So recently I passed by a road named Sprider Lily and it immediately made me think that I wanted to have one of my own. So here I am making a spider centaur (not really sure what that’s called) named Lily. I skipped over the drawing portion because every time I make one of those plans I wind up never using it or causing a whole bunch of problems for myself trying to keep to it. This time I’ve decided to wing it and hope for the best. So far I’ve made two attempts at getting the head right. The first was okay, but other than the eyes the proportions were all wrong. Spider Lily Head So I removed the ears nose and mouth and extended the forehead and chin by a little. Now I'm just waiting for it to cure so I can take a Dremel to it and try to smooth out some things so she doesn't look so bloated. Spider Lily Front Head 68029807355__751CAC79-1631-4AF9-83FF-40CCD46B66AE My sister says she looks like an MSD head (I don't have enough BJDs to know for sure myself), but we'll just have to wait and see how it goes. I'm consider working on the body a bit tomorrow while I wait for the head to finish curing.
So Lily cured up and I've been working on carving her out with the Dremel. Unfortunately, I was mistaken about the size of doll she's going to be. I had originally believed she was going to be MSD sized, but now I'm pretty sure she's actually YoSD. And because of that I have the wrong size eyes for her. I tried 14 mm, and 12 mm eyes (both of which were way too big) I also have a pair of wooden beads that are about 10mm, but unfortunately those two fight for placement in the two sockets. So, I've ordered a new set of eyes (cheap since I only plan to use them for sculpting purposes), and now I just have to wait for them to come in. Instead I've decided that I can start working on the body. Unfortunately (once again) I've discovered that I can't just go into this blind like I had hoped, so I drew up a plan. It's still very rough and more than likely I'll wind up straying from it a bit anyway, but at least it's a starting place.
I'm sorry, but I'm not really sure how to answer you because I'm not really sure what you're asking. Are you asking how I plan to sculpt the joints? Because in that case I haven't really thought that far ahead yet. I'll probably wind up sculpting them as a whole and then cutting them up to add joints, but I'll probably wind up experimenting on how to do that and have it keep It's correct position Or are you asking about how I plan to string the legs? In that case I'm hoping to string them like the arms would be strung. Maybe I'll have some sort of hook at the bottom to hopefully keep the angle of the elastic correct for how she's supposed to stand. Or are you asking something different?
Sorry, I could have worded that better. I am mostly curious about the joints. It's always interesting to see how people solve the issues around unconventional joints and the types of animal and/or fantasy legs that needs to carry the dolls weight while being in mid bend are perhaps among the trickiest to get right, so I am always on the look out for different solutions. Seeing how different people approaches the whole process is fascinationg too. Working without a set plan is something I've done as well and it's quite different from when having a detailed plan. Even more so when it's a fantasy creature. I will keep an eye on this project. Thank you for sharing!
Hey, I’m Fae’s sister and also going to be sculpting a spider bjd, but in MSD size. (I just don’t have any progress yet, so I don’t have a post up) If you’ve ever seen Pluto by Doll Chateau, we’re planning on using her legs as reference to figure out the joints for our spiders. They really did an awesome job on fantasy legs that pose well and hold up the weight of the doll.
