Contest The Jungian "Shadow" [Photography]

Jul 9, 2011

    1. Description

This is a contest to create a single photographic image exploring the idea of Jung's "Shadow" - in keeping with our anniversary theme, 'Me and My Shadow'.

      Important Dates

Deadline for entries: Friday, August 19, 12:00am EDT (midnight)

      Voting period: August 22-28

      Winner announced: Wednesday, August 31

      How to Enter

      1. Ponder a way to photographically represent the Jungian "Shadow". There are many websites you can visit and read about the Shadow. You may explore this as an individual "shadow" or the "collective shadow". We can share links and thoughts/ideas in the ensuing discussion as you prepare to capture your image.
If the idea of exploring this complicated psychological concept through doll photography feels overwhelming or perhaps even trite to you, don't write off this year's Anniversary contests - please consider entering one of our two other Photography contests - the Photostory Contest or the Silhouette Contest!
      2. CREATE. The Idea of the psychological shadow may be something that immediately ushers in a strong visual image for you - great! Go to it! Or it may be something you need to read about and think about. You might want to spend some time letting the idea bubble beneath the surface of your consciousness and when it surfaces you'll be in a better position to sieve through what your unconscious self has visualized.
      3. Set up your shot. Images can be manipulated in any way the photographer deems necessary to achieve the desired affect. This means both in-camera and/or in software.
      4. Save your file in JPG. JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side, with resolution of 72 dpi. Oversized images or images sent in the wrong format will be disqualified.
      5. Send the .jpg to us. Entries will be accepted using a form that will become available on August 1st.

      Entry form now available!
      HERE!

When voting is open, your image will be shown anonymously.

      Rule

      1. You may NOT post or share the image in any way on any forum before the votes are tallied. Discovery of cross-posting will result in disqualifying your image from the contest.
      2. This contest is open to all members who are in good standing who have joined on or before June 30th, 2011

      Prize
The winner will receive an Asleep Eidolon Cherry Boy, generously donated by Asleep Eidolon.

The second and third place winners will receive forum upgrades that double their PM inbox storage. :)

    2. Is it okay to have off topic dolls in the background, as long as an on topic bjd is the main focus?

    3. Absolutely!

    4. Man, this one's got me thinking -- thanks for the links to more info. I may disagree with some of the therapy applications of the concept, but the basic idea, including the "golden shadow", is fascinating. Now to pin up the deadline in a lot fo conspicuous places in my apartment!

    5. Will entries be rejected if they're not seen as following the theme enough? I have an idea, but I'm always afraid of being rejected on entry. XD

    6. That's a great way to keep reminding your unconscious that you're working on this theme!

No entries will be "rejected" unless they are late, oversized, or posted somewhere before the judging starts. Take your idea and run with it!

    7. That is pretty interesting actually, i will have to get thinking how i can pull something cool off :)

I also have a rules question, i know that you are not allowed to post the entry you decide on. But if you are playing with more then one idea but chose not to use them is it OK to post those else where?

Obviously none from the same shoot, but ones where you have played with the concept?

    8. Be careful with that. If the doll, scenery, lighting, etc., is in any way identifiable to the submitted entry, you could risk disqualifying yourself. Once the voting is over you can post all your work wherever you like!

    9. If it is just the same doll and he other things are different, would that be OK? Because if i played with idea's with would be different ones and wouldn't have things in common with the other idea's.

    10. How many times are you allowed to enter? Can you enter one contest more than once, and can you enter more than one contest? LOL....I hope that made sense.

    11. Sounds like you need to decide on your own whether it could potentially be risky or not.

You may certainly enter all of the contests!!! You may enter each contest one time only, though.

    12. I think mainly i was worried about it from a rules point of view. But if you would be if it was just the same doll. I could double check with some people (who are outside the hobby) if they look different enough. Would that be OK?

Thanks so much for you help so far though, it has really been helpful. :)

    13. If you can't wait until after the voting is over to post your other attempts; then its completely your choice and your decision.

    14. OK i will have a think about it think and not post them if i think it could get me kicked out of this contest :)

    15. I love, love, love this contest. :aheartbea

Quick question -- the rules state that an entry is one image. Would it be acceptable to have multiple photos in one image? For example, could a participant submit a single image that consists of two photo panels?

I hope my question makes sense. Many apologies if it doesn't -- it's late and I need coffee. :XD:

    16. It is not our intention to splinch anyone's creativity with concrete guidelines....but I can't really say, yes, this is okay because it is a single image contest....however, if your muse is presenting an image to you which needs to be conveyed in a certain fashion - then go for it!

    17. Wow.. I actually really love the idea of this contest.

    18. Me, too! But I can't enter...so I'm just thinking of all the ways it could be interpreted - the photographer's "shadow", the collective unconscious' "shadow" regarding toys/dolls, the doll's "shadow". !!!

    19. Oh, I can't wait to put the picture in...! [flails]

    20. I've been experimenting a bit...

    21. I'm very excited for this contest. Personally, I think the theme is very cool. I do have a question, though. I know that each entry is a single image. Am I correct in assuming every participant is allowed only one entry? I hope that's not a dumb question, but this is the first anniversary event I've been around for.

One entry per person does seem fair; I'm simply wondering because I have a few good shots and choosing only one is going to be difficult!:sweat

      Thank you!

    22. This has already been answered, see earlier posts. You can enter each contest only once, so that means one entry per person.

    23. Thanks. I did read the thread a few times but I think I missed the answer because it was posted with the answer to another question as well. Of course I saw it right away after you pointed out the question had been answered.

