Contest Tailoring: A Multitude of Muslins ~ WINNER ANNOUNCED-- update!

Jul 28, 2013

    1. Sewing and Tailoring Competition

      Description:

Pattern, color and texture can hide a multitude of errors. But what happens when the fabric is plain and simple? Design and construction have a chance to shine.

      Rules:

In this contest you will be using a piece of bleached or unbleached muslin to execute your formal-wear vision. The fabric may not be altered in any way, except with scissors and needle and thread. That means no dyes, pigments or any other treatments that would change the color or texture of the fabric! Your job is to make a gown, tuxedo or other formal garment out of a limited amount of this fabric. You may use a matching color of thread to sew and embellish your garment, but any other trim, lining, etc., must be made from your supply of muslin. No interfacing, boning, elastic or other notions may be used in the creation of this garment!

(Note that fabric terminology differs by country. Muslin is a white or off white even-weave cotton fabric used for creating the clothing prototypes known as muslins or toiles. It is a lightweight fabric, but not as see-through as cotton lawn nor as tightly woven as cotton sheeting. It is most similar to the lightweight calico used by quilters. Plain white or light beige cotton calico may be substituted if needed.)

As notions are not permitted, you may sew your doll into the outfit or make closure from the muslin fabric. Garments must be hand or machine sewn. Embroidery machines may not be used-- any embellishment must be done with standard machine stitches (zig zag or straight stitch) or by hand using the matching sewing thread described above. And as this is a sewing and tailoring contest, obviously glues and adhesives are not allowed!

To keep things fair, the amount of fabric available to you will depend on the size of your model:

1/3 size doll or larger: 2/3 yard (.6 meter)
      1/4 size doll: 1/2 yard (.46 meter)
      1/6 size doll: 1/3 yard (.3 meter)
      1/12 size: 1/6 yard (.15 meter)

As the width of fabric bolts varies, be sure to choose muslin that measures 1 meter (39 inches) or less in width.
If fabric of this width is not available, you may need to cut your yardage to this width.

      Who May Enter?

This contest is open to all members who are in good standing who joined on or before June 30th, 2013. Members who have won past DoA tailoring contests are not eligible for the prize. DoA staff may enter but are not eligible for prizes.
Describing your in-process or finished garments or posting pictures before the end of the contest and judging (whether on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.

      Submission:

You may submit up to three views of your doll wearing the garment you have created. You must also submit one photo of all of the cut out pattern pieces laid back into the original piece of muslin to form a complete piece of fabric. (Your choice on whether to take this photo before or after sewing.)

Photos must be sent in JPEG format (.jpg), 650 pixels max on the longest side, and must not bear watermarks, titles or any other information that would point to ownership.

    2. How exciting!! I will give this a try. :)

    3. I'm very excited about this, too, and so envious! Shiva is one of my dream dollies.

    4. Hmm... not sure if I should try this when I've already ruined my project for the triathlon...

    5. Oh... dear... lord.....

So pointers from anyone in multiple events on how to not sleep for the next 13 days? (on another note... SQUEEEE, so much fun!!!)

    6. Sleep? Who needs sleep? ;)

    7. Regarding the competitions: will there be new ones until the end of the year? I'd like to do my best for each but simultaneous ones are more difficult ( which given the prizes is understandable ) but I'd hate to miss some I'm interested in if there will only be a few more.
Sleep is for the weak, right....right?*_*

    8. Can we use machine attachments that function with the straight stitch? For example, a shirring foot or a pleating attachment?

    9. There will be nine contests plus the Triathlon (unless we pull out another surprise ;) ) and they will all be over by the end of the month. Sleep vs. awesome free doll! Who will win?

    10. This would be quite a challenge to put the cut out pieces laid back into original piece of muslin after sewing up lol [QUOTESubmission:
You may submit up to three views of your doll wearing the garment you have created. You must also submit one photo of all of the cut out pattern pieces laid back into the original piece of muslin to form a complete piece of fabric. ][/QUOTE]

    11. The pattern pieces are either the cloth or the paper pieces. So you'd lay them out over the scraps remaining. If you do so before sewing, you'd use either the paper or cloth pieces. If you do so after sewing, you'd use the paper pieces. Does that make sense? :)

Yes, you can use any foot usable with straight stitch or simple zig zag. As most of these feet have been around since at least the 1920s, they are standard technology.

    12. If we want to make mock-ups to test our design/fit of the garment does the fabric for that need to come from the allotment of fabric or is that fabric just 'finished product' fabric?

Also, what about shoes/accessories? Are they needed? Are they to be made from the fabric as well? Etc.

