Contest The Awesome Wig Elaboration Competition! ~ WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Jul 28, 2013

    1. The Awesome Wig Elaboration Competition!

      Description

Most of us have a wig stash. A BIG wig stash. And some of those are wigs no doll has ever accepted, or that didn't look as good as the company picture, or that had hidden flaws. Well, here's your chance to find a use for them!

Think of RuPaul meets LadyGaga meets Marie Antoinette meets Fantasy/Anime meets Cirque De Soleil --

      Important Dates

Deadline for entries: Tuesday, August 20, 12:00am EDT (midnight)

If you're unsure of your local time, please check the helpful COUNTDOWN CLOCK.

      Voting period: August 24-28th

      Winner announced: Sunday, September 1st

      Who May Enter?

This contest is open to all members who are in good standing who joined on or before June 30th, 2013. Staff members may enter for fun, but will not compete for the prize.

      Rules

      1. You may use any type of material to embellish, support or construct your vision. Your creation can be built up over an internal "skeleton", be wired, stiffened, embellished, tied up, etc., but your entry must contain at least one complete intact doll wig. Take a photo of the original wigs before starting the project.

      2. Go fantastical or historical, but the final creation should not look like some kind of helmet, hat, or other completely non-"organic" structure.

      3. The final creation must be "balanced" once on the doll's head, i.e., the doll should be able to stand with it on and not fall over due to extremely unbalanced weight or projections, or overall weight. If you use a waist-cinch or saddle stand for your doll, the doll's head and body should be able to stay upright without tilting in any direction. (No gluing doll torso sections or head into place!)

      4. You may submit only one wig design. You must submit one photo of the original doll wigs used in the project, and up to three views of the final creation from different angles.

      5. Entries will be not be included in the voting if they do not meet the submission guidelines: Photos must be in the correct format and size. There should be no personally identifying information on the photos - no name, username, email, or watermark. When voting is open, your wig images will be shown anonymously. Describing your in-process or finished wig or posting pictures before the end of the contest and judging (whether in this thread, elsewhere on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.

      6. Wigs must be modeled on on-topic dolls.

      How to Enter

Photos must be sent in JPEG format (.jpg), 650 pixels max on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in other formats will be disqualified. Minimal use of photo editing, please!

You will be asked to describe your wig design as follows: What materials did you use? How did you construct your creation? What was your concept?

    2. *sniff* nobody wants to go wig crazy?

    3. This is awesome!! But which wig to chooses 0_o

    4. I can't wait to get home and dig through my wig stash! This will be awesome!

    5. Well, I'm going to be doing this! For fun, of course.

    6. Yay there is a two day break between submissions.... phew..... I think I sold all my "useless" wigs... but I'll start scrounging anyway :D

    7. I want to go wig crazy! I just... don't know if I have the necessary skillset to do this without destroying a wig. orz I'll see what I can do!

    8. Oh, I am SO in on this! Oh the gravity-defying visions that are just flying through my brain right now! :D

    9. Hi,
I do certain love the crazy contests you have!
Do we have to use fibre wigs or can we use fur wigs?
Im currently renovating a house so hopefully can do something for the contest too...

    10. sounds fun

    11. OMG! I'm so doing this! But one question - I get that at least one wig has to be intact (so no permanent damage like cutting) but can we use temporary dye on that one?

    12. When you say "Intact", does that mean no cutting? Cause I would take "intact" to mean you can't take the wefts off the wig cap and put them on a new structure.

    13. I looked at the time crunch in my personal life and realize that this is just too far beyond me to pull off because this week is way too jam packed. Also, my only remaining BJD is far too identifiable...I might as well just paste my name across every photo!:) I just wouldn't feel right about that. But you can bet I'll be watching this competition closely and voting big time! Can't wait to see what you all come up with. This is a very exciting competition.:D

    14. Yes, you can use fur wigs. The caveat would be that with a fur wig (as with a fiber wig), some of it would have to be visible as well. It would be too easy to use a fur wig just to get a handy solid base and covering it/obliterating it completely. If you do that, then another wig would have to be the counted intact wig.

Dyeing or painting would be fine. Trimming or cutting some of it to shape it would be fine too. But see above about fur wigs. If you're using a wig for just the base, and no part of it will show, then that's not your "intact" wig. You can also take wefts off additional wigs, of course (at last, something to do with those wigs that never quite sit right--).

You're a stronger person than I. Once I get a wig in a favorite color, it never leaves, even if it looks awful on everyone!

    15. Awesome! I have just the wig I have been wanting to mess with.

    16. Oh excellent! Thank you. I have a vision starting to take form, and there are bound to be a few places where trimming will be required. But MOST of the design is going to be executed in the wig fibers. With a few embellishments. ;) Mhuahahahahahahaaaaaaa!

    17. Will you want a picture of the doll standing with it on? That would make 1) Original wigs, 2)Doll standing with it on and 3-5)Various angles of the finished wig.

    18. This sounds like so much fun! Does the original wig need to be store bought, or can it be a wig we have made ourselves?

    19. Oh wow this sounds like a ton of fun!

    20. You can see the entry form in the first post (just close the window instead of clicking submit and nothing will happen), you'll need one shot of your original wig(s) and three photos of the completed wig. One of those three should show your doll from at least the waist up. :)

    21. I have a question about requirement #3, if the doll you choose to reconfigure a wig for is unbalanced by design and can't really stand or sit without the head and torso tilting can you still use that doll/wig in this competition? The doll I have in mind is one of those designed with the ability to stand, even with a stand not really possible(a great sitter but more often than not the head and torso don't sit straight).

