Wearables Summer hat that would fit Audrey Hepburn style

Jun 18, 2025

    1. Hi! Just finished a summer hat in 1960ies style, something you would expect to see Audrey Hepburn wearing for breakfast at Tiffany’s or on a Roman holiday. Fits 1/3 or bigger doll.

It’s linen, crochet. Used a very small needle to make the hat stiffer. So much that pulling the thread through required force. Started from centre, top, made the flat pancake part 6-7 cm diameter, then stoped adding stiches and it went downwards to form sides.

For the brim I added 2 stiches in each previous for 1 full row, then just continued without adding any till ready. That is what gives that characteristic 1960ies shape when the brim looks a bit like a lamp shade. When happy with the size, the very last row was just pull loops through to make the edge somewhat coherent.
When ready, l washed it, there was lots of dust in the yarn. Starched mercilessly, pulled over a cup covered with a towel, ironed in shape. Just starch, hot iron, brutal force, no cheating.

Glued on the ribbons, one green, one gold. Leftovers from a gift packaging. In the photo you see the moment when the pins hold ribbons in place while the glue settles. Made the bow, glued that on. The flower crown is made of plastic artificial flowers, the smallest blossoms that I could find. Because the plastic stems are quite hard I didn’t do the normal way with just stems or stems+ thread, I sew all the flowers on another green ribbon. The crown can be worn separately or on the hat.
Funny how just a tiny difference of the light shows so very different colour in photos. I mean the same light source, just falling at a different angle.
Have to make something matching for the guy too. But right now l’m knitting knee high socks for them both.

    2. That looks amazing, I would have never have been able to see the head of the hook let alone the ability to do that. That is a skill and talent. Love this! Thank you for sharing the info and photos.

    4. This looks amazing!

Not sure if you even want a suggestion for this, but it helps when you need extra tension: I recommend using a Portuguese knitting necklace with two loops.

I had to start using one of these for regular knitting because of issues with my hands, but the ones with double loops can create a lot of extra tension on their own. You might not need to use quite so much force on your own.

Anyway! The hat is beautiful and I love the choice of linen yarn. There’s so much beautiful detail in this project, thank you for sharing!

    5. Thank you! You don't really need to see the head of the hook, just know it's there and fetching the yarn. I knit and crochet while watching tv or reading. The work is kinda in the area of sight but I'm not directly looking. Decades ago at school during lessons did all the work under the table, not looking at all.

      Thank you!

Thank you! I think I'm very set in my ways already. 50 years of doing it leaves a trace. Heard about Portuguese style literally a few months ago. That it exists. Looks interesting but I think I leave it at that. Although good to know for the future, may need it if my hands decide to give up.
