Soot Stains

Sep 22, 2021

    1. I'm entirely new to the BJD community and my first doll was one I found on eBay for like... 30 bucks. Not the best doll but she's adorable and I love her.

I recently had a jar candle lit that someone got for me and realized way too late (read: end of the candle) that it was covering pretty much EVERYTHING with a nice layer of soot. I know I have to hand-wash her dress and bunny ears but I'm scared to wash her face and hair. She's not the best quality and I don't want to accidentally ruin her. Is Dawn dish soap or like.. baby shampoo safe to use on her?

edit: I found the eBay listing I purchased the doll from, paid 70, not 30. She is more hinge jointed- especially at the wrist-, is 1/3 scale, and material is not listed. I can't actually open the order details anymore. Also listed as Unbranded, so I'm not sure if she's a recast from another doll tbh. I'm trying to figure out how to attach a picture... but I have NO INTENTION OF TRYING TO SELL HER JUST WANT TO CLEAN HER! Please don't kick me out!

    2. Hum, I recently cleaned an old bjd with ear swabs and a product from Woolite; pet stain & odor remover. It's great for fabric, and did a fine job, gently and quickly applied, then removed with the dry side of the swab. I was surprised how much unseen dirt it removed, and I constantly checked for paint removal, there was none, after repeated applications! Still, go gently. My old doll may have had a particularly good sealant? But yeah, good results!

    3. For the wig you can use human hair conditioner, the cheaper the better. The fancier conditioners have natural oils that are not the best for resin and will just sit on top of the plastic fibers and get on your doll. If the wig is made of natural fibers it will absorb those oils to a point and it's okay to use the fancier stuff on them.
A few gentle swishes in a bowl of diluted conditioner and rinse out a couple times before your press the water out and let dry fully before putting back on your doll. For the face it's good to test on a place that doesn't show much first. Good luck!

    4. You may want to make sure this is a resin bjd you have first. I noticed you're a new user and a newbie to the hobby. There are many doll companies that fall into some bjd circles these days but are not (they're hinge jointed) and those are most commonly made from PVC or vinyl. This would be dolls like Obitsu or Pullip. Or there are a few inexpensive bjd that are technically strung but made of PVC such as Pang Ju, Ai dolls, or Hujoo. Seeing as how you got your first doll for such an inexpensive price, it leads me to believe you're referring to a PVC doll which would most likely require a different cleaning technique. Just a suggestion!

    5. I agree with @Cap'n about figuring out what your dolls is made out of and then proceeding with the recommended suggestions for how to clean your doll. Do you mind providing the company and possible sculpt of the doll? It would help, especially if we could even pin point even the year as some companies might have been experimenting with their resins or jointing, and seasoned BJD owners that own similar dolls might know the dos and don'ts for your particular doll. If you don't know the company or sculpt or even don't feel comfortable sharing what your doll is, that's fine.

Look up restoration projects on DoA as there are many exceptional people on this forum that have rescued secondhand dollies and have documented well their journeys to cleaning and fixing their dolls. They have very valuable dos and don'ts, mainly from trial and error and experience, so that might also make it easier on you.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is fine for most dolls except never use it on a face-up or else it'll erase it off. Test in an area (like in a joint) to make sure it doesn't remove skin tone just in case your doll was airbrushed to be a certain skin tone as opposed to the resin or PVC or vinyl being that color through and through. Be aware that using the eraser might remove any sealants so take that into consideration if you are planning to wash then erase stains and be prepared to reseal properly with PPEs and in a location that isn't inhabited by small animals or children or where food is prepared or eaten at. Also, don't go too crazy with the eraser as it might end up sanding more than erasing if the stains get in too deep from the candle.

Whatever you do, good luck and hopefully your doll is fine for future adventures!

    6. @Kesshoukun All dolls discussed on the forum must be On Topic. Off Topic dolls can only be discussed in Brigadoon.

On Topic polyurethane resin dolls are not usually found on Ebay for $30, so it raises a few red flags. The only On Topic vinyl dolls are Dollfie Dream and Obitsu in sizes 47cm, 50cm, 55cm and 60cm and a few doll lines that use the Obitsu body or internal skeleton.

What type of doll do you have?

    7. Thank you! I'll have to try the woolite. I found the listing from eBay from 2019. Unbranded 1/3 scale doll. Bought it for 70.

    8. Thank you so much! I'm used to high quality fibers for 'wigmancing' for cosplay. Wouldn't have thought to swish in diluted conditioner. That's a great idea! 2-in-1 is the cheapest thing I can think of in the way of hair care lol

    9. I think she's resin, listing doesn't actually say so PVC is highly plausible... I found the order from eBay- 70 not 30. 1/3 scale. I'm going to try and see if I can attach pictures of her. The listing does say unbranded so I'm hoping that doesn't end up flagging the post... I don't have any intention of selling her. I know the rules about that lol. Especially since it's possible the company recast from another doll.. Again, first doll and completely new to it. Didn't even know recasting was a thing! She was completely assembled, painted, and dressed when I got her. Didn't even come in a box...

    10. I found the eBay listing and it's... really vague. Thinking about it and looking at what details I can actually get from it (purchase was for 70 in 2019 so eBay won't open the item details anymore...) it's highly likely she might be a recast... "BJD Doll 1/3 Ball Jointed Girl Dolls Free Face Wig Clothes Makeup Toy FULL SET" is the listing title. And it looks like they may have altered the images. Since starting my reply I have been able to hunt down screenshots of the listing and images for the doll they used to the person that referred me to this site. Material says resin but then notes just says "body part is hard material, it is made in good quality".

But thank you so much for your direction! I'll just be happy to see her clean again TTnTT

    11. I did find the eBay listing screenshots I had sent to the person that actually referred me here when I first got her. It's... really sketchy looking back on it. I paid 70 for her from China, fully painted, assembled, and dressed. Didn't come in a box, either. Kind of pretzel twisted into the plastic bag packaging. The details say she's resin, and DOES have Dollfie listed in the categories, but the brand is listed as unbranded. Not entirely sure what's going on with her... I'm just hoping that I don't get kicked off now because of the growing possibility she's a recast...

    12. @Kesshoukun .
From all you've said, do not post a pic here. She sounds like a recast to me. Boo-hoo. Start a Flickr account, since you'll need one anyway to post photos on DoA. You can show off your doll, styling, photography there. But the rules are deafening clear on DoA. No recasts, even by accident.

    13. Aye aye! I don't want to support that kind of practice. Especially not since I know about it, now. And I REALLY don't want to get kicked from the forum for my ignorance. I've been looking into getting another doll now that I have a better salary and can afford to not be picky about cost, really. So I'm looking into the companies and artists that make and sell quality dolls. I want to really get into this hobby and community and support the right people. I don't think I'll ever be able to paint my own dolls, though. I'm a cosplay-seamstress, not an artist lol

    14. @Kesshoukun
If the doll you're referring to is the same one as on your profile picture, then it's a hinge jointed doll made of PVC or ABS. So it's either off topic and should be discussed in the brigadoon section or it could very well be one of the banned ABS dolls. Dream Fairy, Fortune Days, and Eva BJD are all banned due to being recasts.

    15. I have several of her type. She's not a recast, she IS an ABS, which are not allowed on this forum. May I direct you to the smaller Dollieh Sanctuary • Index page where all dolls are welcome?

FYI, the doll in my avatar is not an ABS doll. She's an older Dollzone.

    16. @Kesshoukun As it appears the doll you have is Off Topic, I have moved your thread to Brigadoon.

    17. Thank you! I'm still learning the forum.
