So I'm biting the bullet and my first doll I'm planning is going to be a Splatoon doll. A lot of people make OCs or their player character but I really wanna make a splatbands character instead. But I don't know what to do about his hair. Styling a wig is one option, but if you've seen Splatoon characters they don't really have traditional hair. I was thinking of sculpting the hair, however I'm not sure how I'm going to get the sculpt off of the doll and into the oven without hurting the doll or bending the sculpt. I also don't know how it's going to stay on the doll or if it will be too heavy for the doll.
You can try with Crayola Model Magic, it's light kind if foam-like, air-dry clay. If you are in the USA, you can get small packages of the clay for under 2usd at Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart. It comes in various colors, and it's pretty light weight. It can be a bit fragile depending on thickness, and does shrink a bit while it dries -- which can take days, again depending on thickness. However, it is inexpensive, comes in white and other colors, it can be easily sanded, painted and is light weight. I have used it for masks, and random props. I would recommend for hair, as it is not hard when completely dry/cured. It's more foam-lije, which minimizes the damage it can leave behind. You can use plastic wrap in between the resin and clay, to prevent the clay from sticking or leaving residues. You can do the same with other clays, but if you go with something like an epoxy two parts clay, it might scratch the resin and will be heavier. You could reduce the waste of clay and make it lighter by adding aluminium foil to fill in the bulk of the hair, but it there will always be the risk of friction damaging/ scratching the resin. Hope that helps, good luck!
There's someone who has made silicone wigs, so they're actually rubbery and moveable like I imagine inklings hair would be. I have no idea how they do it but that would be awesome. (FaeWoodsDolls on Instagram)
If you wanted it to be a softer material, you could probably get somewhere with brushed out yarn, since it stays in place pretty well
I like both of these ideas! I still need to do some budgeting so I'll look into the silicone wigs and getting into touch. But I won't rule out model magic if the wig can't be done for whatever reason.
