Steampunk girl Mod- From a Luts 2005 Juri to something else! (many large pictures)

Feb 7, 2011

    1. Hello!

After many weeks of flip-flopping, I've finally decided to take my poor neglected Juri and transform her into a Steampunk dolly!

This is my first major mod, and I've been making it up as I go, really. I've found inspiration through various other mods on the board, and so my Steampunk girl is finally being born!

Forgive my lame first post, I'm no good at writing XD Now, on to the pictures?

I didn't take any before pictures, silly me, but here's my progress so far:

      Her upper torso and chest:

The hole in the back will eventually be filled with a turn key.

      Her lower torso:
It will be filled with gears and have a glass-like portal placed over the front.

      Her head and face:
I've opened her eyes, and sanded off her ears. One of them had broken previously, and instead of trying to fix it (and fail miserably, I'm sure) I've decided to replace them with copper-colored caps that will come later.
Her removed ears and old face-up.

Here's my favorite part so far! Her thigh ^^ Like her chest, I've whiddled down the upper layer of resin to give it a wood-like texture, which will later be enhance with pastels.

      After!:

This is all very rough work now, she will be sanded and smoothed down over the next few days ^^ Please let me know what you all think so far! I'll try to scan in a few conceptual sketches either tonight or tomorrow... Thanks again for looking!

    2. Well! Not much to update , but here's a little something that I did tonight

Her new nose! I took her head and boiled the front part for about a minute before squishing it down. I wanted to give her that 'broken nose' feel, instead of the up-turned one she's had before:

Also, I smoothed out her thigh a bit more, got rid of the 'fuzzies' ( I really don't know what else to call them, lol):

And, as a bonus, the first look at her other leg! Rough, of course, but a good idea of what's going to be going on inside. I'm going to place gears on the flat areas, then wire is going to be wrapped around her in a 'x' pattern through the holes:

And, another bonus! Why resin should never be sanded without a respirator, lol:

Please excuse my cigarettes and polka dotted sleeping pants XD More updates soon!!

    3. Reserved... again, lol.

    4. Looks interesting! I can't wait to see how she turns out!

    5. You're actually making a lot more work for yourself than you need to. You should use an appropriate size dremel tip and go slow, because right now the mods look very chunky and rough. I know you can sand them out later, but why take an additional amount of hardwork, time, and elbow grease when you can get it done in one or two layers by taking your time with the dremel?

    6. Yay! You started! I can only imagine the huge amount of resin dust...But that's half the fun of dremelling resin (as long as you have a respirator, of coarse). Best of luck with her! You're making a lot of great progress. :)

Edit: I just re-read it and saw the part about the carved wood! Epic!

    7. Fabulous! I love mods - subscribing!

    8. She looks amazing so far ^^ I adore steampunk, so I can't wait to see what all you do with her -subscribes-

    9. I really hate to be rude, but what is on that head?!?! It looks like someone spilled coffee on it and never cleaned it up :S ... also, aren't you afraid your long nails are going to get in the way of the mods? In my experience with fake nails, I could never do anything regarding intricate work without them being a hindrance. That's what looks like happened with the thigh joints (in regards to all the gouges).

Anyhow, I'm interested to see what you're going to do and how this turns out.

    10. kayke- This is the VERY start of her mods, I'm nowhere near done with the finishing or dremeling. I was just so excited about how the start of it was going I had to share ^^

QuearvoS- Thanks! The amount of dust is insane, I started in my craft room and had to move out to the garage by the time I reached her thigh o.o It was insane. And of course I'm wearing all my protective gear, I'm not that silly, haha.

Zoid5, claywimmin & Fanged Rose- Thank you!

Tallevnyaere- That's actually an experiment with freckles that I haven't bothered to wipe off yet, she's getting a new face-up soon enough when I finish the mods on her face. And my nails, well, those have been there for years and haven't bothered me yet, lol. She isn't finished by ANY stretch of the imagination, I've got alot more work ahead of me on all of her parts. The gouges you are talking about will actually be part of the finished project, I imagine she was carved by a man with not a lot of skill when it comes to wooden objects.

    11. I love steampunk, and I am totally going to keep watching this thread. You have more guts than I do, but I can't wait to see how this turns out.

    12. I'm worried about the pieces you carved a lot out of... I wonder if they're strong enough to not snap under the tension from the elastic when it's strung?

    13. This is looking really good so far! I'm interested to see how she looks when she's finished.
Good luck with the rest of the modding! -Subscribed-

    14. Doll-Mage- She will be strung using an alternative method so there is not much tension on her carved parts ^^

DustyGirl92- Thanks! If she hadn't been sitting around for nearly a year in a plastic bag, unstrung, I don't think I could have finally gotten up the guts to do it, lol

    15. Wow this looks like it's definitely going to be an interesting project! It'll be fun seeing what else you do with her. ^^

    16. woooooohooo very brave ^^ i am sure your dolly will be epic!!!

    17. Very interesting project... I´m very curious to see the result.

    18. Thank you everyone for your well wishes and praise ^^ It is certainly doing something to make me feel that this was the right thing to do, lol. I just hope she turns out as well as she is in my mind!

    19. Wow! Good luck with making her, it seems like its going to be a really huge job with all the intricate cogs and wires and what not! I hope she turns out the way your planning and I cant wait to see how she turns out, Good luck again!

