Super Easy SD tights method! Now with MSD and Stockings methods!

Jul 13, 2010

1. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are the instructions for SD tights - if you want the MSD instructions they are on post #41 and stockings are post #42 - hope you enjoy!

So, super easy tights for SD dolls :)

You will need:
[IMG]34242_411967906775_8073215_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Willing Volunteer (my friends RS Dai), old footless tights/leggings, pins, scissors

I did mine on a sewing machine, you could possibly hand sew these, but I haven't tried it.

[IMG]37903_411967986775_4360179_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Make sure your tights are insideout to start.
Slide the tights foot-hole first onto your doll. You want the ankle band of the tights to sit above the bellybutton/waist of the doll. If the pattern on the tights has a 'seam' (I will explain this in a picture later) you want it to sit centrally on the doll.
The next few steps are best done on a table or bed.

Cut the tights about 2cm further than then feet of your doll reach.

[IMG]37508_411968041775_255075_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Cut the top part of the tights (as shown) from the feet end up to just below your dolls crotch.

[IMG]35073_411968066775_5811100_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Cut the other side of the tights to the same point.

[IMG]35073_411968071775_1257486_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Take the 'tights' off your doll. This is the end of the first part :)

2. [IMG]38286_411968116775_7892227_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Pin the crotch area together. Your pin should be 1cm from the cut edge - this is the seam allowance. It should prevent your fabric from getting caught in the sewing machine (Although it is not guaranteed!)
Pin the feet ends of the tights closed.

Place your willing volunteer onto the fabric, with the outside of their leg almost on the outer (folded) edge.

[IMG]38245_411968141775_1479046_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Pin close to the other side of her leg, one pin just above the ankle, and the other just below the knee. Do this for both legs.

[IMG]38368_411968226775_5449524_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Now pin the rest of the way up the leg - at the top of the legs next to the crotch, the pin should be 1cm away from the cut edge. The next one down will be between this pin and the following one (see image). This means that the tights will fit to your dolls legs well.

This is the end of the pinning! Next, sewing!

3. Take your tights to the sewing machine.

[IMG]38368_411968231775_3763662_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
Starting with the folded edge, sew and back-tack 4 to 5 stitches to hold the seam.

Sew on an angle in, then straight, then back on an angle to the second pin - see next picture...
Sew up the first leg, across the crotch, and then sew the other leg - the foot will follow the reverse instructions as the first one.

[IMG]38027_411968281775_5498153_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
You can see the general shape that you need here

Next, cut the excess around the seam. You want to leave about 0.5cm next to the sewing, and cut as close as you can to the corners, so that they are not too bulky.

[IMG]38225_411968336775_1135947_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
This is what you should now have

Turn the tights right side out

[IMG]35183_411968341775_6016702_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
This is what you should have now :)

Now put them on!

YAY now your doll has tights!

4. Great tutorial:)
Thanks,
Susan

5. Great tutorial, nice and easy to follow. :)

6. Thank you! Having made the first pair I was like "Oh, that was so easy! OMG everyone should make these!" hehe

Thankies! I am glad people like it. I hate seeing old clothes go to waste, and tights are often not useable after they get a ladder on one side. (Unless you're my mother who cuts them up to tie her climbing plants to the trelis framing....)

7. Wow, those do seem very easy... I should go to the thrift store now and try this out.

8. They are really easy once you get the hang of it - as you sew the material will be stretched a little, make sure you let it do this, it prevents the tights from rumpling.

9. Thanks for this! I have to go try it out.

10. realy cool tutorial ,
Thank you for sharing .

11. Awesome tutorial! It makes it seem so easy.

12. Yay cute! and if you dont sew the feet you could make leggings too!

13. I followed this tutorial and made great tights for my SD girl~! Thanks a bunch!

14. Great idea. I've been trying to find a good source for tights fabric.

15. with this tutorial i made thigh high socks!

16. Awesome! I hadn't thought of doing those! But now I am definitely going to have to try!

I am lucky, cause my sister and heaps of her friends and I went through a big tights phase, so there are heaps lying around! Hopefully my mum will give me some of her sheer ones when she next has a pair that ladders.

No problems!

Oohh thats a good idea! I will have to wait until my girl has some different shoes, cause her current ones are red inside and I wouldn't want to stain her little toes!

:)

:dance

I am so glad that people have enjoyed it!

