Playing around with Sculptris. I'm definitely liking it better than zBrush for actual sculpting, although it lacks the booleans that are so useful for BJD sculpting specifically.

And here's a pic after I brought her into zBrush, to use another feature Sculptris doesn't have: Morph targets. Sigh. I really wish Pixologic would merge the two programs' functionality.

    2. I wish I could play around like this!!

how will you do the body?

    3. Sculptris is free to download and (relatively) easy to learn. And the actual sculpting is just practice & observation & banging your head against the wall of "argh why doesn't it look right" until it starts to look right. ;P

I'll probably work from the body I've already made for Kitpandi... which I made by starting in Maya to kind of block things in, and then merging & refining shapes in zBrush. I don't recommend that if you don't already know Maya, though. Something simpler & free, like Wings3D or maybe Blender, could probably work. Or even just working with Sculptris and/or zBrush... I just like being able to define an actual pivot point for when I test joint rotation.

    4. I actually have already downloaded Sculptris and this is why I know how much work it is to learn that...

    5. Yeah... I guess when I said "relatively easy to learn" I meant "relative to a program like Maya," not "relative to using real clay." :/

    6. Aaand I couldn't resist the lure of zBrush's morph targets. It's just so handy to be able to make a change and then slide back and forth between the two versions. But now she's all polgon-y, and I can't seem to smooth her out... may have to go back to Sculptris for that. :P

    7. there is something about the dome of the forehead that bothers me a little. Might just be the lighting though? The face is adorable :D