    20. Man, oh man I can't wait to see her finished!

    21. Thanks everyone! I should have an update tomorrow ^^

    22. She looks great so far! I love watching mods (and doing them, heh) because I like to not only see the end product, but all the steps in-between, from the base doll, to the really rough start, to the 'polished' finish. I love seeing how even a mod that looks totally rough when it's started can look amazing when every aspect of it finally pulls together at the end! And this girl is looking like she's going to be not only an amazing finished product, but have a LOT of fun and interesting steps to see along the way!

    23. this mod looks very interesting! i think she'll turn out great! can't wait to see more! ^^

    24. Woah. That's a lot of dust!

An interesting start, indeed. I can't wait to see the progression to the finished product!

    25. I'm interested to see how this turns out
And moreso... you boiled her face and reshaped her nose? I had no idea that was even possible.

    26. OMG that's really impressive O.O
I can't wait to see her finished, I am a huge steampunk fan

    27. Steampunk is amasing style)) I whant to see a final result!

    28. Well I think you are very brave!!!!! And I look forward to seeing more progress
and your finished doll of course because your ideas look really interesting XD

On a side note regarding some comments:
Advice is great, but once the work is done it comes off more like criticism unless it's
said carefully. No matter how much we might try to research others methods of doing
something, when we actually do it it's our first time!!!! But isn't that part of the
"joy" of creating your own doll? I would hate to see people decide against sharing
their projects out of fear that they will be insulted in some way :(

    29. im really interested to see the rest of this!

    30. You've put in so much hard work and she looks fantastic! I can't wait to see her develop more. Are you going to be fitting custom glass-like portals or filling the 'portals' with clear resin?

    31. Awesome work- Very eager to see the rest of this, she is going to be beyond words!

    32. I'm subscribing! She looks amazing so far! I cant wait to see more progress!

    33. Gosh, guys, thanks!

And I'm SO SORRY about not updating this yet XD I've been super busy lately with a schedule change and haven't been able to work on her much... Hopefully by next weekend I'll be able to take some pictures.

For a non-pictured update, she's been sanded all over, then dyed dark brown for the wooden parts, and then red over the rest of the skin to hide when the painting I'm doing starts to flake in the joints ^^ Her 'normal' parts are bronze, with miliputt additions that I can't describe too well in words, lol.

Like I said, hopefully I'll have pictures by the end of this week since I'm going back to my normal job ^^;; Thanks for being so patient!

    34. Very interested in seeing the end product! Good luck with all the modding you're doing!

    35. wow, super extreme mod... I like the leg where you'll be doing X wires on... the idea is very intriguing. And the concept is awesome though the rough scares me. *O*
can't wait to see her done

    36. Oh my! This girl is very interesting, I can't wait to see her finished! :D

    37. Looks great! I remember seeing another steampunk (major) mod that looks like gave you some inspiration! Keep at it.. little by little and she'll come together. Can't wait to see the progress.

Lula78 ... nicely said about some comments. I'd hate for people to not share because of poorly worded/thought-out comments.

    38. Interesting! Looking forward to seeing her finished ^__^

    39. This is very interesting and I can't wait to see more of her :)

    40. I'm not crazy about steampunk for myself, but I love to see it on others & such. Can't wait to see more of this. Your ideas sound great.

    41. This is a glorious project! I am enamored with how elegant the carvings look. And most of all, her nose! I've always been a fan of noses as a big part of making a face what it is, and all dolls have very bland schnozzes, but what you've done has made her face truly individual~

Sorry if I'm too creeper about this haha

    42. I'm in love with your concept and it sounds like you're having a blast working on it! I'm subscribing to this. I cannot wait to see her come together. Also, the nose is amazing-you really just pushed it down with your finger? could you please post a pic of her head straight on so I can see the bridge? (thanks in advance!) Please keep the updates coming-it's so much more cool to see how it all comes together then just the finished project (in my opinion anyway!)
      glory

    43. Wow! I love steampunk so Im interested to see how she turns out.

    44. This seems cool 8D my hands would never be skilled enough to make or mod a doll like that >< good luck and can't wait to see her when it's finished!

    45. Wow this looks like it'll be amazing when its done! So creative! Cant wait to see the finished project!

    46. oh my. I'm bookmarking this tread. It's going to be awesome *_*

    47. I cant wait to see how it turns out - love it when steampunk is done really well :)

    48. Have you been able to work on her at all? You described some updates on an earlier page, but never posted the pictures. O.o Share, share! She looks fascinating.

    49. This looks so cool, I'm so excited to see more updates of her. I don't think I could ever mod a doll... I'd screw up and ruin the doll lol
Are you gonna have steam punk clothing for her too?

    50. Yeah, I second that request!! I'm waiting with baited breath (silly expression, wot??) to see the progress of this marvelous mod.

    51. This looks like it's coming along nicely! I cannot wait to see how it turns out~ especially the legs! *u*
Good luck~ post more pics soon!

    52. I need moar ;A; BEAUTIFULLL

    53. amazing!! :D

I was thinking of modding my bjd in steampunk style as well but I wasn't sure.
but you have completely inspired me to go ahead and do it! :D

I hope mine looks at least half as good as yours! > u<

    54. How is it going? I'm waiting for more updateeeeeeeeees >w<

    55. I'm excited to see how she's looking :) would love to see an update :D

    56. Ah, I would be terrified to do this much modding to a doll. It looks like it will be amazing when it is done though!

    57. wow.. i want to see the finishd doll o.o waiting for an update right now *-*