Actually, one more question. The doll I have chosen to shoot for this contest has a very distinct mod. I know we are supposed to submit our entries anonymously, so other photos we post should not enable voters to identify which entry is ours. However, those who are familiar with my doll may be able to identify it from the mod. Is that permissible?

I mean mods and distinctive features on the doll specifically, not just similar shots, which were asked about earlier.

    24. Interesting theme! I'm off to contemplate resin shadows...

    25. This is a neat theme, which I'm pondering. I take it from the rules there are no limits on what you can use in your photo- just on topic dolls with one image? I have an idea that I'm hoping will work, but will need the use of props for effect. Are props allowed in the photo?

    26. Those with highly recognizable dolls will encounter this issue in most of our contests. Perhaps the challenge for you would be to shoot your image in such a way that the doll is not easily and quickly recognized? Get creative!

I've been contemplating it, too, and trying out ideas for my own entertainment - I'm not entering this contest, of course. It's been proving delightfully challenging!

The sky is the limit and that might be a good prop, too!

    27. We just finished learning about Jung's idea of the Shadow in our unconscious. I might try this one!

    28. Maybe I'm missing something but...where's the form?

    29. >.> *sheepish*for a non-photoshop user, how can you reduce the DPI?

    30. What software do you have?

And this is a GREAT question - does anyone else have resizing questions?!

    31. ^_^;; In terms of photo editing? None. I generally just play with lights and shadow. I used an online resource once to give a photo an effect, but it doesn't have the type of ability that photo editing software does.

    32. Thank you for your suggestion. ^_^ I'll play around and see if I can't get something to work.

    33. Woohoo. Got it.

    34. The first post has been updated with the entry form.

    35. I am so sorry for the techie questions, but I tried to use Flickr to 'host' the image but the link they provide does not seem to include ".jpg" but rather their own reference number. Can I use this on the submission form?

I also tried photobucket but I can't tell how they resized, messed with my original 72dpi etc. so not sure what would end up submitted...?

      Help?

Edit: Also trying Google Picasa, which gave me a weird link but with the .jpg at the end...

    36. So this might be a silly question... but the doll should be in the photo for this contest, yes? Both doll and shadow, unlike the Silhouette contest, which should be just the shadows?

    37. Please open a thread in our Photography Tips to help get specific answers to these sorts of technical questions!

The image is solely of YOUR creation. If you need your doll in the picture, then you need the doll in the picture. ;)

    38. Thanks for answering! I've been so busy with all the other contests I'm just getting back to this one! XD

    39. Oh I'm going to have some fun with this.

    40. This theme reminds me of the Shin Megami Tensei games. Great idea!

    41. Loving this theme even more! :o Definitely going to work my butt off to make a great picture... awesome theme and a prize I've been wanting for forever! X,D
      Good luck everyone! ^^

    42. Went out and took the pics today and now I'm editing. Man I'm rusty at photo manipulation. Thanks for giving me the chance to practice.

    43. I have all the pics I need, now off to editing.

    44. Alright got my entry in, finally done with all the editing. Now off to work on other DoA things!

    45. Editing... but, will entries be disqualified if non-doll objects share equal focus as the dolls in the picture? ^_^;

    46. Entries will only be disqualified if the member is found crossposting that image elsewhere on the web.

    47. Okay, done and submitted.
I'm not sure if I did the whole 72dpi thing right, but the image should be sized to how the rules ask, if I have indeed done this the way I understood.

When you say "crossposting the image elsewhere on the web" I assume that doesn't mean a hosting site for the image where you have made the image private/only viewed by you?

    48. Technical questions CAN be posted here or in the Photography Tips subforum!

Yes, of course we don't mean the image hosting site you're using!

    49. This contest is intriguing... dunno if I'm gonna go for it or not, but I have a question. Can the photo of the doll include an illustration done by ourselves in the background, representing the "Shadow" that is the character's worry/fear/thing that's holding them back? Or would it have to be another doll?

    50. Sounds to me like you have an IDEA and not a QUESTION!!! Go, go!!

    51. This theme is brilliant! It was sooo hard trying to think of what to do for it! But it's all done and submitted at last :) Now off to try some other contests! Good luck everyone!

    52. Good luck everyone, too ! :) Have just submitted my entry :)

    53. Silly question...when you filled out the entry form, under "DoA Username," do you put down your actual username, or a codename? I only ask because I've been filling it out with a codename for the mutli-skill challenge...

    54. You use your DoA Username. As in, what you log in with. :3

    55. Okay, thanks! Just double checking ^^

    56. Good luck everyone! I've submitted my picture and I'm glad it's over so I can concentrate on another contest... XD But this was so much fun to think about that I had to give it a go!

    57. Ok, after not deciding on what to do, and redoing everything 5 times and editing my concept 5 times more, I posted the one I think could get near to what I wanted in the beginning.
      Done.
      Done.
I can't belive I'm done with this one.

    58. Okay just submitted my picture...600px check 72DPI Check...
i thought a lot about it and worked hard ...
Well i hope Photobucked is okay to use :) Now i hope !
Asleep Eidolon Cherry is the second doll i wanted to order so this would be an awesome way to get him much faster xDDD *still saving up* I´m wishing luck to all of you and i´m looking forward for all of these awesome entrys :)

    59. Dang it. I wish I had noticed a few days ago, but I think I may have uploaded the wrong version of the picture I wished to submit and I'm worried about it getting disqualified now.

Well, I guess it's too late now. Good luck everyone!
