Taking pics of other people's dolls? Difficult/easy?

Jul 16, 2005

    1. Erm, wasn't sure where to put this, because it does relate to photography but isn't actually... erm, yeah. xD;; Move around as you wish, mods!

I was taking pics of my sister's Kaido and when I looked at them I was thinking, 'these look okay' but wasn't really getting a 'feeling' from them. I showed them to my sister and most of them she just abhorred. xD;; She gave me advice on where to take pics from and I said, 'but jeez, he looks nothing like he should like that! Are you really sure?'

      Needless to say, I find it difficult to take pics of other people's dolls - because I don't own them I can't say what makes him or her 'alive', resulting in rather crappy, doll-like pics. Especially with a doll that has such a set personality I just don't feel right posing them in any way I wish, yet when my sister made him pose like he should I was just going, 'erm... really, really sure?'. xD;

What do you all think - for those of you that took pics of a friend's doll? =D Find it easy? Difficult? Or am I just being silly for thinking their personalities should come bouncing at you from pics? Opinions appreciated! <3

    2. generally, it helps if the owner of the doll does the posing, and you take the pictures... I feel that owners generally know how to pose their doll appropriately and show the dolls personality best... :)

But actually I love taking pictures of other people's dolls... after they setup:)

    3. The two not-mine dolls that I'm most attuned to are Kami (Kamui's little brother) and Jaede... and they both have the ability to radiate glowing beauty from any angle. *_* I've had good luck taking pics of them in the past. For most other dolls, I agree with evildolly in that the owner should pose them. Mother (or father) knows best and all that.

    4. So true!

    5. Oh, whoops, didn't mean to sound like a control-freak (even though I am). xD; It's just that I do find it hard to get the right... impression from them when I take the pic, instead of the owner. I'm incredibly envious of people who can get the right sort of feeling on camera even though the doll isn't theirs (*cough*Lyn*cough*).

Between brackets though, my sis can't take photos to save her life.

      ...uh-oh. *dodges the wayward hand*

      xD J/k.

    6. I think the other person has to know the doll's personalities, or have a strong feeling about them. ^_^

Otherwise, I think it helps to pose your own doll.

    7. I take a lil time to bound with other people's dolls. When we are at meetings I take a lil time 'till I feel them alive.....
Most of time I take only a few minutes but I may take hours...
I'm just afraid of getting a feeling of the doll that is not the feeling they have.... and hurt the owner/doll's feelings 'cause of it!

Wow! How many "feelings" around my last phrase!

    8. Hee, I've no experience for this, so i'm just going to give some 'fresh' opinions.. heh..

One thing you can do, as many others have mentioned, is to let the owners pose their own dolls first. But it may be tough even if you're the one taking photos.. because there are bound to be some angles where the dolls will look different from what the owners want to see. XD

Secondly, is to get to know the dolls well. They have their personalities given to them from their owners, so try to see them as how their owners see them and then take photos.

Ah, and lastly, the best thing, is to take 'neutral' photos. Take beauty shots. :D These may not require the doll to show his/her true personality as you just want to take them in their prettiest. <3

    9. Well for me, I'd taken some practive pictures of my mom's dolls. While they are not a detailed as the ones here. It helps determine what are some good camera angles. When I go to a meet in August I hope to get several good pictures of everyone's dolls. Should be fun.

I do agree, that having somewhat of an idea of the dolls personality really does help determine what will make a good picture.
