Tattoo! (Please critique!)

Aug 21, 2013

    1. This is the first tattoo I've ever done on a doll :) The tiny lines were a lot of fun!

I think that it seems grainy, though (probably because I used watercolor pencil), and I was wondering if there is anything I can do to the watercolor to make it smooth out a bit?
It has been sealed (it only started to bother me after taking close ups of it...). Any advice would be great :D

Besides the graininess, what do you think? Any advice for doing more realistic tattoos would be really nice, because I hope to do a bunch more in the future.

    2. The design and colour looks great.

Would it be possible to get a closeup of the tattoo itself? The photo is beautiful, but not great for critiquing technique ^_^

      (Nice freckles btw)

    3. Thanks!
      Is this better?

    4. I think it looks really good.

The uneven line quality looks like an older tattoo, where some of the pigmentation is lost or blurs in the skin. The imperfections make it work really well.

      Great job : )

    5. Oh, thanks! That's what I was going for :)

    6. I love it! It looks like a blue ink henna in a beautifully intricate design. The freckles are adorable. :aheartbea:D

    7. Thank you!

    8. It's very pretty. Like ancient woding. You could try wetting the pencil to get a smoother line. Or, after you've drawn it, take a small damp paint brush over the lines. You'll probably end up having to clean around the edges, though. I'd love to see any more you do. :)

    9. It's very well done :)

    10. Thanks! I did do it with a slightly wet pencil, but the tips on mine tend to break if they get damp...and I also found out when I was doing it that I couldn't clean the smudges! Apparently the pencil stains really badly...I don't intend to change it, though, so I'm not bothered. I probably need better pencils :sweat

    11. Ah, well that sucks. Sounds like they have good pigment if they won't come off  Oh, I hope I didn't imply it needed changed. It's perfect how it is. :)

    12. That's not how it sounded at all, thanks!

    13. Lovely work on the tattoo :)

    14. I like this tattoo. Good work! :thumbup

    15. Thank you everyone!

    16. Wowwww I love it! The detail and color is so beautifullll

    17. It looks really great! If you still want to clean up the edges a bit, at most craft stores, you can find these tiny q-tip like brushes, that come in pack of 20 or so, for miniature model painting, they're very helpful for little bits of clean up!

    18. Kaiserin, those sound great, I'll have to look for some.

    19. it looks nice ^^ magical

    20. Awwww. lovely!

    21. To make the tattoo look even older you should soften the tattoo a bit it seems a little grainy in my opinion but I really like the placement and design and color never seen a tattoo like that on the ankle :)

    22. Good job on the tattoo! I like it:)

    23. I think it looks perfect!!! I wouldn't change a thing.

    24. I was looking for some info on what to use to do a tattoo and I found this. I think the tattoo is great. Those Celtic interlocking designs are really hard. I'm impressed. I also like that it doesn't look like a 'fresh’ one, it makes it more realistic.
Is watercolor pencil what most people use for tattooing?

    25. That looks really realistic! It's even and neat, and the color blue you chose reminds me of old woad tattoos.

    26. Thank you everyone!

Lilsgirl; you can use acrylic, too, but I chose watercolor pencil because the tattoo was so detailed, and I have trouble getting crisp, even lines with a brush.

    27. Love it! Even though the lines are thin they are very detailed. If you wanted a fresh tattoo look i would try using a medium that would bend rather then flake on the skin, if you were going for an aged look it is very well done c :

    28. I agree with the others, I think the "grainy" look is very realistic. You did such a fantastic job! I can't fathom doing that tiny work, with such even lines... amazing. :fangirl:

    29. Thank you everyone!

    30. Blowing my mind how you managed to get such detail on an interlocking design! I can't stop staring at it!

    31. its really good, looks like a henna :)

    32. This is a very finely worked design that couples both intricacy and a sort of fresh simplicity at once. The blue color has a certain timelessness about it as well, which works well with how you "aged" the tattoo. I commend you on a job well done!

    33. Awesome job on your ankle tattoo. I have a woven tattoo on my wrist that is about 22yrs old..there are a lot of spots on it that have that same uneven quality as yours. (Except not the pretty blue!) I really like that it doesn't look like it is brand new. :D

    34. Lovely job, definitely looks like a healed and aged tattoo (Not freshly inked, maybe a year or two down the road) Great job with the line work, your spacing looks incredibly even. I'm very impressed.

    35. Thanks so much everyone! The spacing is only even because I used a stamp...I inked it and stamped it on a piece of paper, and then transfered it to her skin like you would with a human temporary tattoo. This makes really faint lines, though, so you have to trace over it once it's on the resin.

    36. Ooo! Genius idea! Very well done, I would have never thought of that. Kudos to you indeed, you ingenious person, you!

    37. Thanks :sweat

I would suggest (if you can) using a watercolor pencil and some tracing paper if you use this method, and only barely moistening the transfer.

    38. Duly noted

    39. that's quite good :)
