15y girl body:

And Cicero, original SwD Lucas from 2003 (can't help it, but this boy is still my favorite :chibi):

    18. Yes, old school dolls! My fave aesthetic.

My oldest man, Natsume, a Bluefairy May boy who came to me in 2003.

My original release Esthy Peroth, Keigo. I remember when the first photos of Peroth were released and we all freaked out hoping for an international release. I ordered him during that initial weekend only period, and he's been with me ever since.

Both of these ladies now live with my dear friend Rachel, but a 2002 Sakura from Volks initial MSD release and a 2004 Nagisa

    20. Yes! He has been my only unplanned purchase in all the years. The thought that he would never have another release and would only be sold overseas was too much XD.

My boy is also still with me, although he needs a new face-up:

    21. My first! Elurin, CP Delf Elf El, bw, purchased in 2004 from CP through Liria, wearing Azurielle coat and Forest of Avalon wings, Souldoll eyes, original CP faceup with some mods. Photo from 2011. (note that he looks ns more than bw... he was never paper white, more "creamy" white... and some of that is the photo color correcting... but he is definitely less white than he used to be!)
      [IMG]11-06-Fairy-Elurin_7491 by aprilllee, on Flickr

1.a. Elureth, CP Delf Elf El, Vampire, 2004, Dreaming Head, bw, came with my OE Elf El. No default faceup, faceup by me. Note: although they came together, this head is more white (I think the yellowing of my CPs are mostly due to old MSC... pre-UV-Cut.). He's almost more green than creamy, which makes me think he came from a different resin batch!
      [IMG]09-12-april-SDMiniCon_7495 by aprilllee, on Flickr

      2. Lothiriel, CP Delf Elf Lishe, OE, bw, purchased in 2005 from CP through Liria. No faceup available, faceup by me. Note: there is some yellowing visible in the head--the body is newer by a number of years. I think it's mostly the MSC, which was the old pre-UV-Cut version.
      [IMG]13-03-ElvesGreen_0427a_ws by aprilllee, on Flickr

2.a. Laliel, CP Delf Elf Lishe, 2005 Dreaming head, bw, came with Elf Lishe. No faceup available, faceup by me.
      [IMG]05-01-lishe-154a449x600 by aprilllee, on Flickr

2.b. CP Delf Elf Lishe, 2005, Vampire head, bw. (no photo on a body so far). Hopefully soon... (yeah, I'm glacially slow getting some dolls done!)

      3. Ydrahil, CP Delf Elf Yder, 2005, bw, purchased from CP through Liria. No faceup available, faceup by me.
      [IMG]07-03-Pasadena-Yder-081a471 by aprilllee, on Flickr

3.a. CP Delf Elf Yder, 2005, sleeping head, modded to dreaming by me. No faceup available, no faceup yet. No photos on body yet (I told you I was slow).

      4. Irime, Luts Juri 2005 gift head, bw, with original faceup (very slight faceup mods), purchased on Marketplace in 2005. Wearing Lady Morghayne/Forest of Avalon outfit and wings. Note: some overall yellowing, partially due to old MSC.
      [IMG]11-06-Fairy-Juri_7486 by aprilllee, on Flickr

      60. Mina, Luts Miyu, ns, 2005?. I got her as a gift from a friend in 2014. wearing PamSD dress.
      [IMG]14-02-Miyu-4814a by aprilllee, on Flickr

That's my CP/Luts crew from back in the day. Still owned by me and enjoyed. :kitty1

    22. LOVE THIS!
Here is Rune, My first bjd Volks F-12 (Sinsha/Misha), I got in 2006. But she had already gone through two or three other owners. One of them modded her eyes to be larger so she can take I think 20 or 22, but I never changed her eyes. When I bought her she was on the older DOD body which I eventually bought her a volks SDCute body. She will always be in my collection. Edit: So yeah I never get rid of my dolls it seems XD Though Rune is by far my oldest, I have kept almost every doll that I bought since 2006. Here's a few:

My old boy Ruvik. He's a DollZone Yuu I got from FeatherFall way back in 2008. He's gone through a few character changes but he's still standing strong, even has his original factory face up.

