Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge #1: Retread Threads

Jul 28, 2013

    1. Fain -- OH NO, you too? I couldn't stop to focus that far last night. I was wondering, would it go against the contest to have a thread for the people with the "almost" projects. I want to see all of the work that was done toward the contest, for one. And I sure know the disappointment of missing the bewitching hour when the entry link disappears. Thank you for the exception you made for me, to let me show it here. I don't think I could have ever wound down last night if I didn't have someplace to take it on line for public viewing. [I made a pot of strong coffee yesterday morning, which meant at 4 I was still charged].

Thank you kizzie -- me too, wanna see --

    2. I'm looking forward to seeing all the entries too, ones that made it by deadline or not. I think a thread for playing along entries would be great to see. I told myself I'd finish the triathlon even if I was late with one part or for some reason disqualified, the prizes are amazing but it's the participation that's the thing. This and the USA Dollism news have really drawn me back to DoA and out of lurk mode.

Eden, your story with Kun had me laughing, obviously I'm biased though. ;) It was great to see your project, you did a really good job.

Sakuraharu, I also hope your doggie is ok! I'd like to see your project, if you feel like sharing, because your techniques links and Pinterest you linked have been so interesting!

    3. sakuraharu: So sorry to hear about your doggie had to visit the vet. I hope s/he is fine.

All: Very sorry to those who missed the deadline. :( But I hope everyone will continue and others will join in to do the Triathlon. It's amazing to see the results of so much creativity!

Have the entries been posted? Where, please? Thanks.

    4. Link for viewing/voting hasn't been posted yet. Maybe this means there are a LOT of entries to go through. =)

    5. angelynx-prime: Thank you for your reply! *nodding* I'll bet you're right--these events do so much to stimulate the creative juices!

    6. Entries have not yet been posted for voting. All of the images have to be hosted on the DoA server to maintain anonymity so it will take a little while for armeleia to process them all.

    7. St. James: Thank you for the update!

    8. was hoping just for funnies, you wouldn't mind if I shared now,,,
the , :sumomo:BEFORE LANDING IN BJD OZ,:sumomo:{The old movie version of "The Wizard of Oz" reference... that was in black and white until Dorothy landed in munchkin land? Do kids still see that one these days?} Here is the Good Will clerk guy from my earlier photo.
Seriously, this was his real face when I started telling him I wanted to take his picture and WHAT////??? HYSTERICAL. And if I could figure out how to post / that is where to post I'd put out the whole story. What I thought was especially funny was how my Kun looks like she is empathizing with him, or mirroring him. ^^
      BEFORE: [IMG]
AFTER: [IMG]HHe looked a little more sane in the first one I posted of him, way, way wAAAY back, yesterday. Or maybe it was just me.

    9. Since you are doing Triathlon as a project that shows progress shots and notes along the way, maybe a Triathlon Project thread in this section would work for you and others? I'm wondering myself if it's ok to post mine as a project journal after its all done, since I'm keeping a log, photos and notes...

    10. Will happily wait for the go-ahead (*salutes armeleia for her hard work*) --I'm sure it will be so much fun to see them all. Thanks St.James!

DaughterofEden, your pix are a blast! I love GW guy's manically happy expression even more now that I see how nonplussed he looked before.

      mimimontoya, I like that idea.

    11. Although I missed the deadline (my dog is fine, but on pain killers. She has bad arthritis and it flared up, but we were worried she had broken something as she was in a lot of pain), here are a couple of pics.

First, my entry that didn't make it. Sadly I didn't have time to make an underskirt, or shoes so I photographed her in the petticoats and outer gown only:

As you can see, my model chose not to stand. It was 10 minutes to midnight at this point, so I decided a chair was in order...

I used regular gathers to make the petticoat, which made for a thick waistband with two layers of net and one of lining fabric. So I tried cartridge pleating to gather the fullness on the outer skirt (about 3/4 yard of heavy satin). It worked well but the instructions said to gather with two rows first before making the pleats. This was a mistake. I now know it's totally unnecessary for doll scale clothes (and it snagged the fabric.) Live and learn! Luckily, the skirt is long enough that I can cut off the old pleating and do it over. :)

I am going to remove the netting and use a higher quality tulle for the petticoat, and add proper lace and trim to the outfit in general.

Here is a proof-of-concept I did back in early summer while we were first planning the triathlon. I used a polyester georgette shirt as the fabric source, and I made the hat from a gift bag made of some type of woven natural fiber. If anyone wants the pattern for the crocheted purse, let me know!

    12. ooh I love the direction you were going in.... its beautiful :) Can't wait to see it all finished when you have a chance to...

    13. Gah, I can't wait to see what everyone came up with! I bet the entries are going to be abnosome!

    14. It's such fun at this stage, when you've got one eye on the second phase in progress and one on the results from the first phase, and everyone's all excited and buzzing with energy. I just love the Triathlon. =)=)

    15. I hope the voting period is going to be extended...

    16. So excited to see all the entries! <3 Can't wait until the voting is ready. It must be lots of work getting all those pics posted.

    17. ^^ things are taking a bit longer than expected. Don't worry guys, we will rejig the times so that everyone has a proper and fair time for voting if need be.

    18. sakuraharu -- you are a real seamstress. I can't wait to finally get focused on it and learn about this stuff. I've always had such admiration for people who can do this. My mind is a fountain of unending ideas but I don't know how to turn them into crisp, clean, beautiful {or soft flowing, not always crisp ^^} realities. That little hat is cool too. Some of what you describe is a foreign language to me, but I'm looking toward learning to speak it, and LIVE it.

