Group The house of 5 in spring

Sep 28, 2023

    1. It's spring in my country. My dolls have been wearing their kimono all winter, and as much as I love kimono I've finally gotten tired of seeieng them in it. Time for a change in season and fashion.

I forgot to put shoes on them. But I don't wear shoes when I'm indoors at home anyway, so my dolls don't either.

Halcyon (Dollstown Rhea, above) and Justinian (Dollstown Mui, below) recently got new faceups - painted by me. I've managed to skill up and I'm really pleased with how their faces turned out.

All pics above were taken with my smartphone (Google Pixel 6a).

I've been playing around with my DSLR camera, and I'm finally getting somewhere with it! All pics below are taken with a Nikon D3200 and two lenses (18-55mm and 75-300mm macro). I think I'm the latest convert to the church of the DSLR.

Besides repainting Halcyon and Justinian, I also modded Vallant (Kanadoll Mars) with PVA glue and blushing to give him scars. Unfortunately some of it is rubbing off already so I'll redo it eventually, but most of it is holding up fine.

The anpiel (DV Achelous human) will take care of Vallant.

Pics are on my doll blog if they show up broken. Thanks for looking!

    2. Lovely photos of the couple! Do Anpan and Val count too yet?? Syr looks very happy with Justinian's fresh face!

I think you'll have lots of fun with your DSLR! It's a totally different experience. A wide open lens has no trouble with subject background borders unlike AI detection. If you're having to stand too far back, you can find a set of close up filters for your lens to cut the minimum focal distance down. For some lenses, it's just way too far for dolls! I don't own a DSLR, but if you ever have any questions I can try to answer unless they are DSLR specific.

    3. I love seeing your crew whenever you post them, lovely to see them in new fashions!

I'm also a Google pixel/Nikon DSLR person and find it quite a good mix of devices for doll photos. Sometimes you just want that quick sharp snap via pixel! Sometimes you want the softness of a camera. I think you've worked both very well and they go together nicely, too!

    4. @nyaaain The anpiel and Vallant are definitely not a couple, but they are two of a kind! Lots of platonic affection and fondness between both. Remember, the anpiel is a guardian of birds... Some birds need more guarding than others.
Syr always looks happy in this pose with Justinian. I had them in the same pose earlier this year and I swear she was smiling then.

@cobaltconduct Thank you for your comment - I'm glad you're enjoying my dolls. ^^

And thanks both for the encouragement with the DSLR. I've been taking more pics and they're coming out so nicely. If I can get my camera to manage the different lighting conditions in my home, I might abandon the smartphone completely for indoor photos. I'll still keep using it for outdoor photos -- I don't use doll stands so if I have to dive for a falling BJD, I feel better dropping my smartphone than dropping a full camera. And yes, when making the choice between the doll and the photography device, my reflexes jump only one way. :XD:
