Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge One: My Angel!

Aug 2, 2014

    1. So true! I'm so impressed with how well some of those turned out. And by the use of materials as well - there were a few where I was shocked to see what the wings were actually made from!

    2. I did say "basically looked like they'd work.. not so much looked exactly like real feathers"... meaning that this was for those that DID use bird feather type techniques and that I wasnt really looking for "exact" feather shape etc... just something close that gave the appearance of the wings functioning properly if they were real. I also mentioned webbing in my comment. I wasnt restricting it by whether or not people created bird wing type feathers... I just meant that this was one of the criteria I was looking at for those that made wings like this. I did enjoy the demonesque wings and the steam punk ones etc. ^^ I'm glad we werent restricted to "angel"/bird wings! :)

    3. Thanks for the clarification - now I see where you were going with that. The part I mentioned was a direct quote from your post, so I obviously read what the words said, not what you intended. It makes much more sense now. :)

    4. You're welcome :] I hate it when stuff I say comes off different than what I meant so I was happy to clarify. lol. It is hard sometimes to understand what people mean online isnt it?

    5. It is interesting seeing how everyone's criteria differ. As far as I was concerned, anything that looked like real feathers was right out. While a lot of them were beautifully done, I couldn't see voting for them over more exciting, transformative ideas. Same with anything where I knew exactly what it was made of from looking at it. I voted for things where I was impressed by how different the end product looked from the materials.

I'm satisfied with my own entry. I don't think it's going to be a contender, but I'm hoping I can make up for it in the next two, when I should have more time to devote to the projects. I'm also amazed by how many entries there are overall! I guess that FCS is just too tempting, lol. I do hope that when the final results are posted, no one is too upset if they don't get any votes. Competition was fierce! It was really hard narrowing it down to one for each category, especially aesthetics. I couldn't even give myself a vote in good conscience because there were just so many stand outs. I also noted 12 that I thought deserved recognition for various categories, like best traditional wings. Maybe I'll post my honorable mentions once voting is finished. :)

    6. I looked at all the pictures briefly last night, and looked through all the separate, linked pictures with the materials used pictures this morning.

Now I find myself not liking one of the entries I liked last night, because it seems like the person who made them did nothing creative with the materials they used. I went from "ooooh, how did they make that?" to "..... they didn't make that. They just stuck it on the doll's back"

    7. I finally voted, after looking through over and over again! One of the ones I voted for I have no idea how they were made, so hopefully they're as creative as I think they are. And I agree it would be fun to be able to ask questions later.

    8. Wow, I'm amazed there are so many! And I'm not as thrilled with mine as I was, mine really look much better up close, I think. Oh well, I'm still working on the second challenge, and these were really fun to make. I think it's going to take me a few days to go through and figure out my votes!

I also think it would be cool if there was a way to ask questions about the wings and have them answered (anonymously) by the makers. There are so many creative ones!

    9. I'm right with you there. I entered even though I had not even the slightest thought that I'd be in any kind of contention. I'm in it for the "celebrate your most special doll" factor and I have no artistic talent to speak of. Interesting criteria of NOT voting for real-feather-looking entries - and I mean that most sincerely. I wouldn't have thought of it at all, and it will mean that some of the more creative ideas will get a well-deserved boost because of you! (in fact, I noticed a package of rotini in someone's parts picture, and after it's all done I have GOT to know where...how...huh? :) )

    10. I'm happy because the challenges are making me figure out how to take good pictures of my doll in my tiny, cluttered apartment. I haven't had much opportunity to take pictures outside of doll meets because the light is so bad. With flash the dolls are washed out, without it they look kinda spooky and haunted. It's fun trying to figure out how to achieve something that is neither.

    11. wow I can't believe how many entries there are this will take some time to vote. I'll probably continue to play along but I know mine is not nearly as creative and fabulous as some of the others. I should have went with more decorative ideas..ah well

    12. If you have a camera with a separate flash, have you tried bouncing it off a ceiling or wall? If you've just got built in flash, you can do fun things to make the flash a little less harsh, even holding a bit of tissue over the flash will help.

I love ALL THE WINGS. I can't believe there are so many entries, and I'm having a super hard time deciding which ones to vote for.

    13. I will try that when taking pictures for part two!

    14. Great job, guys! I loved looking through everything. There was so much creativity and splendor. I actually found it very easy to pick who to vote for, but I made sure to look at all the materials and details, to verify that a lot of hard work had gone into each one. I guess for me, though, there were a few that just popped out. Although I second the idea of honnorable mentions, because WOW!

