Aesthetics The Eyebrow Dilemma - Second try :)

May 15, 2016

    1. Hello to all,

I hope it's ok posting this here, but I couldn't find a better place to do so ^^

I'm a face-up artist and as such I practice on my own heads by trying out new things that could help me improve (besides commission works). Lately I've been practicing a lot on eyebrows since they are my weak spot and there is a style I've always admired and I wanted to achieve. Yesterday I tried it and I got a stunning result, I'm really proud about it and would love to offer this eyebrow style also for my clients if they like it. The thing is, that this kind of eyebrow style is very similar to the one of a well known artist. Of course I was inspired by her and other artists that do the same style eyebrows, but I did not "copy" them by for example looking at a pic and the reproduce it on my doll. Also the rest of the face-up is done on my own style. Do you think it is ok for me to have the same eyebrow style like another artist? Would people think that I'm copying the other artist? I've practiced a lot and tried many different styles and this particular one is the one I like the most and also suits the rest of my face-ups...what is you honest opinion?

I ask this because I've seen people accusing a quite famous face-up artist of copying the style of another rather famous one (not just one part, but the hole face-up style). There people answered that it's not copying at all, but rather the two artists having the same face-up style. Is it possible for me to have the same eyebrow style of another artist without being accused if copying her?

      Thanks for your help <3

    2. i think that by using that inspiration to continue on your own, it will develop into your own eyebrow style. i'm hesitant to answer this by saying that it would be totally okay, because it is an art, but it's also just eyebrows... i mean, personally, i'd test the waters with it and if anyone says anything to you about it it's just something that you can learn from.

if you don't feel comfortable with offering it as a commissioned style, though, that might be a red flag for you? if it's something you're really unsure about, then even offering it as an option might be a bad idea for you. you could experiment on your own with a practice head until you feel less like it'd be an issue.

    3. I think its fine, personally! I'd love to see it hehe

    4. I see no trouble with this. It's not like faceups are a trademarked feature. Anyone can do them and use any method to do them. Things like eyebrows, blush, and lips, done in a particular style, can't be claimed as someone's own property or right. Unless you started doing faceups in a particular artist's style and then claimed to be that artist, that would probably be the only time it would be a problem.

    5. I think it's definitely possible to be inspired by other artists without copying them. If your eyebrows look exactly like this other artist's eyebrows, or appear to be obviously copied from them, you might run into some problems. But I mean, you like what you like, and if some elements of faceups that you love end up in your own faceups, they will probably be in your style even if they're similar. If you feel nervous about it though, that is kind of bad just for your own sake. Like you don't want to have any doubt in your mind about your own stuff, regardless of what anyone else says, that's just going to lead to stress and you should be having fun. Perhaps for your own peace of mind, you should contact the artist and just tell them what you think! Say that they are a huge inspiration to you, but you're afraid that you subconsciously made your own eyebrow style similar to theirs, and ask if it bothers them. Most faceup artists I've talked to are pretty chill, so it will probably be fine. :D

For me personally, I have no problem admitting that when I first got really serious about faceups I practically pored over Poppy's and Docshul's faceups. To me it's obvious that I was inspired by them, but still, my faceups don't look like theirs. And no one has ever said anything bad about it! Over time I think my style evolved into something unique, even though in the beginning some elements were probably pretty similar.

    6. Classical artists have long been trained by working under a master or making copies of the work of a master. In this case, I'm glad you say you took inspiration from the other artist's style but didn't follow a photograph when making your own...or going so far as to reflect an image over the face you are working on. Instead, good luck in figuring out how to best evolve this new & exciting technique into your own style!

    7. Thank you all so much for your opinion! I've been practicing on another head and I really got to like this style! It's fun to paint the eyebrows like this and I love the result, it's the one that I can do the best so far! Like Cthulhu said, I will use the inspiration to evolve and make them in my own way, they still look to much like the other artists one >__<

Here is a pic of my first try for those curious :)

    8. you've done a wonderful job. it will be nice to see more work from you for sure. those eyelashes especially are beautiful!

    9. Thank you! The eyelashes are my own technique which I developed to get faster at doing them and I'm happy they turned out good because I will stick to them for now XD

    10. Beautiful job!

    11. I have been dying for more people to do eyebrows like this! I have seen a few with this style and I think that they look wonderful and they fit with your aesthetic.

    12. Wow, those are incredibly well done. That's actually really similar to the look I want to try and achieve with my faceups! I'd be really curious to know what artist you were inspired by, because I'd love to see more examples of this style!

I think that it's okay to start out using other's styles as inspiration. You're not trying to copy them exactly; you just like the look, and want something similar. You said yourself you're not using a photo reference while you paint. You will inevitably change it and add your own personal touches and whatnot over time, anyway c:

So while I know I want something similar, I wouldn't copy it because it's not exactly what I want :P And I'm practising doing faceups because I want to get exactly what I want lol.