17. Thanks for posting this! I will defiantly follow this when I get my doll!

18. Oooo~~ that's so easy! -wants to run off and make tons of tights, leggings, and socks, now.- Thank you for sharing C8

19. Yay! Tights are such a basic thing, I hate spending so much $$ + shipping on them. I wonder if this would work for MSD-sized dolls if you took the waist in at the "seam" first? Will try & report back :dance

20. Thanks, cool tutorial. Great idea

21. No problem!

I have been saving up all my old tights lately 'cause my incoming MNF is supposed to love tights, so I can't wait til she gets home so I can make her some!

I am hoping that will work as when my MNF arrives I want her to have lots! If anything I would think that cutting two whole seperate pieces and then sewing together would work well too.

Thanks! I am glad people like it!

22. This also works if you want sheer stockings--do just the same thing with a knee-high nylon stocking, using the ankle band for a waistband. Works like a charm.

23. *Rubs hands together* I'll definately have to try this.....

24. I love your tutorial! I think I'll have to sit down by the machine again soon.. *Adding to favorites*

25. I am still saving up for my first doll & looking at things like this make me so excited!
I cannot wait to get her to try this out.

26. Oh cool! I hadn't gotten around to testing it on more sheer fabrics - glad to know it works!

*grins* When I thought it up that was my first reaction XD

Aw thank you! I always get to a point where I haven't sewn in ages, and then just make a decision to and sit down and sew for ages!

Aw I hope she comes soon so you can try! It is a really great thing to make when they first get home - they are a lot easier than trousers and faster!

27. Wow, that is really, really easy! I hate making tiny pants, so I am definitely going to try that. Thanks!

28. OOO awesome! Now I can try and make some sexy pants for my doll and other jester tights!

29. This is great. I have been afraid to try and make tights for my BJDs, but now I can't wait. Thanks!

30. Very cool tutorial! It looks like you could do this for any size doll. Once I find some stretchy fabric laying around somewhere, I'll make sure to try it :D It seems easy ^^ <3 Thanks for sharing!

31. oh this is neat, i can use this method to make leggings too or maybe footed pjs.

32. Oh My Gosh! I am so sure you could use this idea with msd too!! :) All you would need are some little girl's leggings! :D

33. No problem!

OOO I hadn't even thought of jester tights! I am sure if you cut two different pairs of tights legs in half then sewed mis-matched colours back together you could easily make each leg a different colour!

No problem - when I first realised that I wanted my dolls to have tights I was really worried about it too!

I have yet to try it for my teeny-tiny dolls, but I can't wait for my MNF to come home to make these for her!

Footed PJs - that is something I HAVE to try!

If doing it for a smaller doll, go for little girls leggings that are for kids 3years or younger - above that age group and they are just too big!

34. Great tutorial! And so easy! I'll definitely be trying this when I get my Shall in. ^_^

35. I did this with a MSD and they came out pretty good. I just have to figure out how to fit the waist.

36. I tried out this tutorial but made some tights/pants out of a knee-high sock that I had lying around!
Here's the finished product;

I never would've thought about doing something like this!
Thank you for the tutorial! 8D

37. Cool! I am glad that it will be used!

Yes, that will be my pet project once my MNF arrives - if I find a super method I will post it!

Your girl looks gorgeous! They turned out really well with the thicker fabric of a sock too!

38. thats super cool

39. Thanks! I am glad you like it!

40. good tutorial!
easy to understand
Thanks for share.

41. So, these instructions are how to use the Super Easy SD tights method to make MSD tights. Will also work for YoSD too! Just cut more off!

So, same basic equipment as before:
[IMG]248964_10150194928031776_8069860_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

[IMG]247904_10150194928331776_1487388_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr
The first thing you need to do is cut the tight leg off long enough for your doll. I just lay mine along next to my doll so that the band was where I wanted it to sit, and cut off the leg about 2 inches below her feet.

Cut this 'tube' of tights to make a single flat piece/oblong.

Lay it under your doll, right side up, your doll should be on the right side of the fabric:
[IMG]248277_10150194928061776_6744961_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Now, pull the two sides up at the waist, and pin together.
[IMG]250629_10150194928086776_28837_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Repeat step until you reach about 1cm below the dolls crotch.
[IMG]250093_10150194928146776_6584822_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Now sew along this line, stopping at the end of the final pin. Try to sew slightly smaller than the pins, rather than bigger - it will make the tights fit better!
[IMG]247036_10150194928191776_2326630_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Trim off the excess fabric
[IMG]248447_10150194928226776_2432969_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Now slide this back onto the doll, and make sure you have your new seam central on your dolls front. Cut up the lower layer, like with the SD tights method. Don't cut any higher than your stitching on the upper layer though!
Then pull the fabric around your dolls legs as with the SD method, and pin in place.
[IMG]248878_10150194928246776_6215224_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Then sew! Just as before, go slowly, and have about a 1cm seam allowance, or as much as you are comfortable with.