    13. You can make mockups out of any fabric you like, but use muslin only in the finished project. So no interfacing, underlining, etc.

    14. What about shoes? Can our dolls wear their own, or should they be made of muslin as well?

    15. How strict are the formal wear guidelines?
I'm asking in reference to female clothing. It says a gown, which traditionally means it needs to be floor length.

Nowadays many shorter style pieces are still considered formal, though they sometimes fall under semi-formal.

Just wondering if we're aiming for generally full length pieces or if that's up to the participants.

      Thank you :)

    16. "Formal" has been defined differently in different cultures and eras, so you can go with a past or current definition of "formal." So a shorter piece in today's style would be just fine, if it is currently considered "formal." So would a tomesode style kimono or elegant hanfu, or a 19th-century hoopskirt. The same goes for men's clothing-- it doesn't have to be tux and tails.

As for shoes, they should be made of muslin, as should any accessories. Wigs may be store bought, but keep in mind the focus of the contest is the outfit you've constructed, not the wig or faceup.

    17. Oooh, this sounds like fun! I may give this a shot!

    18. This is such a brilliant way to show one's talent! Great idea DoA!!!

    19. So, a bit confused.

We are supposed to use straight or zig-zag stitch, I get that. So is it okay to use like the zig-zag stitch and make like say zig-zaggy polka dots or something with it?
Or are the stitches just supposed to be for holding the garment together, and not decoration?

I want to know before I come up with any ideas. Haha

    20. Stitching should be only to hold the garment together, as this contest is focused on pattern design and construction.

    21. My doll in the photo have to be shod?
Shoes also need to make or can be left bare doll?

    22. Is it ok to show the pattern pieces drawn on to the fabric? I need to cut several of the same piece.

    23. Feet can be left bare, but shoes would be impressive!

Yes, tracing the pieces onto the fabric is fine. :)

    24. Oh I so want a grey Shiva. Trying to get a garment done before the end of the week will be a bit of a trial though. I will have to see if I can fit this contest in because I really, really want that doll.

Reading back the contest rules then I wouldn't be able to use a stiffener on the fabric because it would change the texture of it would I?

    25. Right, no stiffener or starch or other types of stabilizers. The unadulterated muslin and thread is all you have to work with.

    26. so I was reading the information that only zig zag stitch and straight stitch/or hand stitch does that mean one can embroider using the thread? or is the thread only for putting the garment together or top stitching. It says embellishments but I guess I'm not quite understanding what is or isn't ok to use the thread for.

    27. Embellishment includes things like gathering fabric, fagoting or pintucks, etc., things that affect the shape and construction of the garment, and where thread is used to attach fabric to fabric. Does that make sense?

      Edit:

      gathering

      Fagoting

      Pintucks or pleating

Two books that might give some inspiration:

Pattern magic 1 and 2 by Tomoko Nakamichi (If you do a google image search of the title, you'll see lots of images from the books.)

    28. 1. Are we allowed to hand-sew eyelets? Yes, hand-sewn are okay, but not metal ones.

      2. Are we allowed to use drawn-thread embroidery? Yes, as this alters the warp and weft of the fabric.

      3. Are we allowed to do smocking? Yes, as this sews fabric to fabric, but do not use the type that embroiders a picture on top.

      4. Can we use the weft/warp threads from the fabric to do anything with? (button loops, braiding them, etc.) Yes. You can cut, fold or shred the fabric, too.

    29. Thanks for the list. I have both of those books and I had completely forgotten about them. I will have to look through them again tonight.

    30. I'm jealous!

    31. wow that is alot of stuff I didn't think about and I think way out of my league to accomplish in a matter of a few days..really wanted to enter this competition but I think it may be beyond my meager simple design skills thanks for all the links, I'll have to study up for them for the future.

    32. If I nail this triathlon outfit tonight I may squeeze this one in.... I have some brilliant pattern drafting books from forever ago when i worked as a tailor and making them in calico as a toile was always the best part so this is brill I hope I can make the time work!

    33. Tell me please. You can make a collage on one of the photos? To show the fine details of the dress.

    34. That's correct! You can use a photo editing program to assemble a few small photos of the fine details into one larger image for submission. :)

    35. Thanks for those examples, especially as I have no idea how you do any of those! But now that I know they're a "thing", I'm going to have to look up some tutorials, especially on how to do that first one. Love the diamond smocking.

    36. Just making sure about the deadline... that means Sunday night at midnight EDT, right? Not Saturday-Sunday night?

    37. A countdown clock has been added to the first post ~ Please check that to confirm the time, Yenna :)

    38. Please indicate at the first pictures. It is necessary to take a picture of the doll and the next piece of fabric or cloth in which we cover the dress?Simply take a picture of the whole piece with the pattern on it did not turn out.

