50–65cm Dolls The harpy Ocypete [nudity]

Jan 20, 2024

    1. I love mythological creatures and i wanted to create a Harpy for a long time. So here is Ocypete! Wanted to make her quite lean with a strong upperbody. Still a lot of work todo but i think i'm far enough to get the idea across (hopefully). Think i have a few options how to do the wings but i haven't decided yet...

    2. ohhh very cool! you did a great job giving her batty vibes xD
you have your work cut out for you , she probably needs some serious knee engineering to keep upright and crouching with those heavy wings

    3. Yeah i worry about that as well should i make segmented wings from resin. Although possible to add some bumps or locks to the joints it might make her a lot less fun to pose or interact with. Right now i'm thinking to try and make the wing from fabric first so only the digits are resin.

    4. that could work, i think dollzone had a bat doll with fabric wings (yo-sd size or so?) maybe have grooves for where the fabric would be inserted, then you could even giver her leather wings!

    5. Exactly! Leather or something that has some stretch and some light can shine through it. Only need to figure out a good way to build the parts...

    6. Ohh I love this concept! She looks great, though I agree those knees might be a bit of a challenge. I look forward to seeing progress though!

    7. Thx! Yeah its going to be tricky for sure! For the knee I'm not too worried. Think i can manage standing straight and crouching will be the knee joint folded all the way. That way it sort of locks itself as well I'm actually more puzzled on how to do the ankle since the feet will rotate a lot in a crouching position.. Either way it will probably be lots of printing and testing..

    8. Ah yes, I hadn't even thought of the ankle but you're right! Best of luck with your tests!

    9. I need those arms! <3
That is the coolest doll ever!

    10. Decided to keep the thumb and pointy finger pretty normal (not part of the wing) for more room for posing and interaction. These two fingers will be stringed.

    11. This is cool! Love it. Because her body is normal she can wear clothes because of the way you have constructed the wings.

    12. Thx! Yeah finding an outfit should be doable still. Although her back is quite wide. Big lats (back muscles) to power her wings. But my main reason is, i like it when there is a big compromise to the body when you add something special. Flight shouldnt be free, the rest of the body deformed in some way to support it :)

Anyway the rough part of sculpting is done time to sculpt in the last (finer) details and print her!

    13. Update: fully printed and (with some difficulty still) able to stands on her own!

Tried some full resin wing parts but decided to go for mixed media wings first. Lighter, easier to pose and i think more fun to try :)

    14. Oh, it's great to see her printed. This is such a cool design.

    15. Thanks! Its been a good lesson for me as well. The detail at this smaller size, new knees, jointed fingers and big wings. Quite a (fun) struggle sofar

    16. Love the new hands and arms, I can't wait to see more of this project.<3
Someday I want to make a partly anthro bat boy, and even though I can't sculpt or render things this gives me ideas and hope for that someday project.

    17. Reworked the legs (mostly the knees) and printed in large scale to test all the joints at this scale and so its easier to test adding fabric to her wings.

    18. Oh my goodness, I love harpies, and this is such a lovely creation. I am looking forward to seeing how you develop her further!

    19. Thanks! I'm still working on improving the wings... Its quite a puzzle. So in the meantime i printed another... with normal arms :)

    20. Oh, It's interesting to see how differently the back and shoulder muscles reeds with the human arms.

And those wings do look complicated to get right.
Do you have any plans for casting her at some point, or will you keep her printed only? Asking because I find myself sort of brain fidgeting trying to figure out how you's go about casting something like this.

    21. Yes, exactly what i wanted to see as well! The wide upperbody with normal arms (well a bit bigger and longer to match the upperbody). And i kinda like it, makes everything slightly off (her head/face is also slightly different). Perhaps she is half elf, half orc or something. Either way, it adds to the character i think :) So no i guess i have to make two versions, one with normal ars, one with wings.

On the wings, yeah its the same issue when 3d printing. I made the long "fingers" into seperate parts, that solves it. They have a little point that fits into holes in the arm. With a bit of glue they hold up really well. Normally not a fan of using glue but in this case it really works. Plus its a good start for the next version with real feathers!
I'll probably only resin print her. When cured properly the resione resin is strong and not brittle at all. I think the wings will hold up better.

    22. Hehe, I can relate to that. Typical crafting accident. There we are, innocently experimenting away and trying different things and suddenly we've created a new project without even noticing until it's too late.

    23. Haha yeah happens too often, thats how i also ended up with these two

    25. I am! This sculpt was both amazing and frustrating at the same time. But i learn a lot from it and keep on improving the winged model. Look forward to do the winged one (in large scale) fully in resin one day :)

    26. oops
