Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge #3: Build a World!

Jul 29, 2013

    1. Challenge #3: Build a World!

      Description

You've got your doll dressed and equipped, time to put it all into action! Build a set using only white paper and embellish it only with black marker. Then create a short animated sequence (in .gif format) of your doll using the prop in the set. You may draw or cut out and assemble whatever setting is appropriate to the action. You may tell a short story with text, you may add special effects, but all of these elements must be incorporated directly into your scene using only your white paper and black marker.

      Your materials are:
      • On-topic doll wearing outfit from Challenge #1
      • Prop from Challenge #2.
      • White paper.
      • Black marker.
      • Tape, glue, scissors or craft blade for cutting paper. The tape must be invisible and cannot be used as a design element. The glue must be clear and cannot be used as a design element. You may use foamboard or cardboard for structural support, but they should not be visible in the final images.
      • An online GIF maker like gifpal or gifmaker, or Photoshop.

      Rules
      1. Minimal use of photo editing, please. You may do basic color correction and cropping so that your frames run together as seamlessly as possible, but all details must be hand crafted within the physical set. Removing wires or doll stands is acceptable.

      2. Your GIF must be a minimum of 10 frames and a maximum of 24 frames.

      3. The set must have been created specifically for this contest. The set must fill the entire background of each .gif frame, but you do not need to show the doll full length in every frame if your prop is very small.

      4. No posting entries or others photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after judging is closed. No posting your .gif on the site where you created it; download it to save it and upload it to your own photo hosting site. Describing your in-process or finished set or posting pictures used in the final .gif before the end of the contest and judging (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.

      Who May Enter?
This contest is open to all members who do not currently have any unresolved transactions or other disciplinary measures in place. Members must have joined the forum before June 25th, 2013.

The contest is also open to all forum staff, though staff may not participate for prizes. If you have won a doll or part of a doll in a past DoA contest, you may enter for fun but you may not participate for prizes.

      Specifications

You may submit one GIF only.

GIF must be 450 pixels on the longest side (orientation does not matter).
Oversized images or images sent in the wrong format will be disqualified.

Entries are due on or before August 27, 2013, at 11:59:59 Eastern Daylight Time. For those of you who are unaware, the US is on Daylight Savings time. Entries received after this time will be disregarded; if you do not know what time this is where you are, use this link.

Entries will be submitted directly to the moderators using a form that will become available in a few days.
Do not PM the moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

If you are not interested in the top prize, please indicate this on your entry form. Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it; it is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests.

      Entry Form

      Entries are now closed!

      Voting

      VOTING IS NOW OPEN!

Entries will be posted for member voting from August 29th-August 31st. Votes will be submitted and tallied privately using a new feature in the forum software. The totals will be made available on completion of voting.

Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification.

      Points and Prizes

This is the final task in the quest for the Sadol Yena, listed in the first post. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for the prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all sections.

Members will choose the best entries in three not-yet decided categories - so there will be three ways to earn points! Focus on making a great moment and you'll be on your way to earning points no matter what categories are chosen!

    2. Goldy Modlies... the time link is for 2011 :) You guys must be exhausted with everything you are organizing for these events and we LOVE you for it!!

    3. Thank goodness for a whole 7 days to build a world....if you believe certain tales it's been done before ;)

Irreverence and kidding aside, I'm seriously thrilled it wasn't due the 25th as I'd feared!! We got this!!
It IS going to be a fun challenge!

    4. 8D We're on the same page as everyone else for sleep deprivation! XDDDD I've fixed the clock link, thanks whitewings!

    5. ...well, I'm out. No idea how I'd even begin to do this.

    6. ^u^ Where there's a will, there's a way! If you have any technical questions that the staff might be able to help out with, please post here or drop us a line in Ask the Mods. You've come so far, just try!

    7. Dear me this is going to be difficult. I just had to make my prop what it is -_-

May we only use the one doll or may we incorporate another interacting with them?

