OK, so this is just a bit of a random rant. But does anyone else find female stomach really difficult to sculpt?!! It's so frustrating, I mean of all the things (!) this is where I really seriously got stuck for no apparent reason whatsoever!!:dead This is the last major thing I need to fix before moving on to fine tuning the details, and it's been a no go for days. It's either too big or too flat in all the wrong places, and I'm aiming for something in the middle. Just a kind of soft female stomach (with some definition though), not rubenesque or sporty or too modelly. I'm sick of adding clay, only to subtract it a few hours later! I noticed that when sometimes a details looks a bit off, it's not a problem with the actual detail, but rather with something around that particular detail. But for the life of me I can't catch what this is... P.S. I can't post any WIP photos for a proper critique, as my camera isn't working right now (which doesn't help my mood :pout). But any general ideas? SOS please.
Have you looked at any books by Bruno Lucchesi? Sounds like you might find some of his books helpful. I have a copy of"Modeling the Figure with Clay" by him.
Thanks for your recommendation Switchum. I have been looking at anatomy books, internet and I've done a lot of staring into the mirror, perhaps you are right and I need to get something with "manual instructions". How did you learn to sculpt? Your work is like a perfect replica of a real human :-)
Hi Nia2010, I can also recommend some modeling sites for artists, like this one (Warning: Nudity) They have all kinds of body shapes and you can rotate the model so it is pretty useful especially if you get a paid membership. Many artists use this site as reference. Also there are photographers who like to post reference pictures of models, like this guy. All he asks is to give credit to the models he used if you use his photo works as reference. Hope that helps. You can also use yourself or friends as models if you can't find what you are looking for in books and internet. Sometimes it is quicker and better. Oh hey, thanks for the compliment. I started out modifying 1/35 scale military figures with epoxy putty. And did a lot of figurative sculptures with ceramics while I was in college.