    15. Oh man that was both hard to vote for and very daunting looking at so many amazing ones compared to mine!! I can't wait to see the wings with the niche's!!! That's going to be amazing!

    16. Wooooooww, there were some AMAZING WINGS, I've definitely got my work for the next challenges cut out for me. I'm still pretty confident in my wings, but there's definitely some tough competition! I didn't vote for my wings in any of the categories because even if that wasn't a cheap move, I honestly thought the wings I voted for in each category deserved it more than mine would've. Still, I hope others feel differently!

I hope people don't see my comments and think of me as TOO competitive, because I'm totally having a lot of fun with all this, and I really am enjoying seeing everyone else's hard work and their gorgeous creations, and I hope they're all having as much fun as I am. Its just that I REALLY want first prize, and I've always gotten a little... out of control... when it comes to contests, eheh...

Super excited to see what people come up with for challenge 2!

    17. I'd love to see them when you get them working!! It seems like quite the cleaver mechanism!!

    18. WOW! There are beautiful wings and cool ideas in that contest. Lots of them make me new ideas, and there are wings what I want to make. *-* Congratulations!

    19. I just put in my three votes. Oh man, it was HARD to decide! D:

    20. Everyone did a fantastic job! It's so much fun seeing all the creative ideas. I'm really proud of how mine turned out, I just hope people are checking the alternate views because mine were kinda designed to be viewed from the back. I'm working on my niche this morning, but when I'm done and waiting for things to dry I'm gonna go through and look at every single detail shot so I can vote :3

    21. Moderation note!

Please reel some of this chat back in! We do not want people revealing how they voted in-thread. The votes are confidential for a reason, so please refrain from sharing this information until the contest is over!

      Thank you~

    22. I feel suspension of disbelief as important for the artist as it is for the viewer. Very few depictions of angels, demons, etc., through the ages look as though they could fly without otherworldly intervention. ;) Fortunately, whether the wings work or not, are anatomically correct or not, or any of it, wasn't part of the criteria when entering the contest, only something the voter might consider when awarding points. Everyone will see and interpret that differently. Without any accompanying explanation I can't know just how the wings relate to the doll (if at all). But all of the entries do tell me one important thing, that the owners/creators feel they have very special dolls indeed! :D

After last year I was going to sit the contests out, but I wanted to support my friend. :) I certainly don't fantasize about getting a single vote, not even my own, in any category. ;) I still have no idea for the niche and I'm afraid it may turn out worse than my wings.

    23. Although I don't think I'll place in the top 3, will we be able to know somehow if we received any votes at all? I think I would be happy to know that! :)

    24. I do believe that at the end we'll get to see a chart with all the points tallied that is shown using the aliases that people picked, so that people may find out how many points they got, and then share their identity if they wish to.
mods please do correct me if I'm wrong though.

    25. You can only reveal your identity, if you wish to, after the Triathlon is completely over.

    26. oh that's what I meant by at the end. the end of the whole triathlon, not just the end of a challenge.
      sorry if that was unclear ^_^;;

    27. I do believe there is still a list of some kind (whether that be by alias or # entry in the contest) that tallies all the votes. It wont have the real identity of the person who entered mentioned anywhere however. Using an Alias was done to disguise the real identity for a reason, so I do believe this means that it will be used when listing the votes like it was done last year.

    28. Ah. :) They will post the points from round 1 after the close of round 2, if I recall correctly, hence my confusion. ;)

    29. Good to know, thanks everyone~

    30. So many creative, awesome wings!! Very hard vote, I was surprised by some of the stuff used and how people made it look so good after :D

    31. HEEE! Well if it helps, I *know* I didn't get my own vote ;) --- I'm really happy with my wings but there was some stunning stuff in that group and heck, I'm voting for the best :)

I really wish you could award a point for "dang, that may not be the best in x, y, or z category but it GOES with that doll SO PERFECTLY!" I saw at least a dozen I'd nominate for that. They looked like they were SUPPOSED to be part of the doll organically.

      soooo I guess I revealed my un-vote :P

    32. Out of so many entries, I'd be surprised if any 3 singly stand out in number of votes. About five or six of them will tie for each of the top three slots, with single votes scattered all over the others, won't they?

Gorgeous work everyone, but how will this pan out, regarding the numbers? No idea.

    33. There are so many gorgeous and amazing wings. As always I'm blown away by the sheer creativity people have on this forum. It really made voting quite hard!

    34. There's nothing really stopping anyone from voting for whatever reason they like though, is there? I mean, don't the points just all get added together in the end? And the categories are all open to interpretation.