    8. Give the gif maker links a read at least before you decide, maybe?
It isn't as hard as it sounds to dip your toe in and learn to do this on a basic hobby level...jus' sayin'. :sweat

    9. Oh my poor brain is sizzled out but I do love this idea. I look forward to brain storming for this thing when I have enough braincells awake to rub together.

    10. Only the one doll may be used in your .gif.

    11. You're not alone.
I read all the instructions...I've never done anything like this before...time to do some quick learning...:aeyepop:

      We CAN do this!

    12. That's the spirit!!! XD See what I mean by fun?! XDDD Hahaha I've spent a bit of time in animation, so that's why this is my favorite trial~

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! YOU'RE ALMOST AT THE FINISH LINE!

    13. As long as it's edited out of the final product, can we use wire or fishing line as a support?

    14. Don't give up yet! I had no idea how to make a .gif before last week when I set out to make sure this wasn't too hard of a challenge. Try experimenting with some photos you already have so you can get an idea of how it works and decide how complex you want to make your .gif. It could be something as simple as a subtle portrait of a doll who is just shifting around in her seat or as complex as an entire fantasy tale told in 24 frames. Even something very simple can have loads of charm. Remember that you'll have three categories in which to earn votes, so charm will definitely earn points even if you don't have the best technique!

    15. Yes! ^____^

    16. "...you may add special effects, but all of these elements must be incorporated directly into your scene using only your white paper and black marker."

Does this mean gif maker/program special effects? I'm a little hazy on it since it says 'using only the paper/marker' but then yes to 'special effects'. Could you please clarify this part a little more about what's allowed/not regarding FX? Examples of allowed/not allowed effects maybe?

      Thank you!

    17. I think special effects means like...if you want to animate sparkles or explosions or the doll suddenly growing wings or something you can do that, but it's gotta be animated using the marker and paper?

    18. Like, for example, if you doll's prop was a magic wand and you wanted an exploding ball of electricity to shoot out of it for two frames, you'd have to cut that out of paper and stick it to the wand while you took those to photos. Or if you wanted the sky to go dark in the background, you'd have to color it in gradually with your black marker as you took your photos. Does that help? :)

      You got it, Antorell! :D

    19. I....I.....*dies* Congrats mods, this is a very, very, very excellent challenge. I think I will end up using all 24 frames too with the idea I have. GUH. I so can't wait for this, but it is going to be hellish to get done!

    20. Well me and my partner is fighting over this hehehe,,,,, what I understand is.. we need yo create a setting in 3D... like making furnitures out of paper with a little help from supports like cardboard and wires .... what my partner understood...is everything will be 2D .. simply drawing on the background with some sketching and drawings from the marker ..no props out of the white paper

Sent from my GT-N8013 using Tapatalk 2

    21. Oh good lord... x_x'

So does this mean that we can also build set pieces as long as it's white paper and black marker? Or can we only make background items if they'll be used? At first I was excited for my prop... now I am kicking myself royally. lol

Edit: Oops posted after the question was just asked. Like a royal derp. New question however! If we, maybe by small chance, perhaps "lost" the foot coverings from challenge one because they're ugly as sin and magically jumped into the trash... Will the rest of the outfit do? I maybe, might have, thrown away the foot covers because... I cannot find them. (I hate my outfit with a burning passion.)

    22. Oh my gosh this sounds like SO MUCH FUN!!! Seriously regretting not being able to wedge in doing the triathlon this year.

    23. You are both right. You can build a 3D set with drawn on details, or you can draw the whole thing on a white background. You can do a combination of each, if that works for you.

You can build as much or as little as you feel you need or can allocate time for. There are no limits to the amount of paper you use, the size of the set, or the amount of drawn elements. The only thing you probably shouldn't do is have a plain flat white background, because this competition is fierce! ;)

    24. Yep, it does, no post production splodeys, sparkles or glow trails...it's an inky paper world! I'm curious about the 2D/3D question as well, though...I'm glad I wasn't the only one wondering.
      *edit* answered!