    27. In August, 2006, Volks has a Tea Party at their Los Angeles Mansion. It was the first Volks event I attended. Very lovely sunny day with ocean within sight. With many Volks events, there's the offering of One-Offs for sale by lottery (you are given a ticket and can put it in a box by the One-Off of your choice and if your ticket is drawn you can buy that One-Off). I had always heard they were hard to get... I saw a Shirou Tachibana (one in the back of this trio). He was one of the dolls I had been looking at for my first bjd, but of course was sold out. I dropped my ticket in the box. When my name was called, I nearly had a heart-attack! In those days, it was nearly impossible to see a doll and buy it and take it home that day... so that was also an unusual experience.
      [IMG]06-08-VolksTeaParty-P8050157 by aprilllee, on Flickr

The next month, Aimee Major Steinberger (one of the founders of DoA), and others organized a Tea meet at the Huntington Gardens. Here he is in his One-Off outfit in the Japanese Gardens--

Month after that in October, there was a Volks Halloween Party at the L.A. Mansion. Of course, I dressed up and I dressed my Shirou up. Here he is in the Costume "Customization" contest. I got an honorable mention and gift certificate from Miki because he was one of her Tokyo boys (certificate went towards a doll stand at the L.A. Volks store)--

    28. So many beauties here - where have you been hiding? I'm usually more interested in boys, but, man, there are such lovely girls here.

Here's one pic for the oldschool faceup lovers: My Customhouse Uri still has her original faceup. It's very light and minimal, but she looks so cute like this.

    30. Just arrived -- Olive, a Domadoll Assi from 2007 (formerly pookafey's Ophelia, if I'm connecting up the eBay seller's name correctly with the older posts and pictures here on DoA):

I've been attracted to Domadoll's big girls for a long time, but never had one cross my path at the right moment. I love her broad cheekbones and wide mouth -- I really think Domadoll was ahead of her time with this sculpting style. The body isn't bad, either, though I will probably mod or get someone to mod the wrist balls so Olive's hands can move a little more freely.

Volks Cyndy 2, Ltd., SD-13 new girl body, pureskin. I think was originally released at the Kyoto Dolls Party 3 in March 2005. She was gifted to me by fantasy artist Nene Thomas (because she's a friend and knew I was into bjds), arriving by surprise for Christmas in 2006.

    33. A very old picture of a Parrish Blu (2005 HyperManiac Na-Hu). Who's resides somewhere, in a box, at the back of my closet. He desperately needs to be cleaned and repainted.

    35. Here is my very special girl, Poetta...a creative writer who writes all my doll’s stories.:) She is a Volks SD10 F-03 SwD Kira. She was a gift to myself to celebrate all my years in the hobby, and the wonderful serendipity of it is that she turned out to have actually been made on my exact hobby anniversary date (August, 2006)!

    36. Love this thread! I have to confess almost all the oldies I have home are Volks! (Which isn't nostalgic at all, since when I arrived in the hobby I wasn't at all into them!).

      Volks Souseiseki:

      Volks Nana Sweet Dreams

Volks F-07 (special discontinued edition), probably the oldest I have

Notdoll Lab Bleu Citron (not sure if she's that old tho? It seems like ages ago to me ah ha)

    37. @Darkdojy, always love seeing F-07! I miss all the original FCS girls, even though I definitely thought they were strange-looking when I first joined the hobby. (To be fair, those early face-ups didn't do much to er..."enhance" the unusual sculpts.)

      • x 2
    38. I also love your F-07 @Darkdojy . Actually most f the old Volks sculpts are growing on me since face-up art has developed so much.

Guess what? I spent 12 years in the BJD community without ever owning an El* - until now …
My friend gave me her very old cutie in a trade and finally he got a new look and life. Went for a little purple and earth colors scheme and gave him those little tusks for extra cuteness.

*When I joined the community, everybody owned at least one El. Don't know If people even took me seriously back then when I didn't … ;)

    39. I love this! All of my resins are oldies, the oldest being my AR Ren and Dana:

Lumi (Ren girl, made some time in the early 2000s, probably around 2006-8, Dana's probably the same age) is my favorite resin and one of my all-time favorite dolls, period! With vinyl dolls I'm all about getting them NIB, mint, etc, but with resins I 100% prefer them to be older and yellowed; it gives them a haunting, eery beauty imo. I'm still shocked that I managed to find two AR girls with their default faceups, eyes and full stock outfits. Definitely my favorite resin line (with Classic BF dolls coming in second, which hilariously were sculpted by the same people and have the exact same body as AR) Hopefully I'll find Cien and Seio eventually too.

