Contest Spoonflower Photography Backdrop Design Contest ~ WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Jul 30, 2013

    1. Description

This is a contest to design a one yard of fabric photo backdrop on Spoonflower in keeping with our anniversary theme, 'Deconstruction/Reconstruction'.

      Important Dates

Deadline for entries: Wednesday, August 28th, 11:59:59am Eastern Daylight Time

If you're unsure of your local time, please check this COUNTDOWN CLOCK.

      Voting period: August 29-30th

      Winner announced: Sunday, September 1st

This contest is open to all members who are in good standing who joined on or before June 30th, 2013.

      Rules

      1. Fabric designs must be uploaded to Spoonflower, so all Spoonflower terms of service apply, including copyright terms. If you have questions about their terms, ask them (not us).
      2. The design must be 100% your original creation, made specifically for this contest and reflecting the 'Deconstruction/Reconstruction' theme.
      3. The design must be for one yard of fabric, no more or less. It must be a single repeat when printed on 42in wide cotton. The entire yard should be able to serve as a photo backdrop, but the textile should have elements that would allow it to serve as a material for doll clothing as well.
      4. Design entries may not be offered for sale until the contest closes. If you later decide to offer your design for sale, please make sure that it does not violate doll manufacturers' copyrights. Describing your in-process or finished entry or posting pictures before the end of the contest and judging (whether in this thread, elsewhere on DoA or on outside blogs, forums, etc.) will result in disqualification.
      5. You may only submit one entry.

      How to Enter

      1. Join Spoonflower.
      2. Create your fabric design in the medium of your choice. Scan your design if it's non-digital.
      3. Save your file in JPG, PNG, GIF, TIF, SVG, AI or EPS format and upload it to Spoonflower. The minimum resolution should be 150dpi, but higher is better.

ยป More information about file formats and uploading.
      4. Make your design public. On the design's page, click 'Edit Status' and tick the box for 'I would like to include this design in my public gallery.' You do not need to make your design available for sale, just have it in your public gallery so mods can check your entry.
      5. Submit your entry using the form we provide. We will be asking for the following information:

    2. Should the jpg/png image be of specific size?

    3. No need for it to be a specific size, it's more important that the fabric be correctly scaled for 42in cotton. :)

    4. Thanks for the answer! My Spoonflower image is correct size but the png I submitted was smaller preview size. Is this alright? :?

    5. It's fine! Thank you so much for your entry! :)

    6. Great to hear! Thank you for organizing the contests! : )

    7. PinkBear and I created a couple of design examples (hers is much prettier than mine).

      Damask by PinkBear

      Gothic Arches by St. James
Technically the photo resolution is too low for this, but it was just to illustrate that photos could be incorporated into a backdrop as well.

    8. Hello mods, thanks for flagging the photo suggestion, and the lovely examples!
Sorry if this is a foolish question, but I'm trying to figure the balance between backdrop-ness and fabric-ness required for this challenge - should the one yard be viewed as part of a bolt of cloth, so that if e.g. someone wanted to buy two or three yards, they would flow seamlessly together (as with the damask example) or as a standalone yard with no need to match up at the top / bottom (e.g. like the gothic arches)?
Hope that makes some kind of sense... And thanks for flagging Spoonflower, had never come across it before, but it looks fab!

    9. No need for it to be seamless. :)

    10. So the design must be a single repeat when printed on 42in wide cotton...But can I actually use this 42in width as height of my design?

    11. Yes, your design can be oriented in either direction. :)

    12. Thanks St. James - I think I understand, or at least have given it a go, and learned something new in the process! :)