    22. If we have a wig we'd like to use, but we no longer own a doll that fits the wig may we borrow a doll model from a local friend even if the doll is not our own? Thanks. :)

    23. If it's a wig you made yourself, it has to have been a complete wig, i.e., it was used and could be used alone, not just as an add-on, or something that would have needed add-ons.

As long as your friend is also a member in good standing as well, and you give her/him credit for allowing use of the doll.

But see, we wouldn't be able to tell for sure in a photo where the tilting was coming from, if it was your doll or the creation on top of it. There are ways to increase stability of any doll, just by making sure your string tension is good, and youve done basic normal maintenance like sueding joints. Any doll should be able to at least stand upright with use of a doll stand.

    24. hobbywhelmed, Thank you so much for the help! That clears up my questions. :)
I'm very excited for this challenge, and I have a great idea for my wig. Wig making has quickly become a past-time I thoroughly enjoy. ♥

    25. I don't have time for this one, in addition to the other contest I want to enter, but I'm quite excited to see what others design, and I promise to vote! :) Good luck!

    26. Can do! Thanks.

    27. A helpful countdown clock has been added to the first post :D

    28. Is it ok to chat about this contest here?

I'm really excited about this event, and have been steadily working on my wig. ♥ I'll probably be up working late on this every day until Monday. :D

    29. Gah, I only just found this challenge, but I think I might give it a shot anyway haha. I've got the second triathlon challenge to work on too, but with the idea I've got I think I will be able to just work on it in front of the TV tomorrow night haha. Glad I didn't end up selling the wig I have which never fitted my dolls right!

    30. Of course it's fine to chat here XD! Please just be careful and do not give away any details about your entry ~ <3

    31. Cool, ok! No worries, I'm keeping my plan under wraps. :X
I'll probably have to keep working all day to try and finish, but I hope it comes out nicely. <3

Can't wait to see all of the entries!!

    32. I am kinda laughing right now - the wig I decided on for this challenge was one I bought for a doll and it just never suited her. Never fitted her either. Didn't fit my friends doll either. Turns out the colour really suits the doll I'm modelling it on!! Hopefully I'll be able to salvage it after I've got the finished shots of it haha - doesn't quite fit her, but suits her well enough that I will try and make it fit XD

    33. Such a great idea, I'd love to give this challenge a go, but as usually I'm too late to the game.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to your designs! ^___^

    34. MissCarrion, that sounds like a good idea! I'm sure you can find a way to make it fit a little better. :D

I also went ahead and filled out the survey in your signature. Hope that's alright! It was very interesting~

    35. The best wig I have for this contest is in a size that doesn't fit any of my dolls....Can I still use it for this contest, and have part of my mods be to make it fit a size smaller head?

    36. Sure thing!

    37. I've submitted my entry this morning. Can't wait to see all the entries! :D

Hopefully this was acceptable, but for the "original wig" photo I combined a photo of the wig on the doll and by itself. The photo was in the correct .jpg format, and fit within the pixel limits of 650 pixels on the longest side.

    38. ^^ thats fine, momo ~

    39. Excellent, thank you Laelen!

    40. Phew! I did it! I was unsure if I'd manage in time (I'm so busy with life atm) but I did. I just hope my entry will be accepted and I didn't make a mistake somewhere along the line. I could only get one picture from the waist up cause I totally forgot that's a requirement and my camera literally died on my while taking these pictures, I just hope it's good enough.

Me too! I'm so excited! :dance

    41. I'm hoping I submitted everything correctly too. I read through the rules probably 10 times, and several times while I was submitting my entry.
      *crosses fingers*

    42. I seriously can't wait to see everyone's creations!!! :D

    43. I am excited to see what everyone does with this challenge too!

    44. I have a question regarding the submitted photos - can we submit photos that have two images side by side (ie, one half is a profile view, the other half a back view)?

I only ask as I need to really show off a profile and back view, as well as a 3/4 front, but that puts me over the 4 image limit because we also have to submit a photo of the doll from the 'waist-up'. :/

Or, could the 'waist-up' photo be more like a portrait or bust-style photo (from the top of the chest up)?

Thanks in advance! This was a really fun contest!

    45. Yay! Just got my entry in haha. I'm really rather pleased with how it turned out, and I so can't wait to see what everyone else did for this - I have a feeling there are going to be some really, really awesome wigs floating around now!

    46. Whoa I'm sorry that I didn't get to this in time, Elzaim, but your current entry is fine, so please don't worry.

    47. No problem Laelen! I'm just happy that my submission is ok. :)

I can't wait to see all the entries!

    48. This wig contest is difficult... The entries look really good!

    49. Wow! All of the entries look great!!

    50. What a fantastic contest! I just love seeing customized wigs, and the entries are ALL just AWESOME!!! Congrats to you all! :thumbup

    51. there is a entry #14 that isn't showing or on the list of options, I'm assuming this may have been just an error or were there suppose to be 14?

    52. There is no entry #14. Sorry for the confusion!

    53. Voting is now closed. The winner will be announced on August 31st!
