actually, i think this has been discussed..... but, it is perfectly ok to put a doll in water. i would be cautious about using the soaps however, as they could have oil in them, and oil is a big no for dollie resin.... the outside resin itself, can simply be wiped/patted dry after being wet.... the inside... and the elastic.... that would also have to be dried... meaning, you would have to unstring the doll to allow all that to dry properly. i would unstring the doll, and lay the pieces, including the elastic, out to dry naturally... or in a pinch.... i have been known to use a hair dryer....
Has it ^^ Sorry then ^^ I might have to re search again XD That's what i thought but it is always good to others opinions thank you ^_______^
Is there a specific soap that has no oil in it that is safe to use for cleaning? I've got a tiny doll that has been handled quite a bit and is bit sticky and dirty. I think his body blushing might not have been sealed because every time I pick him up he's sticky and the paint seems to come off a little. I want to make sure I don't do anything dumb, this will be my very first cleaning experience o.o Any help would be greatly appreciated~_^
Mitya: I was going to as the same question about specific soaps: I know not to use Palmolive, but I'm iffy about the lemon scented 'ultra concentrated' home life dish washing soap as well as what kind of Dawn soap to use...
I've been wondering, is it bad to get your doll wet (aside from the face and wig) as long as it doesn't have body blushing? I heard something about not getting water in the joints, but i'm not sure. Help, please?
You don't want to get their elastic wet because of mildew/mold. As long as the doll is sealed (MSC) water won't hurt their blushing. If a doll does get wet, on purpose or by accident, just unstring them to let their parts and elastic air dry.
I've had mischief in a creek before, and I haven't had any adverse effects. I ddin't even need to unstring him, I just pop his joints out and dried off the insides really well, and he's not had any rotting or mould. His joints didn't even really get any water on the insides, but he wasn't completely submerged either. As for soaps, I used the Dawn ultra concetrate to clean mischief's head after I took off his face up (just to be sure there weren't any nasty residues leftover) and it worked like a charm with no adverse effects. Made the resin really nice and clean really quickly. There is a warning, if you have watercolor pencils used in faceups DO NOT get them wet. Mischief's washed off. the blushing all stayed, but the watercolor pencil was gone.
It's kind of common sense.. -^-;; I mean, they're made of plastic and elastic. (And MSC is resin too, it says so on the can.) What are swim suits and goggles made of? But yeah, just don't leave the wet elastic inside, mildew and rust is nasty stuff. THAT can creep into the resin, I've heard of it happening.
That's a really fun idea. I'd do it to any doll that I do the faceups on anyway 'cause if the finish started reacting to the water, I'd just redo it As far as the chord goe, I got dolls only a year and a half old, and they seem to need fresh chords anyway. It's easy enough to restring, as far as damaging, I can't imagine damage to anything except the faceup and the chord. The resin shouldn't have any problem. That's really so little clorine in a pool! For a cool picture, I'd do it But if I had a professional faceup, no way :P Oh yah, I had my tinies in the lake once, LOL, I just let them dry out on thier own, no damage, but the lake had tiny bits of iron in the sand, and tat iron still kind of clings to their magnets on their feet, LOL. No biggie! Those aren't the dolls I have loose chords in (that's my Banji)
I hear all the time about people wanting to take pictures of there dolls underwater (possibly in chlorinated pools) but they are too afraid of what the water will do to their face ups, wigs, eyes and clothes etc.
BarraArisa - It's pretty much well-documented--faceups will wash off, clothing will get wet (and chlorinated if you're doing it in a pool), same with wigs...and the elastic inside will get wet. But it won't hurt the resin itself. I've put my doll's foot in water before for a shoot and she had no issues.
well maybe the products that are put in the pool water could be bad to the resin or the faceup, but just water wont do anything! (i tried) though i've put my boy's feet in the pool and nothing happened either (and he is tanned with RIT. and i think he had a full body blushing back then)
Water itself won't hurt the resin at all and it won't necessarily hurt the elastic either as long as you make sure it's totally dry. I would recommend taking the doll apart to make sure the inside of the doll and the elastics are all 100% dry. I definitely plan to have my Soom Iv in some watery photoshoots. n_n And of course, water will wash off a faceup though one that's REALLY well sealed should be okay. I still wouldn't chance it though unless you're like me and do your own faceups and don't mind redoing them anytime. ^o^
Here's a pic of when I unstrung two of my boys and gave them a bath. I did scrubbed them with magic eraser as well. Only half of their body parts here, since I dont wanna be wrong about their right and left parts when I stringed them back XD
Anyone ever used "sunlight" dish soap? I'm overseas and it's the only thing here I'm afraid... Doesn't look like there's any weird stuff in it.... As for getting dolls wet, I've taken a photoshoot of my boy in the rain, and in a river, AND standing in the ocean (not the face though :P) he's been fine through all of them, i just dry him off as soon as I can and sometimes take his feet off to dry inside his feet, but that's it. I've seen photoshoots taken in baths and such too, but I don't think anyone's done it in a chlorinated pool before.... I wouldn't...