And there you have it! MSD tights!

42. And now stocking instructions! No more spending money on stockings and shipping - you can make them at home!

Cut a length of tights longer than your dolls leg - or at least 2 inches longer than your intended stocking length! Turn inside out.

Slide this onto ONE of your dolls legs. When the top band is where you want the stocking to sit, stop and pin the fabric together at the top.
[IMG]250924_10150194928376776_8131764_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Pin the whole way down the leg, and around the foot.
[IMG]248305_10150194928406776_2825688_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Cut the excess off.

You will now notice that the excess is enough to make another stocking! Use the same technique to make the second stocking.
[IMG]250377_10150194928436776_4334841_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

You will now have two pinned fabric pieces. It doesn't matter if one has more excess than the other - mine did and turned out fine!
[IMG]249501_10150194928471776_5858540_n by Miss Carrion, on Flickr

Sew along the pin line carefully - as with the tights, try to sew smaller than the pin line, rather than bigger, or your tights will be baggy.

Once all sewn, turn right side in. Look! You now have a gorgeous, recycled, money saving pair of tights for your doll!

43. thanks for posting this you saved my brain's life i kept wondering how to sew a white legging for my doll

44. Excellent tutorial! When my sister and I were at Target a couple days ago, there were footless tights on clearance, and we picked some up with the express purpose of trying this (they were cheap enough! Though if I'd had an old partly-worn out pair the right colour, I suppose it would be a no-money deal...) Anyway, looking forward to making my boy's tights! And hey, while I'm at it, I can make some stockings the same colour for my other guys... well... or for future dolls of the same size, if they won't wear them.

=^__^=

45. I kept trying (and failing -- too baggy). Thank you so much for the tutorial. I hope you don't mind. I posted my try on my blog and I credited you for the tutorial here on DOA. http://dollutional.blogspot.com

Here's my girl in some great fitting stockings! Thank you.

46. Aw thanks! And I am glad I saved your brain, they are fairly important!

There are ALWAYS sale tights around my area, so I keep an eye out as well. But I also always tell my friends if they ladder a pair of tights that I will want them!

No problems - I am glad it helped!

47. My attempt to modify this to make leggings for my MSD girl:

I learned that I need to cut it much higher, and I need to add some elastic around the waist (since I made them out of shirt fabric and not tights, there was nothing to keep them up, and they fall easily). Still, they look pretty awesome! Thanks so much for the tutorial!

48. Hey those look great! Yeah, Leggings are harder cause they need more in the crotch/back area - I haven't been brave enough to try them!

49. Wow, you have great tutorials. I can't wait to try this, think I check out the clearance sections to see if I can pick up fun colors cheap! I can make one for mine and one for a friend.

Thanks so much!!

50. Aw thanks for thinking it was great! I hope you do manage to find some cool colours - I keep finding really adorable ones at dollar stores here!

51. Great tutorial!!!! thanks :)

52. Thanks for the tutorial!
I made some tights from some odd-knee socks I had lying around, they came out perfectly on my SD sized girl 8D (they don't even come out at the back when she sits!)

53. Guess who's going the fabric store tomorrow. thank you so much for this tutorial!!

54. No problem! Glad you liked it!

Excellent! It is so frustrating when tights do that, on a doll or a person! And odd socks are the best - I did a clean out recently, I have sooo many for tights now!

No problem - it should also work with any light-mid weight stretch fabric to make leggings - I have my eye on some sparkly silver and pink lycra for one of my girls!

55. Here's my first try with some clearance flowered tights. My girls a LaTi green so she's only about 30 cm and chunkier than some but still cute with her new hat from a doll show last weekend. Also I thinking about using the rest of the cut leg tight material for a swing dress ie, 60s style.....she might hate that but she'll love the other tights I'm going to make!

56. Thats really cool! Well done for making them so small! I LOVE the pattern of them, it looks perfectly in size for her!

57. Tights! These are perfect and I'm def going to give this a shot. Thanks so much for sharing!

58. Heh, yeah when I realised how easy they were my first thought was "OH MY GOODNESS everyone should know how to do this!!" XD

59. I have made some leggings for my girl, and it worked out just fine :)
I will post some photo's soon :)

60. wow! thank you so much for sharing that. i have been trying to make tights for ages, but i could never find the right knit fabric. ❛‿❛