    25. I think we need a play along thread - with no deadline - in the crafting subforum, for those of us with no time right now, don't you?

    26. XDDDD I would like that, because I desperately wanted to play in this 8^8..

    27. Ooooh, that sounds like a lovely idea. ^_^

    28. Well good news is, I found the lost bits of outfit while removing all the trash from the last challenge off of my table. (I'm a messy worker. D: ) And knowing I can make as much or as little as I want... Well I'm off to Wal-Mart! I don't work until 2 tomorrow right and who really needs sleep???

    29. XD Well, at least the staff will have good company while sorting entries ~

    30. I'm stoked to see what everyone made and jealous that you guys already get to see! Gah so many fun ideas for this contest though! I think I'm more excited for this one now than I was the last one since I realize my prop could be epically fun in the long run.

    31. Great googly-moogly! Time to bust out the sketchbook and get planning.... I've got a basic idea, but this is going to take some developmental planning for sure.

Hang tough everyone - we can do this!

    32. That would be fantastic. I've had a really busy month so I knew I wouldn't be able to do the triathlon, but the challenges have been wonderfully creative and I'd love to play later in the year. (Plus, seeing even more interpretations from other people would be great)

    33. AaAAaAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!
      Just sayin'.

    34. I cannot WAIT to see the entries for this. O__O This is going to be magnificent! Awesome idea mods!

    35. While I was crafting my item, I was sorta thinking that this would be the last challenge, so I was actually thinking up a story while finishing up. Now to get starting on the actual world. :) Good luck!

    36. So. Uhm. For those of us new to the GIF world, does anybody have a good site that collects examples of the form? I mean *good* examples. Like, not people sticking their tongues out and such, but people actually trying to tell stories this way? I've wasted the better part of my morning searching, and so far, everything is pretty bad.

    37. Thank you for the encouragement, folks, but nothing that requires me to draw has any chance.

It's a brilliant idea though, and I'm sure cool things will be done with it. =)

    38. I know what you mean--
I had this thought during the second leg: how each of these challenges was tailor-made to be a favorite of mine, and I KNEW that the third was going to be the one thing I can't do: draw.

But I've always wanted to draw, and am making all of my dolls to do storytelling just like this (sans markers), so I'm not giving up. Bad drawers of the world, unite! Do not concede the field!

(I may talk big, but really, I feel queasy inside. Why oh why drawing?)

    39. X_X damnnn this is gonna be so hard...... but still 8D a fun challange~~

I have a question can we use those rolls of paper i think there called butchers block paper uhh the ones that attach to kids art boards if there white only?

    40. I would think there are things you can do with this that aren't heavily drawing-based? Like if you build objects out of paper, which isn't such a different activity from challenge 2, or there are probably some interesting things a person could do with the animation just with written text on their paper. Or like...think of how you can combine lots of basic geometric shapes to make more complicated objects; you could cut out a lot of simple shapes and do some cool slightly-abstracted flat stop-motion with those.

    41. Oh I have lots of non-drawing ideas....they just take a lot more work/time than drawing.

Question: Is paper mache still allowed? White paper plus glue?

    42. well...yeah... I looked at the description again, and it doesn't say we have to make a backdrop, which I had assumed. So maybe there might be a way, even for those of us who can't draw so much as a circle *waves to her fellow art-challenged types*.

    43. ^^ please try. Think of it more as colouring if you wish. You could do this challenge entirely in pure solid black and whites :D there's definitely room for everyone in this challenge, and its all about applying yourself in strange or new ways!

    44. Laelen, any verdict on the papier mache?

    45. Do any of the frames have to show the doll full length? For example, can I do the whole thing only showing my doll with the prop from the waist up?

