Soom Syen Restoration - UPDATES 2/20

Feb 9, 2011

    1. Hey again you guys! I've been trying to stop buying dolls but my dorm has apparently become The Lacy Rose's Home for Broken and Damaged Dollies and I've been buying up all the ones I see. I recently purchased a modded and damaged Soom Syen hybrid on the marketplace and I plan to restore her. Here's what she looked like before I worked on her a bit tonight.
She was dyed, her face was all scratched up, two of her fingers were chopped off, and her ear was...well, you can see in the photos:sigh. One of her eyes was opened too so I'll be opening the other one to match. If you cover the right half of her face she's actually really cute but she needs a lot of work. I'll also be removing her fangs but that's just a personal preference.

The person I got her from had dyed her right half brownish red (yeah, only half) and had sanded away most of the dye but one of her feet and calf pieces still needs to be sanded. Obviously I'll be taking care of that too and finishing up the sanding job on the other pieces.

Here's what I got after sanding my butt off for a couple hours.
I'm really worried about her ear and that it won't look good once I rebuild it. I'm not resorting to taking it off yet but it might not look great once it's done. As for the scratches on the face, I'll be filling those in with epoxy since it's a lot easier than sanding and she'll need to have her head airbrushed anyway because of her ear.

    2. Oh my gosh. Looks like you've got your work cut out for you (...uh...no pun intended XD). I can't wait to see what you're able to do with her.

    3. Yeah it's definitely going to be a long road toward recovery with her. I won't be doing any fantasy mods or anything, just making her look like a (kinda) normal little girl.

    4. Yikes, looks like she's going to need a lot of work, though I can't wait to see what you do with her :)

    5. I love your mods! I can't wait to see what you do with her <3

    6. Good luck with her, looks like she has wound up in a good place, I wish you a lot of luck and also fun in restoring her and making her beautiful again

    7. Aww, poor little Hellraiser refugee! O__o
I think you'll be able to rebuild that ear. Epoxy in all the gaps, maybe in a couple of layers, and then do a little sanding to get the curl back into the top. At least there are enough points left for it to have some structural integrity.

    8. :( Poor little doll. Looks like she was dragged behind a bus, Napoleon Dynamite style. (not to mention she had her head clipped on!) But you've done wonders with messed up dolls so I am sure you'll end up making little Oleander beautiful again. :kitty2 Mend her quickly and I shall watch for updates!

    9. O.O I still cant get over the ear! Good luck with restoring her, I hope she comes out looking like new

    10. goodness, that's quite a job! i'm sure you can bring her back to glory, though.

    11. Ugh... people who do stuff like this ought to be banned from modding. It's one thing to mod a doll, but it's another thing to intentionally ruin the poor thing.

I hope you manage to give her the love she so well deserves!

    12. Poor little dolly! But I've seen your other mods and you do great work - I have faith that you can get her restored to her beautiful self! Good luck to you! :)

    13. Thanks everyone! I appreciate your comments and enthusiasm! I'll try and work on her some more tonight if I get my homework done.

@St. James - After looking over the ear more I agree with you and I should be able to fix it. I tend to wildly over-exaggerate any modding problems in my mind so they all come out sounding horrible.

    14. omg, that poor poor doll! D: I can't wait to see what you do with her, although it looks like it will be quite a bit of work ^_^;;

    15. Awwwwww, you got this little one, I'm so glad!!! Will you bring her to the meet I want a look at that ear.

    16. Sure, I'll bring her along. I'm still debating whether to bring all my kiddes as usual or only a few. They're still multiplying...

    17. I dont agree with most of the 'poor dolly' comments. It actually looks like quite a quirky little gore mod that they've done on it, of course it's all personal taste and I dont think the faceup or dyeing was expertly done. Anyway, it is nice to know that with the help of people like you mods are reversable and I wish you luck with it.

    18. Awesome! I think she found her way to the perfect person to restore her even if your dorm room is becoming overrun. I also feel her mods were interesting before, but very taste/character specific. Now that she's re-homed, it'll be neat to see her take on a new persona all together. Best of luck restoring her! If you can't fix her ear perfectly, I'm sure you can find someway to make it work, like maybe a cyborg or fantasy style.

    19. I find it terribly exciting when I spy threads like this one! I of course love seeing fantasy mods, but what I love even more is seeing a doll that has had better days return to a pretty doll. :) I'm looking forward to your progress!

