Soom Super Gem Discussion (Basic, Limited & Special Order) - Part 8

Apr 15, 2015

1. You know you can simply not chose the extra joint and the legs then have EXACTLY the same number and apprearance of joints as on the old body?
<.<
And the joint under their bust is in my opionion just perfect because it blends into the body without being noticable as joint at all?
I think the new bodies (both male and female) are optimized in case of hiding joints.
You can't see the wrist gap for the s hooks on the new body ... on old body you could.
The new body hides the joint gaps in the shoulder and the hip too.
I can not (and I do not) argue about the posability but with hiding the strings and joints it is new > old body ... sorry.
Quite another thing is the neck size, because this is noticable but depends on the specificc headsculpt a lot .. AND personal preference.

2. Seems like you feel the same way about Beryl as I feel about Cuprit, hahah :D I already have two, but I'm still hoping that Soom would release her in gray skin too, so I could get a third one... I always love it that people are able to get their grails, so congrats! โ™ฅ

Iyalisai looks breath-taking, love her styling~ Would love to see a group picture of all three Beryls once you get this gray version home too :3

Have you seen these? There is one picture of the "simple type" new body which doesn't have the extra joints on the thighs :) I'm not a big fan of thigh joints either, even if they'd make the posing easier and more natural I always go for simple joints, since I prefer the aesthetics more.

***

Since it was requested, I have a comparison picture of my two Cuprits (NS in old body, bronze in new body) :) Gwyn (the bronze one) is standing on a book to get her on the same level with Melanthe (NS) for easier comparing, so this doesn't show the accurate difference in height, just how the heads look on the two bodies. Sorry that this isn't the best photo quality-wise, I've been quite busy and wasn't able to take photos in proper natural light :/ Hope it's still useful!

(This reminds me that I really need to re-do Mel's faceup, her eyebrows are so horrible ^^;; )

I also took a photo from the side. I really don't think that the head looks too big on the new body or the neck too short :3

3. Safir, thank you for those. ^^ That's really helpful.

I was writing a really long comment just now but after that comparison... scratch all of that. Thanks to that photo I finally figured what it is about the new body that bothers me the most: it's the fact that the shoulders look tense. The old body's shoulders come down nicely in a relaxed manner while the new body looks stiff. I think that's also what makes the whole shoulder area look squished and the older heads look iffy and too big on the new body to me personally. I don't like large headed dolls in general, not just these Sooms. (I noticed this exact same thing with my new and old Zenith girl bodies, ugh.)

Was it Snow White that many people said had a really small head? I really liked that one because the head was so small, so it's no wonder I don't like these old, larger heads on the new body.

I'm with Luchan on the new body. I really dislike it a lot. My biggest issue with it isn't the jointing, however, but the fact that she has no hips that can compare to the old body. All her shapes seem... flat, right down to the hands. I also prefer the look of the old jointing; the knees, the hands, the thighs... and what I especially prefer is the waist joint (but that's not a surprise to anyone). Then, once I get past the look of the new body, there comes the construction: the elbow joints that need to be pulled out, the placing of the torso joint and the fact that her legs are strung separately from the rest of her body... None of that is for me, I handle my dolls in a way that just does not work with any of those jointing choices.

The new body is actually the reason my wallet has now been safe from Soom for a few years now and I've moved on to other companies. I really love my old Sooms but with them only releasing the new body, I just have no interest in their new dolls. Which is good for my finances, lol.

4. Safir, think you for the comparison! I think the picture with both bodies with the same head allows a better comparison of the bodies. I find the new body more natural and I really like the shorter neck.

5. fishcake Thank you. Iyalisai is probably my favorite doll that I own, though my Idealian Elloa is creeping up to tie that place even without a face up yet.

I really love the aesthetic of the new bodies. While I do enjoy the shape of certain things on the old body (the wasp waist, the knee shape and let shape) I personally love the hidden joint under the busy and the shoulders. To me they don't feel tense but squared off and proud, which fits Beryl's attitude very well. The new body feels very proportionate in build, which has its own appeal. I enjoy both bodies but lean way more on the new one. It poses so much better for me, too.
safir I totally thought I'd only ever have the original release (who took me a long while to get my hands on no less, and in pieces). But I was smitten with the dark tan and have always day dreamed of a gray version. I can't wait to see them all side by side. I have to figure out a color palette for her though.

Thank you for the compliments on Iyalisai. I'm awful about sharing my girls. ><; I need to do some photos with them, though I'm waiting for a less humid day to redo the mendhi on her hands and feet.

I'll definitely get a photo with them all together though! Please do the same if they release your gray Cuprit too! Though you always have gorgeous photos. <3

6. Everyone's dolls look so pretty!

I hadn't realized the new body had such a short neck, and, as Yenna pointed out, it does look tense! While I prefer joints just under the bustline (personal preference) that neck is not for me. All of my girls at home have long, long necks and someone on the new body would look... out of place, a bit. I guess this helps keep me safe?