    13. I really don't think that you need to be concerned with what you are doing. No matter how you approach your face-ups somebody could accuse you of copying. Being accused doesn't automatically make it true. You could end up trying to intentionally develop a very individual style and find out that there is someone else out there who is coincidentally painting dolls almost exactly like you do. Does it mean you two copied each other? No.
The more people are out there doing one particular thing the more likely there is to be overlap.
I advise you to maintain a strong sense of integrity and to be respectful of other artists like you are now. But don't be afraid to explore different styles and work in modes that you find inspiring. When you start intentionally replicating very unique face-ups so that they are intended to be confused with the original and when you intentionally copy very personal work (other doll's tattoos and signature markings) then you are being disrespectful to other artists and the dolls' owners.
But generally speaking, the experimentation and research you are doing is vital for learning and improving any artistic skill. I hope you continue to make beautiful work and eventually find the direction that you are looking for. (Or continue to be diverse, truly there's nothing wrong with that!)

    14. Eyebrows sometimes look like that actually. Though I find its mostly on the outside parts, my friend has some crazy brows l0l.
On the middle most parts its more like the mainstream style.

It looks cool, stick with it! It seems mostly like its going to be a trend.

    15. this is totally true, to be honest. i've seen it happen to plenty of artists in the tumblr community. the truth of the matter is that artists are always, whether subconsciously or consciously, inspired by other artists within the same media. you see people with art that looks at least vaguely like another artist all of the time, especially with trend styles (like how the adventure time style got really big for a while there, though that's more extreme because people did blatantly copy that rather than making it into something else).

incorporating someone else's style into your own isn't a bad thing, it's a part of growing as an artist. there's a difference between true plagiarism and honing your skills through studying another style, especially if that style works for you (i once read a comment that someone made about how if a style feels right for you, maybe there's a part of it that was already in you -- and you're finding it through someone else). i should've said that to begin with but other people have said it too. anyway, your work is beautiful, and it will be nice to see more from you and where you go with it.

    16. That faceup is totally adorable !

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with drawing inspiration from other people. As long as you aren't blatantly copying them, it's just a matter of finding someone who sparks your creativity and influences your style. Art is all about influences. There isn't an artist out there that wasn't moved or inspired by someone else to help them create their visions.

And to be fair, relatively normal looking eyebrows come in very limited shapes and styles. To really be creative with eyebrows, you'd have to go outside of the norm.

    17. I thank you all for your precious comments, they have helped me a lot to figure out how to manage this new style. Since I'm at the beginning of it, I've decided not to offer it yet in commissions. I will practice on my own heads for now until I developp a more personal style that I feel comfortable with :)

For those curious to know who the inspiration artist are: Viridian House & Pearls of Danube <3

And here is my second try:

The face-up for this head is my personal contribute to Pink Dolly Day in Barcellona hold the 4th of June and since it's a special event, I thought to try and make a more special face-up :3

    18. That's so cute! They look like little feathers (probably because of the stronger line in the center), which might be a unique direction to continue to take them if you're trying to make them more "yours". (I mean, the artists you mentioned have kinda feathery eyebrows, but I really like how yours look just like feathers while still looking natural as eyebrows! If that makes sense :))

    19. They do look like feathers... I LOVE that. It looks so nice!

    20. Oh my god, they are so well done and look so unique! I love them. They look dainty and delicate, but big and expressive at the same time :D I hope that I can be anywhere near as good at eyebrows (and faceups in general lol) as you.

    21. I was about to say something similar, I totally agree with Tohrulchi, someone's style is not a property. Every artist get inspired by other artists, even when they become the inspiration of "younger" artists. It's the best way to improve and find your own and unique style. Although in face-ups and make up the differences between styles can be subtle. So I'd say go ahead, there's nothing wrong with your work, in fact, I really really like it!

    22. I don't think it's "copying". I look at it this way, you could be a surrealist painter and still put a clock into a painting of yours without copying a Salvador Dali!

    23. This looks wonderful, I love this style of eyebrow! And the eyelashes are wonderful too. :)

    24. The combined vertical lines of the eyebrows, eyelashes and lips are amazing. I've never seen anything like it!

    25. This is only inspiration so you arn't breaking the low ;) there is a lot of eyebrows that look so similar, evryone that is complaining about it don't anderstand the low. Eyeborws are eyebrows ther isn't to much posibilities of making tham .
It is like saying to other people ,, why are you coping my eyebrow style '' XD

    26. Absolutely agree. There is no trouble until you do not copy artists style and told everyone that it is your own)

    27. I think the eyebrows look great! I love the way you do your faceups: everything is so wispy and ethereal. I must say that your eyelashes look SO GOOD. Like sooooo good. Just like what everyone says, eyebrows are eyebrows and many people do faceups the same way/style. I don't think people would shame you for taking inspiration from another artist because not only is that how we learn new techniques, but inspiration is inspiration and you're not necessarily creating the same time.

    28. Your face up is totally adorable !

    29. I think these are just darling! I love the style. I also think, as an artist, but one who hasn't yet attempted a faceup, that you can be inspired by work of others, but unless you try to copy a piece line for line, you're always going to add your own style into the work. Art is always about being inspired by what you see, the thing is, to let your own interpretation shine through. I think inspiration and copying are two very different things.

    30. Your lines are so incredibly clean! Do you use derwent pencils?

    31. Thanks again for your encouraging comments! I'm keeping working on the eyebrows and I really hope to improve :3

Thank you! No I paint them with acrylics ^w^
