Contest The Great Triathlon Challenge #1: Retread Threads

Jul 28, 2013

1. I took a photo of everything that wasn't visible in the garment-with-doll photos, I actually had fun documenting the deconstruction process and learned a couple of things about stabilizing flimsy fabric without adding stiffness.

2. I have a clarification question about the embroidery stitch rule. If we are using, say, a basic straight stitch, can we use this stitch to create designs on the fabric in lieu of a decorative stitch? For example, maybe a faux-quilting effect with straight stitch?

Sooo excited about this contest! <3

3. This is all excellent advice! It leaves no doubt as to the source of thread, trim, notions, etc.

You can use a straight or simple zig zag stitch in whatever ways you can think of. Quilting/sashiko, outlilning applique, etc.

Hopefully we will be able to share these tips after the end of the contest. I'm checking on how to set up the project journals we had last time.

4. I have a quick question, I am not sure which doll I am going to use for the outfit yet. It is choice of two. Does it have to be the doll you end up modelling the outfit on, or is it OK as long as they are the same size. I own all MSD's any way. Just I know I need to get the photo of the item before I start taking apart with the doll.

Or could I just pose both dolls with the item?

5. I think taking two photos-- one with each doll-- is the best way to go here.

6. That makes so much more sense. Thank you! :D

7. Purchased my garment today. Am ripping out seams as I type! (Okay, not really.) I haven't sewed since high school, so this is going to be both challenging and fun.

8. I'm kind of cursing my lack of funds right now. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with.

Would it be okay if I use one of my previous thrift store finds to play along since i have no interest in the prizes at all?

9. whitewings: It sounds like your garment has lots of trimmings having lots of potential for you to be creative. :)

I thought of better documenting my garment in mid-deconstruction as well. My garment is primarily one colored and the 'before' pictures of the garment may not be clear enough to show that the outer layer is partially see-through so it was made with a light weight and same colored lining sewn with/into the waistband and zipper. I took additional pictures to try and capture that detail, but it was only after partial deconstructrion when I thought to do so. I hope the additional pics will show all the fabric is from that one item.:kitty2

10. I might have a go at this! I actually work at a thrift store. haha!

11. You know what, I hadn't thought of that, but you are quite right. I took tonnes of time carefully unpicking everything so I could get as much thread out of the garment as possible, so I should definitely take a photo of the whole garment unpicked with all the components so the mods can see what I got out of it. Thanks for the idea!

In other news...I had to buy a new unpick/seamripper >.< Because I may have kinda broken my old one taking this garment apart XD Over the last few days there have been many MANY hours of Supernatural re-runs sitting on the couch with an unpick haha.

12. I managed to ruin mine so I have to go to the thrift tomorrow to pick out something new. ._.

13. The entry form is now available! Look for the big blue CLICK HERE in the first post. :)

14. There isn't a much as one would think from my post but more of a jumble of thoughts LOL.... I have one nice trim that's a PAIN to unpick... OMG I hope it is worth the effort!!! I've really enjoyed what I have done so far, taking notes and photographing each step has been kinda fun :) I can't wait to be wowed by other entries like I am every year!

15. I just spent most all of the day unpicking my outfit. Now to figure out what I'm actually going to make. I keep changing my mind! LOL

16. I keep changing my mind too, good luck in figuring out what is best for you!

17. Yep, you are welcome to enter and play along with everyone else! Just make sure to tick the 'NO' button for the "Do you want the prize?" question.

18. I just have a quick note - it says that entries are due on the 14th August EDT, but when I click the "use this link" button to find out what time that is in my country, it's giving me dates and times for 2011! I assume it's an old link or something, but I just wanted to check it is definitely the 14th Aug EDT that entries are due? XD

19. Whoops! Yes, entries are due by Aug 14th. Fixed the link! :sweat

20. Just a word of warning--when ironing your garment that is made of unknown materials, test each component as to how hot the fabric(s), trim(s), etc. will tolerate.
One part of my garment is cotton, but when I used the same hot iron on the trim, it melted. :doh

21. Loving the entries that are starting to come in! Just a reminder: save your garment leftovers!

22. Ack!!! I'm so sorry this happened! Your advice is very good. I'd also suggest using a press cloth-- even something as simple as a piece of cotton fabric-- if you are not sure what your fabric is made of or whether it will show ironing marks.