    46. Im going to have to wait for St. James to weigh in on these ones, guys :)

    47. Amazing challenge! <3 I'm soooo excited for this one! I knew it would likely have something to do with making a backdrop, but the .gif element of making it a story is outstanding. And finally something I'm good at...drawing! :) I also love that we can "draw" our own special effects...omg this is going to be so fun!

I do have a question, though. In the rules it says You may tell a short story with text, you may add special effects, but all of these elements must be incorporated directly into your scene using only your white paper and black marker.

So does this mean if we want text in our story, we have to hand-write it with a marker on white paper and have it be part of the photograph we take? Thanks!

One more question! Can there be any sound in our animation? Either sound effects or music?

And one last question! (Promise!) Is there a limit to the delay between the images? Or can it be as long as we want to convey the story properly?

Thank you so much...I'm really excited about this contest! <3

Now to learn now to make a .gif...I'm hoping it's basically like making a stop-motion animation.

    48. Yay! So much excitement! :D And some trepidation, but that a good motivator too. :)

Yes to butcher paper, some of you might need the broad expanses!
No on the paper mâché, as this is more about manipulating your images to create the illusion of a dimensional world than it is about actual construction like Challenge #2.

Try to get your entire prop into at least one frame, for those of you with big props that will mean that you'll probably be showing your doll full length. If you are not sure how to get it into the frame, think about using some creative camera angles that allow foreshortening to add some drama. I don't want to spell it out too much, but basically we need to see that you did something with the background and we want to see the elements from the previous challenges showcased.

All text must be written using the paper and marker and shot in scene. No sound for your contest entry version, but that doesn't mean you can't save a second version with sound to share later. :)

There are no frame rate requirements, nor does every frame have to be different. Since you can't alter the frame rate halfway through the .gif, you can create a long pause by simply using several identical frames in a row.

I don't have any examples, but I'll see if I can find some later today. You are better off drawing inspiration from comics or stop-motion animation. Search Vimeo.com for "paper animation" to see some great examples, some of which are only five seconds long.

    49. When you say "black marker" I picture a big chunky thing. Can we use a fine line marker or combination of markers with different widths?

    50. Wow, I have no idea if I can even do this. If I do bow out it will be amazing to see what people do!

    51. Any size is fine and any number of sizes, it just has to be black. :)

    52. If we use white foam core, will we need to cover that with paper, or can we work directly onto the surface of it, since it's already white?

    53. I need to brainstorm. I can give this project my full attention the rest of today and tomorrow but then it's school again, and I refuse to drop out of the competition!

    54. You may work directly on your foam core.

    55. Would it be OK to take the photos in color but then convert them to black & white? so it would look like an old movie?

    56. Can my doll be wearing store bought shoes for this?

    57. What about a manipulation of light sources and silhouettes. Also black cut outs? (or just white paper colored black?)

    58. St. James replied earlier "...this is more about manipulating your images to create the illusion of a dimensional world than it is about actual construction like Challenge #2."

Am I understanding correctly, the purpose of the foam core is to help stage the dolls and props and is not to be used to create new props?

Instead of paper, can the foam core be used instead to create decorations for the background or is the foam too three dimensional?

Thank you for the guidance. (Sorry for my dunderhead questions.)

P.S. St. James: Thanks for the Vimeo.com link, it offers lots of food for thought!

    59. Yes! :)

      Yes! :nods

You may use shadows and cutouts, but all black should be created by marker rather than an absence of a background behind the cutout.

No problem! No building other objects out of foam core, but use may layer foam core on the background to add dimension.

For those of you who are intimidated and thinking of dropping out, don't feel like you have to tell a huge story. There are many wonderful and simple things you can do with a gif!

    60. I was playing with making a simple gif with both programs that were linked and was having trouble making a 450 X 450 pixel square gif. It seems to want to make a rectangle, which of course either loses me space or crops my images. This occurred even when I started with sized 450 X 450 images. :(