I'm also just checking in to see entries...:abambi:

    19. Thanks, Laelen! that was my only worry. :)

    20. Kudos to St. James and Laelen for working so hard on this and all of the anniversary events! As an FYI, there is a ridiculous amount of work involved in sorting the entries into a voting form.

    21. sakuraharu: Both of your dolly dresses are beautiful. I was especially attracted to your flapper dress. Is that a rolled hem you did on it?

May I also extend my thanks to St. James and Laelen and to all the mods working on DoA's Ninth Anniversary events. Without all of you mods being there, there would be no DoA for us to look to for inspiration and excitement.

    22. No, it's just folded over twice. I haven't mastered the rolled hem foot on my machine, or by hand, either!

    23. The entries are now up and voting is open! :D

    24. Yesss, voting time! :)
And there are so many nice entries.

      Nice work everyone!

    25. Make sure you follow the voting directions!! You may not vote for the same entry three times! We will already be tossing a few votes due to failure to read the instructions.

    26. Wow, voting was really hard! I wish I could have voted for more then 3 in a way. Or like entries that I thought was impressive, since there was so many really nice outfits! I love how creative people in this hobby can be.

    27. Oh my oh my oh my. GREAT JOB everyone. I will have to think hard about this...especially with those categories! I have a top three, but they don't line up with the stated categories. Hmm.

    28. Voting was very hard. All the entrants did a wonderful job. :)

    29. Voting was very tough. Good luck everyone! :)

    30. I agree that everyone did such an amazing job with the outfits! I was really impressed by all of them. Voting was super hard.

    31. Yes, the field was wonderful. I haven't voted yet - narrowing my favourites down to 3 is going to be really hard. My compliments to everyone who entered!

    32. Gah, I finally managed to narrow down the entries to three for voting - it was so hard! There were so many amazing outfits!
Voting always makes me feel a bit 'meh' about entering these contests, cause as soon as I see the field I'm never happy with my own entry >.<

    33. I agree. I feel like I don't have a chance anymore.

    34. There were more entries than I thought there would be and I'm glad. It was VERY hard to vote, but it was lots of fun seeing the original outfits and the transformations. Some great eyes and marvelous talent here on DoA! Good luck on parts 2 and 3 everyone!!

    35. Don't say that! Remember that the winner of the triathlon is based on total points earned, NOT on who wins each round (in fact, there really is no winner for each round). So it is entirely possible to win the whole thing even if your first entry doesn't do so well.

I will agree though that the level of talent in our group is humbling!

    36. ^u^ sakuraharu is absolutely correct, don't despair! There is always an astounding level of talent coming out of the works, especially in such wonderful contests. The best part for me is being constantly wowed by all the work that people do for this craziness! XD but there's still 2 rounds to go, so keep at it everyone!

    37. I love looking at the wide variety of creations people came up with. There were a lot of extraordinary entries, particularly if you look at the base garments and see just how much some people transformed the originals. Definitely look at the "before" pictures! The comparison really emphasizes the amount of work people put into these incredible outfits.

    38. I have been in some of the other triathlon's in the past and I entered knowing the level of talent that has been in previous years and I know I can't match it. That doesn't stop me though! Although I have been improving every year, and I think doing them can really make me think about things and push myself more. So even if you don't think you are going to win, keep going I think it is well worth it. Plus the way I am looking at it I am thinking about making things that I am going to keep afterwards so at the end of it my dolls will have some nice things out of it.

    39. I agree with everyone, the level of talent and imagination in this group is amazing! It's taken me an hour just to narrow it down to FOUR per category and I'm nowhere near to deciding my vote. Just looking at the "before" pix and then the results is jaw-dropping. Everyone deserves applause!

I'd also like to say: please don't be discouraged! When I look at my entry for the 2011 contest (I didn't even have a sewing machine then!) next to my current one I can definitely take pride in my progress since then. If there's another Tri in 2015 (I hope!) I feel sure I'll be better still, and so will others who keep working and learning. And in the meantime we can all enjoy being in such a remarkable group of creators!

    40. Oh yes, everyone should be proud any way! I was the same a couple of years ago my entry wasn't as good but that was the first time I had made a dress and I still like it. It was simple and I know I could do better now, but at the time it was good for me, even though it didn't stand a chance. :)

Also like you I hope I get better for next year and just keep improving. :)

    41. Absolutely stunning entries! Everyone who entered is a winner in my book!:D Just look at what you accomplished with a simple thrift store find...spectacular! Voting was so difficult...everyone deserves a Bravo!!! Applause, applause!:)

    42. Finally voted, INCREDIBLY tough choice, major compliments to everyone! can't wait to see how the voting turns out~

    43. Same here! It was hard to choose just three, but I finally picked my favorites. Wonderful work, everybody! I really enjoyed looking through all the entries. :) I look forward to seeing the results, and the next round of work!

    44. Lurking to see voting totals. Creeper? Maybe...

    45. Ha ha! no, not creeper. I just finished my work on challenge #2 for tonight...er...this morning. So I popped over here to see if maybe....

But I know it's going to be more work for the mods to assemble all the totals and pics and anonymous names and whatnot. Thanks guys, for all you do for this contest!

    46. Second those thanks. I can't imagine how much craziness is involved in running this event, posting entries and collecting votes on part 1 while answering two million questions on part 2 AND managing the other contests that are going on outside the Triathlon, AND the usual mod duties... these people just rock. :)

    47. Well I thoroughly missed out on the voting this year (real life intrudes) but I just checked out the entries. Some of them (most of them!) are absolutely stunning. I can't get over the creativity and sewing skill! Bravo everyone!

    48. Just curious about the voting totals~ ^_^