The brand of dish soap I used is also called 'Sunlight'. Not sure if it's the same though, but I always used it on my dolls when cleaning them and nothing bad had happened ;3
Thanks!! I just washed my boy completely using a tub of warm water mixed with green Sunlight dish soap and a tub of cool water (to dunk the pieces after scrubbing with a small terrycloth towel) it worked MAGNIFICENTLY! I swear he looks like he came straight out of the box!!! He's perfect again XD
Sorry If I necro'd this thread, but I thought it would be better than creating a new thread.. Does anyone know if fiber wigs are okay to put in water? Will they frizz/curl after?
You can put STRAIGHT fiber wigs in water just fine... I'm not sure about curly wigs though... I have washed fur wigs, mohair, and fiber wigs with water and they didnt get damaged or anything :3
I just inherited an old Dollmore. He was a member of a heavy smoker's household. I've washed all his clothing, and given his body a bit of a cleaning, but I think I'm going to have to unstring him completely and do the full detail. I also think I'm going to have to replace his elastic, not only from age, but from the smoke. I really like his old-fashioned face-up and I don't know if I can safely save that with this full cleaning I have to do. Now my question: Is OXIclean ok to use on the resin doll, because I think it's the only thing that is going to get that odor out?
Have you tried using baking soda? Its really good to get smelly stuff out. I found this thread on how to remove the smell of cat pee, maybe it will work with the smell of smoke ^-^? http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...id-odour-(cat-pee)-from-resin&highlight=urine
Hey DoA, its been alittle while sense i posted last. Another quest for all the BJD lovers. Can Dolls go swimming? Because i have a under water cam and i would love to do photo shoots under water. Still no BJD but one is getting set up. Anyways please help im just kinda wondering before i get my doll and do something stupid to it. Hugs: AP
Ryuukossei, (is your username based off of Inuyasha?) I don't think so. My dollie's feet have heavy blushing and Z-Spray on them, as well as a pedicure, and I did a photoshoot where she stood in water. She was fine and still is There wasn't anything different about her blushing that I noticed.
If your doll is properly sealed, there should be no issue in water. I have experienced lightening on a faceup while cleaning with a magic eraser, but I also tend to coat faces much more lightly than body parts. So take caution, but overall it should be fine
I give my doll a both once every 3 months, and I would recommend to unstring the doll before submerging it in the water or else the insides will get moldy. I have not seen any differences in the resin, I use mild soap one bowl for soapy water and another bowl for rinsing and then air dry the doll
When washing my dolls I unstring them and use warm soapy water (just plain hand soap). Scrubbing with a bit of white towel seems to get rid of any dirty spots. Rinse with cold water and dry with a towel, then I leave all the pieces out on the towel to completely dry under a fan. Also I've had no problem cleaning heads with faceups that I have done myself. If it is sealed properly, it shouldn't be a problem. I remove the eyes and/or eyelashes before hand. I don't know if you'd want to risk it on a face-up you couldn't easily repair yourself if there was a problem though. And about water shots, the biggest problem is the elastic not drying properly. If you're willing to unstring and let it dry properly after a photo shoot, there shouldn't be any problem submerging your doll in run-of-the mill tap water.
Yes this reminds me of rubber ducks, after hanging out in the tub for a while my son squeezed one and all this mildew came out! It was so gross! I imagine moisture would do the same to the inside of a doll! I for sure wouldn't submerge any of my dolls!
I also would never submerse my full-assembled dolls in the water! I feel like their elastic strings would never dry and they'd get mildew-y, moldy, or damaged. As much as I want to photograph my dolls in the snow as well, I worry about getting their innards wet.
Seeing as this is a master thread no one should mind me necro-ing it. I've sort of read through this but 17 pages is a lot of info to go through... So I've just finished doing a full body blush on my DZ Moon and I want to take her outside for some photos in the new spring flowers, problem is, it's been raining on and off for the last two days and my housemate has been waiting for me to take the photos so he can cut the grass (and the flowers ) before the house inspection next week. Would the wet grass damage the blushing or the MSC at all? I've sealed her with three coats of MSC...so I'm hoping that's enough. Thanks!
The water from grass won't harm the msc, it's not water solvent. However you will want to pat her with a towel if she does get water on her. If the water gets on get joints at all you might just wanna unstring her after the shoot and let her air dry for a while. Water won't damage the resin but it might damage the elastic if it's left wet.
Thanks for that - nothing should get in, but I'll prop her leg and ankle joints open afterward to get some flow through. Thanks!