Personally, I just voted for the ones I liked the most :)

    35. Wow, what a surprising variety and quantity of entries! I feel overwhelmed just trying to look at them all. Great job, everyone!

    36. OMG this was sooooo HARD - I had to make this list of favs (which was, you know, half the list) which really didn't help - took me over an hour to finally narrow it down & I STILL wish I could give ties LOL Such a lot of creative talent on display - & 2 more things to go!

    37. I agree! Though as I sit here still trying to decide I really wish there was a 4th category - "overall like" or something XD. There's tons I just really like and while I can't assign them to a particular category I really want to vote for them... just because I like them...

    38. Waaaa! I REALLY loved, enjoyed alottts watching all those wings. Had no time to join the fun making wings (and I'm so painfully slow crafting stuff), but at least I can watch and vote. Looking forward to see what people do in the 2nd challenge. Good luck every one!

    39. Wow, that was a difficult vote. As usual, the talent and creativity in our hobby leaves me breathless. Congrats to everyone who completed the first leg of the triathlon, and may your muse deliver in the next two!

    40. okay... started going through them again.. have 11 so far marked down for possible voting... 19 more to go through O.o... then I have to narrow it down even more. LOL!

    41. Just wanted to say that the entries for this contest were staggering in quantity AND quality! Absolutely great work, everyone! It was tough to decide on only 3 votes. Many many beautiful wings!

I won't have time to keep going with part 2 (work and life has become too busy again) but thanks to these threads I drew up plans for it and will be making it on my own schedule. I wanted to say thanks for getting me going with some exciting first creations for my doll, and to all participants for sharing your inspiring and creative work. I look forward to reading on for the rest of the event and then participating next year, hopefully for all parts of the triathlon!

    42. Having been spoiled by the fabulous entries of past years, I have very high expectations for these contests, and the entries for the first leg of the triathlon did not disappoint!

Had to make some hard choices:sweat, but I have voted!

    43. everyone's wings are awesome. very creative everyone!

    44. I'm in a similar boat as you, though a lot of it is that I'd like to prioritize the other contests too. I also am going to take the initial plans I had for Challenge 2 and create something to use from them :)

    45. Wow! It was almost impossible to vote for only three pair of wings. Everyone did a great job and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the different materials used. So cool! But the thing I enjoyed most of all was the way people interpreted the idea of wings. I wish there were at least 10 categories to vote for and even then I wouldn't be able to include all the wings that I really liked. I love the open criteria of the contest which allowed so much imagination to come out. I can't wait to see the second challenge entries.

    46. Finally voted! This was sooooooooooooooooooooo very difficult. I could easily have nominated six entries for each category. Now I feel a bit sad about those I didn't vote for... In any case, congratulations everyone! All those wings are so wonderful XD...

    47. Voting proved difficult given all the wonderful entries. It was hard to pick just one for each category!

    48. I finally put in my votes, too... I think I needed at least 30 votes, though! (Why can't I just vote for everyone?!)

I really wish I could have voted for so many more, there were a ton in there that absolutely wowed me and it was hard to actually narrow it down (which is why I loaded the list Monday and voted today). No matter how many points anyone gets here, you all did amazing work! :3nodding:

    49. Can't wait to see the results of the voting!

    50. Am I completely daft, or should the voting results of Challenge 1 be announced?

    51. Glad I'm not the only one who can't see them! lol I was thinking I just couldn't find it. XD

    52. Lol me too! I'm clicking around - It's after 6:00pm EDT right? maybe it in a tricky/sneaky spot? lol

    53. Maybe, I'm guessing that or technical difficulties. I'm just on the edge of seat because I want to know how bad I did~

    54. yeah I'm imagining technical difficulties.
I've been scurrying around the kitchen trying to distract myself by making dinner, but that's all sorted now, so I'm back to anxiously checking every place I could think they'd be posted lol

    55. I know that feeling! lol I keep going onto FB, Flickr, Youtube, and anything else I can think of! Ah excitement. o3o

    56. Voting results are going to be delayed until later this evening! We'll be posting the Round 2 entries and voting at midnight, and will probably have the round 1 results at the same time. You'll be the first to know!

    57. o3o I will do the smart thing and work on round three until then! *so excited still*

    58. That is very much the smart thing to do. *shoos all of you away from the thread*
      ;):aheartbea

    59. Going to be hard to concentrate for the next 5 hours or so. :sweat

    60. Thanks for letting us know, St. James! I'm on my break at work right now so can't be crafty but luckily I have a few ideas swimming around for the third round, that should keep me distracted until midnight. XD