    39. You do not need to photograph the doll next to the fabric. You need at least one photo of your doll dressed in the finished outfit. You may submit up to three photos of the outfit. The fourth photo must be the flat fabric with the pattern drawn on it or the cut out pieces laid back into it.

    40. Ah, intersting... Can I do mildly decorative edging with zigzag and straight stitch - I am only thinking about edging fabric with say, three rows of zigzag, or zipping down my corset seams with straight stitching on the outside?

    41. That would be fine, as long as there is a structural reason for the stitches (as you described). :)

    42. Just making sure: we are allowed to add decorations (such as bows/flowers) to our outfits as long as they're made out of the same fabric, right?

Also, since there are only 3 spots for photos in the entry form, do we put the fourth one into the big one with the doll type?

    43. Yes, you can add flowers and bows as long as they come from the same piece of muslin. :)

ALSO, added the fourth line for the flat photo. :sweat

    44. Hi :) I'm a bit confused about the pictures, that we should provide. In rules it says :
But then, on the second page it was told that :
So I was wondering, is it possible to do a collage for all three pictures, that we should submit, or I should use it only for one of those pictures and only to show the details?

    45. You may include one collage. The other two should be either full body shots or single closeups.

    46. Thanks ^.^

    47. That would've been nice to know beforehand. ^^; I've already submitted and had two collages. Do I need to edit them?

    48. We are doing the best we can, given that mods are all volunteers and running these contests on top of our normal modding duties. But thanks for the input!

You can definitely resubmit so that you have a single collage photo.

    49. Two variants of women costume's wearing are allowed or not? And can I send one photo with first variant of wearing, second with another and third with a collage?

    50. Yes, I'm sorry to keep bothering you. I just don't want to do anything totally wrong. x_o I saw the okay for the collage, but didn't realize it was only one that was allowed.

There's no way to resubmit that I can see, but I've now replaced one of the collages I submitted with another photo. So the new one should show when the url is followed. I guess that fixes it, because it's pretty much the only thing I can do now.

    51. Yes. This is fine. Remember the photo with the fabric, too.

That worked, so you're good now.

    52. :? :...( .... :( *_* :...(... I've been racing between contests, got a late start discovering the whole anniversary thing to start with. I made a switch on my design to go from SD to an msd. When cutting time came I was so intense on getting all the photographing cuts made so as to be set up visible in my dinko camera, I forgot and used the whole 2/3 yard piece.

Debate,,,debate,,,4 hours left to recut and go again? I hate to give up. I've got a 1/2 yard piece ready to recut ~~ or

:| do I try to make the pieces work on an SD model.
I spent "forever" figuring out this design.

Well, I am learning a LOT by trying. :doh I will be SO READY next year. ...Haaa...

[and I was chanting to myself the whole time, measure twice, cut once. Guess my subconscious was trying to tell me something?]
I hope everyone is having fun though, and getting something they are happy with. Anyway, back at it ~

    53. Remember it's not just the length of the fabric that's important, it's the width, too. Maximum fabric width for any size doll is 1 meter (39 inches). :)

    54. Well I hope my photo of the fabric with pattern pieces is ok...I pinned all the pieces on and took a photo because there was no way that I'd be able to cut them out and place them back in order as I pretty much used every inch of the fabric. I add a ruler and tape measure across mine to show the width as well because one portion is folded and the bottom edge is unfolded. Hoping that was right. Working on finishing up now..cutting it close but I'm confident it will turn out great.

    55. OK, but the rules above say

"...any embellishment must be done with standard machine stitches (zig zag or straight stitch) or by hand using the matching sewing thread described above..."

So I am hoping that those guidelines are OK.

    56. Wow - I did not have any where near enough time to finish what I wanted to do. Then of course - I don't have a sewing machine so I had to hand sew everything. Well I threw together something that I think looks nice. I have the perfect fabric picked out for a final version.

    57. Entries are flowing in, there's ONE HOUR LEFT. Please don't leave your entry to the last minute!!

erellor I'm not sure if you had a question in there, I'm quite sorry I didn't get to your post earlier. Did you need to verify something?

    58. Laelen, I was confused because it seemed to me that there was conflicting info about the use of the straight machine stitch for embellishment. The rules said that you can, but I saw in a couple of places where it seemed like it was said that you could not use straight stitch in embellishment. I was just hoping that what I did was OK and not against the rules. :) At this point in the game, it's not like it matters, it can't get changed now, LOL... I just got confused while re-reading the thread. I wish I would have had more time to work on this, I only saw the post yesterday. (face-palm) But thank you Laelen.