    40. @lunar-dream304, your Littlefair girls are adorable! I enjoy seeing pics of the older companies' dolls in their default face-ups :3nodding:

Here's my Littlefair crew, all bought back in 2007, and all but one from the secondary market, still with their default face-ups. I'm so glad I bought them, and they still make me smile --

    43. Talking of Old School...

Henry is a discontinued Volks MSD F10 in sunlight...he needs a new faceup as I'm not sold on the angry eyebrows, but I think he's a sweetie...

And then there's Victoria and Marishka - an F16 and an old F28 in a pic taken in 2007. Victoria now has red hair but this was how she arrived to me after being painted by Patti Eacret, while Marishka was modded and painted by Ravendolls - I found her so perfect that I even took her character name when I adopted her...

    44. I have a new girl to add to this gallery!

I recently got this super yellowed Oldskin Mika, specifically the Beauty White version from the 2004 Character Expo! Apparently they only made 45 of her which was really interesting to find out. I found her on FB a month ago and I just loved her aged appearance, coupled with her very light faceup and haunted expression.

I decided to enhance her age rather than counteract it, so I gave her a blonde wig and kept the beige dress she came in. She has new eyes coming with more depth, but I like how these ones make her look haunted, almost organic. The Oldskin body is a little finicky but she makes it work!

Side note, I now understand why Oldskin dolls are often called 'beauty green' lol

    45. She doesn't look green in the photo! She looks lovely!

I need to contribute more to this thread. Since it's unlikely I'll be affording many new dolls, the older crew needs to work for their keep!

    46. Almost all my dolls are old school. I like old school models because I've been in this hobby for many years now, although I bought my first just 14 years after I discovered them.
They are, from top: DOT Lahoo, Super Dollfie Magical Michael, Teenie Gem Glot-Dream Caller (not sure if she is old school), DOC Kirill and a Dolkot Star Kiss white skin.(on FDoll body).

    47. @lunar-dream304 she's lovely! The blonde/beige colors suit her so well.

    48. Thank you! Her yellowing is definitely a little more cool-toned than my other oldies, so it looks slightly green in comparison! Regardless I think she's beautiful, a very gloomy and monotone kind of beauty!

Thank you! Luckily I dress my dolls almost exclusively in off-white, brown and beige so she has quite the wardrobe already!

    49. Its so sad that so many great BJD companies have closed since I got into this hobby. In memory of DIM (Doll in Mind), which closed it's doors at the end of April, here is my ancient R-Asiam.

I got Dorian in 2006, and he's still in great shape. He was one of the first dolls I bought from a lovely doll shop in Florida, which has also closed. He was never a popular sculpt, but I really love his quirky little face. I'll never let this guy go.

A very fond and heartfelt farewell to DIM...thanks for the memories old friend. :pout:(And lovely dolls.)

    50. He's so handsome and I remember that shop, that's where my friend got her DIM, who now lives with me.

    51. Thank you Ballet! Those early DIM sculpts were my favorites.

Wow! You remember that doll shop in Florida? It was called Sunrise Doll Shop. The lady who ran it was so sweet. I bought my very first BJD from her, also a DIM sculpt; a DIM Persia. :aheartbea

Which DIM doll do you have? Would love to see a picture!

    52. Before I even got my first dorrie (MSD) and the time that owning SD's seem intimidating, the Delf El had always been my dream dorrie and was ecstatic when I had the chance to buy his head in the DoA Marketplace second hand. As luck would have it, Fairyland had an event last 2011 when you can buy their SD bodies separately. :)

So here's my Luts Delf El in a Fairyland 60cm boy body. Excuse the slight color mismatch due to resin age:

    55. Going through an old hard drive and found photos from the very first doll meet I ever attended. Thought it might be fun to share here as it kinda shows what was popular at the time, at least in my local community. This was I think somewhere around Jan./Feb. 2007.

    56. Here is a recently taken photo of my 1999 Volks Megu, who is as old school as they come!

Faceup by me and she's wearing the wig from the 2010 renewal Megu release.

    57. Hmmm … does Dollshe Hound even count as "oldschool"? Well, my boy is definitely old, from 2005 or so. I "inherited" him from my (now deceased) friend and he's now part of my crew. His name is Dima (for now, let's see if it sticks).
I gave him a fresh face-up recently - his old one was the first commission I ever painted and needed a change …
