Who doesn't like cookies and hot cocoa with marshmallows? And who hasn't considered giving them to their doll? I swear they look happier for it.

Everything was done with prismacolor markers and pigma micron pens except for the addition of the text in photoshop.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My concept is that if a x-ray was taken of our dolls what would be seen, obviously elastics, but there is also a heart to show to love we put into them. I inked this by hand and colored it with my computer.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
My concept is simple.. they're there for us when we feel down, they listen when we need to talk and they always seem to understand you. Dolls can be quite human, and I wanted to depict that by showing a girl talking/laughing with her doll. As you can see, the doll is laughing along with her.

It's drawn digitally, using SAI and Photoshop (and Paint, lol).

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
When I intitally read the outline for the contest, I had this image pop into my head. I had the rough sketch drafted within minutes. I used a mechcanical pencil, a .1 inking pen, and an eraser pen for that. Then I scanned it into my computer and used Microsoft Paint to color it. The full process took three days.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
The concept is how BJD's can look so human, but they are not. They can also be a reflection of ourselves and what we want, which why the girl and the doll look very similar, but for example the doll has more dramatic makeup and dyed hair. The media is ink on paper and then digitally colored.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
Emotion is what many people identify as a human trait. When we look at the faces of our dolls, we can't but help see that faint glimmer in their eyes, that gentle smile or devious smirk that has started many a debate as to whether they may be more than "just dolls." That emotional "soul" is what I tried to capture here.
BJDs are also well associated with modifications, being from a simple faceup to a full gore mod. They are outlets for their owners imagination, helping to give it a tangible form. I felt vibrant colors would help represent this aspect.
Completely digitally done by mouse in Photoshop. =)

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
The theme being dolls as extensions of ourselves, I had the idea of a doll doing a face-up on a human. This portrays that they are an influence on us as we are on them, and also the connection between the doll and the owner. This drawing was done in Photoshop.

I wanted to try and show what it is like to truly be one with your doll. the figures are dressed the same, the doll figure being human sized and the human doll sized. It is like a blurring of reality. The colors chosen were to reflect the forum and give it an angelic feel.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
Its hard to deny that our dolls have a presence to them. Some may scoff, but anyone who's been introduced to Asian Ball Jointed Dolls knows, there's more to them than just pieces of resin. I based my idea on that first moment when a doll 'touches' their owner and becomes their doll and no one else's in the world. I feel that is the true driving force behind this hobby...our love and connection to these amazing, soulful dolls.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I decided to go with the 'Almost human' theme for this image! I went through a lot of sketches and ideas before finally choosing the concept of a 'human heart' to a doll. I then added more archetypal hearts to symbolize the emotion that accompanies gaining a scientifically 'human' heart~

I sketched out the image on paper before scanning it. Then in Photoshop I defined the lines, coloured it, and added text! ♥

Relationships, wonder, joy.

Not only do these things make us human, but they are also what DoA encompass as a forum - bringing different kinds of people together, forming relationships and sharing the joy and wonder of BJDs as a hobby.

I try to capture that by depicting two differently sized BJDs holding hands and setting off on a grand journey expectantly.

Who knows what manner of things that they will encounter? One thing is certain - it will be a wonderful adventure.

They had t-shirts with their faces flooding into the market which were considered Super Hip for teenagers of their time. How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I wanted to create an image that spoke to both of this year’s themes—Almost Human and Almost Doll. I was inspired by Michelangelo’s iconic painting on the dome of Sistine Chapel, of God and Adam, almost touching. I created a digital image of a bjd collector, represented by the woman, endowing her blank doll with a bit of her own humanity. As collectors, we give our dolls their looks and their personalities; we make them Almost Human.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
After reading about the t-shirt design contest, this image popped into my head and stayed there, as if inisistently asking to be created and shown. This version shows two dolls, yin and yang, angel, and demon. While it strays from the theme of "Almost Doll" or "Almost Human," I prefer this design over my other submission which features a human and a doll. ^-^

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
The theme of this design is yin and yang and portrays how we are so similar yet different from our dolls. We are similar in body structure and poseability, different in composition; flesh and bone to their resin and elastic. They are “almost human” sometimes, seeming to demand clothes and other expensive items from us—even resin companions. I drew the doll figure as a demon, because our dolls "demonically" suck all our money out of us, the innocent "angelic" humans.

I had two entries for the contest: one had more of a “light” tone, while the other had more of a “dark” tone. Both entries were created with the theme “Almost Human” in mind. This is the light one :3

This illustration is supposed to be reminiscent of the feeling one gets when they receive their first doll. The feeling of love and attachment, to me, is very human.

Piece was done in an Alphonse Mucha-like Art Nouveau style. Drawn and inked by hand, then colored and finished in both Photoshop/Corel Painter. It is designed to work on both light and dark backgrounds.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?

This illustration is inspired by an illustration done by a friend. I was stumped at first for a second idea (the first one came to me so easily!), so I started thinking of what makes us human. Emotions came to mind. So, the possession of a heart seemed logical (since our “hearts” dictate our emotions). It may be somewhat literal, but I think it captures what I was going for ;3

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I created this image using watercolor, colored pencils, real peacock feathers, and Photoshop. I made the black outer area, including the text, transparent so it can work just right on any color tee-shirt.

The concept is based from a character of mine who I am in the process of creating from a BJD in real life, but in the meantime I drew her as I would like her to eventually look.

I felt this image was fitting to the contest as she is not quite human. The wings I thought fit well with Den of Angels' theme and would be a good representation to pique people's curiosity about visiting the site.

This image was done completely with digital software.

The theme I wanted to portray the most was 'Almost Human'. I'm not sure if anyone else thought of this design but I think it's pretty straight forward; a BJD is sewing the forum's URL onto the very shirt you're wearing much like the one of the things many owners like to do when it comes to this hobby, sewing. (The background if supposed to be transparent, but since I had to save it as a JPEG I just made the background the color of the forum's posts. It should look this way on any colored shirt)

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
This is a digitally drawn and painted image of two dolls. A girl and a boy. I wanted to capture the moment when your doll is in it's WIP stage, or that box opening when you first receive your brand new doll. Many times these first steps, or the in between steps are forgotten. I think these are the most special of moments before finalizing your doll.

I also tried to capture the whole "Den of Angels" theme, with the togas and the wings.

I tried going for both of the concepts - "Almost Doll" because the girl is cosplaying as an alternate version of her favorite little girl, but also "Almost Human" because the doll is making eye contact with the viewer in order to connect with them, in a way.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
Drawn and colored in photoshop.

The original idea for this was a drawing of a doll and the owner, but done in a certain way that you have to stop and look closely to figure out which is which. Since the theme was 'almost human/almost doll' I figured it was appropriate.

How did you create this image? What was your concept?
I choose the theme "almost human" and the idea was drawing a bjd with a "heart". I first made a sketch and scanned it onto my computer where i used Photoshop to make a grafik image of it. I don't know where I could see that 300+ dpi thing, but I hope that if will be fine with 3~6000x3~6000 pixels (3,3 MB) is big enough?
