Hi, everyone. Today, I was undressing my doll and I discovered some red stains on her body. I should have known better than to leave her sitting around in a dark red dress. So, yeah, I feel like a bad doll owner right now. She's been wearing the same dress for quite a while, so I'm not sure how old these stains are. I'm going to buy some magic erasers and try to remove them. I also bought a bodysuit to protect her from further staining. But what if I can't get the stains out? I've heard that sanding sometimes helps. But I don't know anything about modification and I'm afraid to ruin my doll. Do you guys have any advice for stain removal? Or advice on how to sand her down without ruining her? Maybe some body blushing could cover the stains up?
What you listed so far are the basics; start with a magic eraser, or perhaps some rubbing alcohol or other solvent, to see if you can get it out. If it comes down to needing to sand, all you'll need is a fine-grit sandpaper, then sand in small circular motions. And no worries! Staining can happen to the best of us - sometimes there's no telling what particular item of clothing will end up staining, or some random thing. :P Once I accidentally sat a doll down on my desk, and I didn't realize that I'd had an uncapped pink pen out, and I sat him down on it. x__x I picked him back up after a few days, and realized he had pink smears all over his butt and thighs. Going at it with some alcohol took most of it off, then the magic eraser took care of the rest.
If the doll is made of resin, try a magic eraser first, and if that part of the doll is unblushed, you can try 90/99% isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) too. Isopropanol will remove sealant immediately (whereas Magic Eraser, with a light touch, will not). If the doll is vinyl (Obitsu/Dollfie Dream). Start with isopropanol (acetone can shrink vinyl--it's used for this purpose to shrink doll heads) and magic eraser, and then move to acne creams with benzoyl peroxide (idealy 10%) or a special cream (forget the name) that you can buy on the volks site. The acne cream or volks cream has an expiration date, after which it becomes less effective, so remember that. Wrapping the vinyl doll in saran wrap after covering the area in cream and leaving it in the sun will help remove the stain. Sorry for the double post, but if you can tell me the fiber content (cotton, polyester, etc) of the outfit I might be able to help you fix the dye so it doesn't stain again. At the very least, washing it in a laundry detergent (you can handwash if you are worried; don't wash silk; don't machine wash wool) with sodium dodecyl sulfate/lauryl sulfate/SDS can help for most dyes.
Thank you so much for the advice! Is there anything else I need to do in regards to sanding? Like, will it scratch her up or make her resin feel rough? She's made of resin. Thanks for the tip about the rubbing alcohol! Her hands are the only part of her that's blushed, so I don't need to worry about removing her blushing. Her dress, I believe, is mostly velvet. I'm not exactly sure how to wash it. It's got some delicate, lacy bits. Any tips would be incredibly helpful!
@Hadlais here's a post about sandpaper: /posts/12027605/ Long story short, if you use too-coarse sandpaper it will leave scratches, so you would want to look for a very fine sandpaper (around 1000 or 1200 grit would be about right, I think).
@Hadlais Do you know if its polyester, cotton, rayon, or acetate velvet? Or if the lace is polyester or cotton? Does it have a washing label or can I see a picture?
I don't know. I'm sorry! It was made by @du-hast. Perhaps they can provide more information? I do have pictures, though!
To prevent future staining with that dress, it might be ideal to invest in bodysuit for the doll to wear under the dress. ^_^ I have same issue with my dolls getting stained by dark colors clothes and I make them their own body suits to use to protect their resin.
@Hadlais I'd guess it is either polyester or cotton velvet, as it isn't as shiny as most rayon/silk velvets I've seen. Unfortunately, this means that my only suggestion is the one I already provided: I would soak the dress in a bowl with a very small amount of laundry detergent (one for delicate fabrics). If you can find one of those with SDS, great. Adding others things, like vinegar or salt, is for a different type of dye for different fibers.
Hi, everyone! I just wanted to say thank you. I went out today and bought some magic erasers and rubbing alcohol. I wasn't super hopeful, since my doll's been sitting in her dress for several months now. But - suffice it to say, I now know why they're called "magic" erasers! The magic erasers took the majority of the stains off her body. And the rubbing alcohol got rid of the tougher stains. I'm so happy! She looks as good as new. Thank you all for your advice!
Before: After: Soooooooo much better! Her head and hands are off getting painted, so it was actually the perfect time to clean her.
@Hadlais Aww! You didn't need to prove it worked. (Although it'll probably be a good reference for others, so yay! ) I feel bad now--I wanted to give you an opportunity to show off a doll who's received some love (and [temporarily] received the smudges too prove it), not validate our/my dolly suggestions! If it isn't too much effort, I'd love to see her [no doubt adorable] face!
@americanseamstress I would love to - but like I said, she's off getting a new face up right now! She won't be home for a few weeks. I'm so happy that she's returning to a clean, stain-free body, though!
Any advice on how to treat a dark spot left on the forehead of my resin doll when its wig was removed? There is a bit of shine too. I don't want to risk making it worse, so should I just leave it and hide it with a wig with bangs? Thanks for any advice.
It’s a tracksuit I think it’s synthetic fibre but I don’t know I was just gonna soak it in that oxy-clean stuff and water for a while
@americanseamstress Thank you so much for clarifying that magic eraser with a light touch might not remove the blushing on a doll vs rubbing alcohol which will remove the sealant! I was about to make a huge mistake! I removed my dolls socks and discovered staining on her new blushing! Hoping it'll clean UPDATE: The magic eraser worked to remove the stain! It had been stained for a while I assume so it took some heavier scrubbing and did wipe away a bit of the body blushing. I had to scrub pretty hard for that though