23. sakuraharu: Thanks. But I should have known better--my oops set me back since I had to re-do it but I'm marching onward. ;)

24. I was reading the thread an stumbled across the embroidery warning... is hand embroidery still alright (I only used the thread I chose for this project)?!? I spend tons of time doing little bows along hem and I would really hate to have to pick it out :...( I also hand-sewed some button holes, are those alright too??

25. I am actually worried about how much of this we will need, because the item I got was rather small and I don't have very much left at all! I am hoping what ever is planned I will have enough.

26. Hand embroidery is perfectly fine! Presumably, most of us have equal access to hands.

As long as you have something left, you're okay! :)

27. Thanks, that is really good to know. I do have something left but not very much at all! I wish I would have picked something bigger in a way! Oh well, I am liking my outfit so far. I think it looks cute on my doll. :)

28. *phew* Thanks St. James I was really worried!!

29. I am all done with my entry, I am just sorting out the photo's now. I am on my 3rd footwear design though, because I screwed up my first 2 designs! So I had to Mac Gyver something together in the end as I was getting less and less fabric to work with!

30. I have something to do this afternoon, but will finally get to work on my outfit tonight and now I have an idea that I am sticking with, it should not take long to finish up. :)

31. Trade places with me? LOL I foresee another 11th hour submission from me..... I'm well over half way but tomorrow is Monday here and with that comes tradesmen and dust.... lots and lots of dust :|

32. Lol, if you entry is better then mine the cool, sure OK! :p *giggle* I hope you can get it done soon, I really hope all your hard work shows! Keep going and just think you doll will also get something awesome looking at the end!

33. I have finished my outfit and taken pictures. Now all I have to do is upload them and send them in. :)

34. LMAO - I'm trying I really am!! I am only sitting down now to get some headway with my outfit.... its 9:30 pm, I'd say fingers crossed but I have two bandaged up from an incident today involving a new sink and some box cutters XD

35. Oh dear! Well from the sounds of it your entry really is blood, sweat and tears! I am happy to hear you have some headway though at least you still have a few more days!

36. Oh, ouch!! Definitely blood, sweat and tears went into your entry. Hope you heal fast.

37. Looking forward to seeing all of the entries! I spent a lot of time on mine this weekend, and will be burning the midnight oil tonight and the next.

38. whoot whooot~~ just finished mine X3 after working on it constantly the past few days! -flops on chair-

Goodluck to all still charging on with it~<3 keep sewing on!!!!!!!! :D

39. Quick question:
If you make removable parts of the clothing, so you can make two outfits out of one, is that considered one or two outfits? It'd be made from the same garment and everything.

I had to wait until I got paid to buy the clothing I'm using, which was Friday, so I got a late start. I'm still planning on finishing my outfit though and turning it in on time!

40. If your doll can wear it all at once it is one outfit. :)

41. Thank you!

42. Yay to everyone who finished and rock on to the rest of us! I'm sure my entry will be right down to the wire.:doh

43. Bravo to those who have finished!!! I made some headway last night but fell asleep at the table.... teeheee how to you wash drool off an unfinished garment? (joking!!)

44. [IMG]

:D Hi everyone! Just dropping in for the big reveal!!! SADOL has released photos of our grand prize girl, a limited one-off release LOVE60 Yena Fullset! She includes :

-One Off Yena head
- Love 60 body
- heel leg parts
- Glass eyes
- Wig
- Dress set
- Shoes

Check out the full set here!

45. I have a question concerning the $20 limit. So there are tons of thrift stores where I live and most of them have half of days, could i buy say a $30 item at half off for only $15. The receipt would show the sale. Also there are some thrift stores that mark up all their stuff way high but always have half off their clothes, always. So the tag would say '$24 50% off you pay only $12!' This is not really a sale it is the way they always price all of their stuff. Would either of these be ok or does it have to originally be $20 and under?

46. I'm fighting my less-than-stellar construction skills to get everything put together on time.

Just to confirm that I'm not failing calendar comprehension, is the midnight deadline when Wednesday, Aug 14 turns into Thursday, August 15, or when Tuesday, Aug 13 turns into Wednesday, August 14? (Sorry to ask such a derp question but I've gotten burned on midnight deadlines in the past.)

