Hi you guys! I've started to mess around with blender and wanted to know what some of your opinions are (both digital and traditional) for the MM thickness of the material? Obviously you don't want it to be too thick because it would be a waste, but it being too thin could damage the structural integrity of the doll. I'd love to know your opinions!
I don't know much about 3D printing, so take this for what it is. Do you have your own printer? If so, why not print out a few small sample shapes in different thicknesses? That way you can test strength and weight and get a feel for the material.
You want it to be 10mm - ish thick in all areas for stability... it kind of depends on the type of printer and whether you're using a resin printer or filament printer. When I hollow my prints I leave the nose and ears, for example, un-hollowed but hollow out most of the head. A filament printer with that brittle abs plastic will actually hollow for you and there will be supports inside. A resin printer will print whatever you put in the program (so solid if you send in solid) but beware if you if you are printing something that's hollow with a resin printer, make sure you have at least two separate exit holes or your print may have weird warping. I've had both filament printers and currently have a resin printer so feel free to ask more questions if this is confusing. I've also sent many things to Shapeways so I can help answer questions on how to hollow for them without getting the piece too thin for their printing standards. Unfortunately I'm much more familiar with ZBrush than Blender but I can try and help
Thanks so much for replying! Even what you just said was insanely helpful, lol! It's going to be a while before I deal with printing itself, but I like to know what to be thinking about ahead of time!!