    20. I think the reason that people are saying "poor dolly" is because they don't think the mods were expertly done. Obviously what anybody does to their dolls (faceups, clothes, mods, dyeing, etc) is personal taste- it's because mods like this are so much harder to fix when done badly (unlike something like a faceup, which is easily wiped) that people are sympathizing with the doll that got hacked up.

Poor dolly indeed, but at least she is now in capable hands! I also am really excited to see what she'll look like once fixed up.

    21. Just to be clear... None of what was done to this doll is reversible. None of it. It is fixable, yes, but that's TOTALLY different. It's like if your tire has a blowout. That's not reversible, but you can fix it by replacing the tire.

That said, I can't wait to see how you fix the doll up. I have great hope for seeing this doll made beautiful.

    22. I think Suuchan is totally right, this doll is fixable but the mods are not reversible.

I finished sanding her leg and opened her eye. It's not totally perfect, I still need to bevel it and finish it up but I think I got them pretty even.

    23. Awwwwwwww! Kind of reminds me a little of my Appini!

    24. She looks great now! I remember seeing her on the MP~ Can't wait to see what you do with her! Will you be keeping her?

Maybe it's just my screen, but one eyes still looks a bit wider than the other...?

      • x 1
    25. Thanks you guys! I'll definitely be keeping this little one. Her name is Oleander as PenguinCheese said.

And the eyes are probably a little uneven but once I bevel them I'll be able to even them out more. She'll probably end up taking 16mm eyes, maybe even 18 but I doubt it

    26. Ohhh~ She's gonna look so cute! I can't wait to see what you do with her~

    27. Right now, she's got like...a sad little Edward Scissorhands girl thing going on, probably because of the mournful look and scarred face. But I think the uneven looking eyes are just because one isn't beveled yet, they're actually the same size. :) She's looking lovely!

    28. I love her opened eyes! She's gonna be so cute when you're done with her! Can't wait to see the final product!

    29. She definitely looks much better with both eyes now opened about the same shape. :)

    30. What I cannot fathom is anyone doing this to a Soom. They are sooooo expensive! She is clearly in good hands now.

    31. I really don't think the face mods were that bad. Obviously I think The Lacy Rose is going to make her look fabulous when she's done, but I can see what the original owner wanted her to be. It was a specific character they had in mind and well, it didn't work out in the end. And it was their doll to do with what they would when they owned them.

I think she is looking great now. Keep up the good work!

    32. That was my reaction too. The dye job didn't look great, but the ear and eye mods didn't look bad (at least not in the pictures). Clearly not to everyone's personal taste, but not poorly done. I too am interested to see what she will look like finished, though -- it's neat seeing someone take a doll and go in a totally different direction with it. It goes to show just how much is possible with bjds :)

    33. hmm...i am also not thinking the ear and eyemod was bad done.... special concept but not bad*lol*
i like gore mods very much!
      ANYWAY
i am sure you will make a cute little girl out of her, much of luck and fun for your project!!!

    34. oh wow. Nice to spot this thread. I had seen this doll in the market place, and to think you are going to restore it is exciting. I can't wait to see the final piece. Good luck!

    35. I'd be curious to know/see what the previous owner was trying to do (knowing the character story)

she's super cute with huge eyes like that :D
gonna keep an eye on this thread.

    36. Good luck with this project. I'm sure Syen will be pleased with what you do.

    37. I'm surprised you chose to open the eye rather than close the other one. I wouldn't have thought of that - I would have taken it back to the Soom eye.

I think it's wonderful that you opened the right eye, though. With big eyes like that she's going to be absolutely adorable, ^_^

    38. For all saying poor dolly...it was mine...and It dd look better before I sanded all her color off...then I sold it to rose...

I can't wait to see what u do to her!

I feel bad misstreeting her...I hope u can fix her!

Fr those curious this it what "he" used to look like...

    39. I wouldn't say you mistreated her/him, you were trying to create your character. Its all personal taste, some people think you destroyed it, some people think it was cool and you should have kept it, and some think this is a good chance to see a new dollie come out of an old shell. Don't feel bad!

    40. hi
never feel bad about creative work ^^
i liked your dolly in the "old form" very much and i am sure he will be now a different person but also a great looking dolly
      STAY CREATIVE ^^
      hugs

    41. I think you've done a great job so far, The Lace Rose. I'm curious as to what size eyes the Syen will take now? It's always easier to close the eyes, but you have to have the right additional material. I think you're on the right track so far and I can't wait to see what the finished doll looks like.