47. Oooh! So beautiful! SADOL has been very generous to us.

$20 refers to the final price before any sales tax, etc., so if you are lucky enough to get a more expensive item at half off, that's great. Just make sure it is marked on the tag or receipt.

No fail-- midnight is a little confusing. To clarify, it is due at the very end of Wednesday August 14, eastern daylight time. I've modified the first post to show that the east coast of the US is currently on Daylight time, not Standard time.

Note that the first post also links to a nifty countdown clock specific to this challenge. Thanks, St. James!

48. :doh Of all the times for my sewing machine to have a spaz....top tension is all out of whack. So perhaps I'll just hand-sew the rest tomorrow night while watching ST:V re-runs. Because I so do not have the time to mess around with the sewing machine :P Rather silly of me to do this as well as GISHWHES!

49. I've gotten a late start to this (just started last night!) but my outfit is almost done! Now... I have to battle a swollen eye to complete the footwear, which is giving me a lot of trouble. D:

50. WAH! I just discovered this! Bummer! Really wanted to try one of these triathlons. WAH!!!!!

Good luck to everyone!

51. ^^ Vindalootoo, you can still enter the other rounds for fun if you like :D ! There's plenty of time~ You probably won't be eligible for a prize since this round is almost over [ :( ] !! But the 2nd and 3rd rounds will be an absolute blast ;) Please join in the fun!

52. The fullset Yena is so beautiful! I love her outfit. Guess I'd better get back to work so I at least have a chance~

53. Oh, Yena is so gorgeous in her outfit. :)

54. I'm reeeeealy late getting on board. I just read the detail about the tag. I went out today and purchased something. But my thrift shop is low end. They don't tag items. Don't usually give receipts.

•A closeup of the garment tag still attached to the clothing with the sales receipt dated later than August 1st. To keep things fair for all contestants the garment must be purchased specifically for this contest.

I asked the lady to write out the receipt for me. And today was BAG day as it turned out. All you can put into a brown grocery bag for $6.
Will a written receipt for that be OK?? *~* I asked her to write on it that it is for a doll clothing making contest. Not sure how strict that requirement is, to the letter of the law? I saw one answer was to take a picture of yourself buying it with your cell phone. I don't have a cell phone. I didn't read that anyway, until just now. [I could have taken my regular camera, but missed this detail].

EDIT: what I make will be very simple. I just want to participate and this is a good way to get me going.

55. *Bounces a spool of thread and some kittens in to cheer everyone on*--
tiny break time for a few minutes for me, then back at it! Everyone not finished still working? Yay!

56. A written receipt will work. :)

57. sakuraharu -- thank you. I started thinking about it, and ran out AGAIN, to the expensive :) thrift store: GoodWill.

I favor the really funky ones like my earlier spree, but started thinking "what if everybody"... that it might defeat the reason for the proof. And, er, um ~ ANY excuse to visit a thrift store will do. If there were a contest for finding the coolest stuff with possibilities for deconstruction/reconstruction I would be a serious contender!!

edit: I took my Kun Volks with me. She was standing right next to my front door with her shoes on. And those PLEEEZssszzee eyes. Finding goodies with possibilities is our favorite thing. She stole the show at the GoodWill. Especially at check out time when I made a photo shoot of it. ^^

58. I was happy to see the response to Vindalootoo -- talk about last minute. This won't give away any details about my entry, if I can finish something this fast, but I thought it might cheer everyone on. I had a great shopping trip with my Volks Kun...we had a little photo shoot at the check out. Very helpful cashier, as you can see.

:)

I'll understand if the photo gets deleted. It might be out of bounds somehow? There is no give-away about potential gown entry?

He was having fun with the whole thing too. And my Kun girl, what a shopper! Worse than me.

I've got the finding possible retread threads part down pat. And not too shabby on the DEconstruction phase. har, har ~~ opps, I hope this isn't considered describing my process??:?
I just thought it would be a little chuckle for a break for everyone who has been working hard.

59. No, as long as you don't describe the actual outfit you are making or the clothes you took apart, all is good. :)

60. All done! Yay! MUCH sooner than expected. Now all I need is decent photo-taking weather tomorrow and I'll have my entry in unheard-of hours ahead of deadline. :) Can't wait to see everyone's work!

(DaughterofEden, your pic is great! =)