7. So nice to see Sonja--and she knits a lot--my head canon is that all those amazing scarves on everyone there come off her needles :D

8. Photostory canon too! ;) Sonja's the knitter in the house and she's trying to teach Jolene (ot for this thread) Sirocco can't be bothered with that sort of stuff but Hawley would probably really like it - if she ever approached Sonja to learn

9. Sirocco's latest outfit is drop-dead gorgeous, by the way! Does she ever wear her wings or do they interfere with clothes?

10. @liselT Very beautiful oriental girl. Like her dress.

11. Thank you for all the comparison pictures. The Dark Moon Beryls are gorgeous. The last Soom SG I had was Amber and I found out that hooves weren't for me plus, I didn't care for the breast jointing on the old body. But I think I'd be fine with the new body just like I like the new Souldoll Zenith ones.

Can anyone take a picture of one of their SG girls with an Idealian male? I've got a Zak coming and I'm hoping this new Beryl would look good with him.

12. Espiransa - Thank you very much. <3 She's one of my treasures~

Clothed or unclothed, Patrice S ? ^^ I have my Dark Moon Beryl and an Idealian Dover I could get a photo or two of, though it might take some time since their outfits are both pretty dang involved to get on and off. @.@;

13. Thanks so much LiselT. Clothed is just fine.

14. I can't tell what color this Beryl is really; is she grayish green or grayish purple or the basic gray. At one point I started seeing her as if it was just normal skin but looked dark in the photo *_*

15. I really like SG girls with Idealian males :3 Unfortunately my girl is wearing a winter coat in this picture, but hopefully you can still get an idea of the size difference and how the two sizes look together! I think Gwyn was wearing high heels as well, so bare feet or in flat shoes she'd be a little bit shorter.

Compared to the "old" Grey skin, Smoky grey is a bit warmer shade of grey and has a purple-ish tint to it :) The bodyblushing and faceup make the skin look quite brown-ish in the promo pictures. This is how smoky grey looks in natural light, though Soom's known to be inconsistent with their resin colors so there's no telling if this Beryl will look exactly the same as the earlier dolls of same color ^^;

16. Soom makes those LE eyes so lovely, wish they would sell them separately. I could use that wig they have for the new Beryl, but it looks like a huge up keep if I get it.

17. Thanks Safir. Height wise they'd be fine together. That coat is just stunning and I can't imagine her wanting to take it off.

18. Smokey Grey is definitely a warm grey where regular Grey is a cool grey. I don't know if Smokey Grey has changed much since it's first use for Smokey himself, but here is my Smokey next to the legs (LOL he's so tiny) of my regular Grey FCE Breccia and Benmore.

19. safir What a wonderful couple, they look great together!

20. Here's one skintone comparison of grey (Hyperon), Smokey grey (Sweet Witch) and aged pearl Pearl violet (Vesuvia) in warm natural morning light :) I agree that the standard grey is cold and has more blue-ish tone, smokey has purple-ish "rosy" and warm tone, it looks gorgeous! Vesuvia skintone is lighter but I added it here because I think it's grey-ish and all those skintones would make a perfect doll family together if you like haha! :D

I'm looking forward to see their other old MD women releases, I already started to save money just in case they release other girls in any grey-ish skintone or any kind of body because I simply like them all even though I prefer new body.. I'm also one of those who have asked for girls instead of boys all the time, so now I must keep my eyes open even though I'm not so fanatically Soomed anymore. But I was super happy to see Beryl even though she's not my type. Can't wait to see more!!! :...(

21. Adalwolf thank you ! It's nice to see the grays all together, and Safir's pretty girl. cowpewter I hadn't realized how little Smokey was! :D

22. Didn't wind up winning any of the Dolpa lotteries, so I'm back to ogle Beryl ;)

I really, really wish they would put up a picture of how the hooves look on the new body. I haven't been a fan of the fantasy feet and hooves they've used for some recent releases, and I don't trust them not to make changes to how the legs/feet *work* (i.e., the difference between the jointing of Chrom's feet and Wolf the Knight's feet.)

I'd feel differently if they promised that there would be no jointing or appearance changes to the hoof legs, other than to the top of the thigh area.

They're really asking us to buy "a pig in a poke" here (for the non-Americans, that's buying something without knowing what you're getting), which is very frustrating.

If they've already made a prototype of the hooves on the new body (even if it's not the right color), I'd want to see it before buying. And if they *haven't* even prototyped the doll yet, why are they selling her?