    42. I don't think anybody's comments about the state of this doll were meant to be personal. I'm glad you had fun modding her and making her your character, but the things you did to this doll to create your character were mostly very permanent and irreversible. When mods are done in such a way that someone else needs to go in and repair/restore the doll after you sell it, that's what inspires "poor dolly" comments. A mod that is well executed and requires no further work would probably not get such comments.

    43. Any kind of heavy duty modding is going to take a lot of work to undo -- that's the nature of mods. The more the type of mod falls into the category of acquired taste (where a lot of horror mods seem to fall no matter how well done), the more likely it is the next owner will want to make changes. A horror mod is only going to inspire the new owner to keep as is or continue making changes along the same lines (using the original mods as a starting point rather than totally redoing) if the new owner actually wants a horror mod. So I don't think that it follows to say it's a bad mod job if the next owner wants to change it and/or it will take a lot of work to take the doll in a new direction. I can understand why horror mods sometimes receive 'poor dolly' comments, however, often it seems to be more a reaction to the type of mod rather than the actual execution. How much more work a mod does or doesn't need can be influenced by personal preference as well. IMO, the old owner has nothing to apologize for.

    44. Yea, I'm probably not going to be the most liked person for saying this.

When executed properly, I love a good gore mod. It takes a mold and changes it into something truly unique, and can bring out a different side of the scupt. If that's what Vince was trying to do, they should have put more time and care into it. Had they done so, then I don't doubt that this would have been a very nice looking little gore baby. However... hacking up a doll and tossing it in dye does not a good gore mod make. Gore mods take much more time and effort than other mods because it is such a niche market, so it has to be well done to receive anything more than 'ewwww a gore mod, poor dolly'.

Given this, I'm positive Lacy can repair this doll. I've followed her work before, and she always does a wonderful job.

To Summarize: I am not trying to bash anyone, I am simply stating that gore mods require lots of work, and can't be done sloppily to be effective.

    45. Hey guys! Just a reminder that this is a modding thread because it seems to be veering off topic a bit. If you want to debate good mods vs. bad mods I'm sure there's a thread about it somewhere in the debate subforum!

Anyway, Syen's ear has been patched up! All she really needs now is airbrushing but I have no time to sit down and do that right now. Maybe tonight.

It needs to be sanded a little more but it's not as rough as it looks in the photos. The Super Macro setting on my camera picks up EVERY. SINGLE. DETAIL.

    46. AWESOME JOB LACY! I can't wait to see more!

    47. Ain't that the truth! It was pictures that showed me I needed to smooth Danica's eye patch job a lot more.

You're doing a great job, Lacy! I envy you your airbrush skills-that's something I need to learn.

I too am a sucker for damaged dollies.

    48. She's looking great! Now she's got even more the the Edward Scissorhands thing going on because all her gouges now look like pale, healed scars. I'm dying to see her airbrushed. <3

    49. Omg she has an ear! Amazing how did you do that?

    50. Really amazing progress! :D
I'll be waiting for more updates!!

    51. Wow, you fixed her up but good! The ear was scary before but you did a good job in fixing it!

    52. Wow you'r so cool :D

    53. Oh wow! :D I've been following this thread and fearing for this doll but it looks like everything will be fine. That ear was so cringe-worthy before. I'm so glad you were able to fix it.

I can't wait to see this doll complete. I'm going to subscribe and keep on it. Good luck with all your hard work. :D

    54. i like what you have done with her :) the eye shape makes her really cute, and the ear repair looks nice. i am looking forward to see how she will end up looking

    55. Nicely done. Your work on restoring the poor little thing is nothing short of superb. Will watch for more updates.

    56. Ah yes i remember seeing this little one on market, I shall definately be following your work on restoring her. Lots of luck and beautiful work so far, the ear looks wonderful so do the eyes!

    57. I do like the before, too. Mods always just come down to personal taste.

    58. I agree. I certainly don't think anyone should apologize for making their doll meet their vision.

    59. It must be fun to have such a project to undertake. While paiting and modding regular dolls can be so much fun, I imagine in these cases you can really see a transformation. It looks really good so far, cant wait to see more updates!

    60. I finally snuck in some time to airbrush Oleander! It only took a minute since it was just her head and torso. What do you guys think?
There's a little place in her ear that the paint didn't get to but it's not too noticeable. That little brown bit on her earlobe is just part of her wig.

Her lips need a little more sanding. That's not too big of a problem since I figured out that I could sand dolls lightly with the airbrushing intact and just airbrush over the sanded patch again. I'll post more updates once her hands get here and I airbrush them.