They really should have the finished product ready to photograph, before putting her up for sale -- and if they changed their mind about offering new vs. old body, it would make sense to *pull the sale period* until they had an accurate doll prototype to photograph for their customers.

I'm really torn -- I don't have an issue with the new body, but I don't want them to change anything about the Beryl legs and hooves (other than the thigh attachment), and I don't feel like I have any confidence that I'd be getting what I was hoping for, when the final product arrives.

-- A :/

23. Exactly this. I don't think they have done them yet because they weren't selling the new body with fantasy parts originally and then just switched things up. And if indeed they're selling something they haven't even made yet... well that sucks. They haven't been answering the Q&A board since last week either, so no answers to that.

I think there's a reason all the new fantasy feet have had different jointing and they're all re-made. I doubt the new body can balance well on the old legs as is. Their string goes from foot to foot and the old fantasy legs bend a lot backwards, which I would imagine, makes the new body very front-heavy (and the string at the hip doesn't give much support because it doesn't go up). From what I've seen, all the new fantasy feet have seemed straighter or otherwise different, but can't be sure because I've just been looking at photos. I just don't think they're compatible in any way -even if the knees were modded, so they have to remake them entirely. Just my guesswork though. Definitely wouldn't feel comfortable buying those parts before there are photos, because I wouldn't change _anything_ in them if I had my way. I love the Beryl hooves as they are, so the fact that they say that the hoof part will be transparent resin really puts up red flags for me.

24. The pictures of the hooves look like black transparent resin. So it's not like they're lying about that, at least.

25. Good point! Your thinking made me curious about the balance point and the stringing of the new body, so I just tried if it out and did some stringing experiment. The nicety about the new body is that you can also string the legs onto it the old way, through the body and the neck. And it works perfectly. My new sweet witch body is now posing on my old Beryl hooves without any problems. The old legs almost fit perfectly, there is al little cap between the bodypart en the leg at the back, because the old legs have smaller hips joints . But that's the only thing that has to be changed.

I really, really hope Soom will be adapting the legs this way, at the hips joints, because that doesn't change the look of the old hooves legs and they look really great under the new body. I just asked them about it on the Q&A board.

26. As long as they leave the hip slot showing in the front of the leg (the old legs have this) she can still sit and this solution would work fine!

27. I wasn't convinced by the attachment of the legs on my new male body, I'll try too !

And let me present you Orion, my soom Dia ! (on Heliot hooved body)

28. Nice. I didn't know that the inside was open so that you could string them that way, too. Then, you could even mod the new legs to be strung normally (so what I would do if I ever were to get that body). However, I doubt they'll be offering whole legs for the succubus parts. The new body is made specifically so that the strings are hidden everywhere and so that you can swap the legs without having to re-string the whole doll. Revealing the string at the top of the thigh and offering whole legs as options would beat the purpose of that. And mean that you need a completely different string and have to re-do the whole body string. That's even harder than with the old bodies where you could just unstring the body's legs without doing anything to the torso. I don't see any reason for Soom to offer whole legs -though it's definitely what I would prefer as well.

It's driving me nuts that they make major updates to their sales and STILL haven't answered on the Q&A. >_>*

29. Seems that they answered questions on the board.

30. Still not mine... I have put my question on their board last friday... There was some replies on tuesday but nothing more ...
that is pissed me off..

31. If anyone gets their questions answered about Beryl, please post the answer here!!

I agree that there are a lot of un-answered questions which could very dramatically affect the look of the final doll. I don't think they should be selling a doll that doesn't yet exist in prototype form, because the changes they might *need* to make to the legs could really affect the look and balance of the overall doll.

(I'm actually a fan of the new body, especially the arms and hands, so I'd be delighted to get a new/old hybrid Beryl . . . but I'd want to know for sure what I'd be getting!)

And, yes -- where's the SOOM love for Topaz? I want a Topaz re-release like CRAZY, although if they decide to produce her in grey, I hope it's their normal grey rather than smoky grey (since I prefer how the cool-toned grey supports a wide variety of face-up colors/styles.)

-- A <3

32. Thanks guys for such thorough explanation of the gray soom tones. I'd love to get one of the smoky gray girls In the future since Beryl is not exactly my cup of tea. But it worries me when there is the going to be the next smoky SG girl since this is like, what, a second smoky gray soom girl ?

33. As far as answering questions on the boards, I have posted two questions about Beryl and Soom answered both of mine the next day. Are you using the english one or a different one? I didn't ask about the hooves though. I asked about adding the option for a second body back for the extra head and they said that they couldn't change options for their dolls which I thought was really weird since they changed all the options for her and I was only asking them to add that one back.

And about the smoky gray girls, I think this is the third one. Sweet Witch was first and then Snow White was smoky gray too I think.

34. I posted mine on the Euro side last Friday as well. They seem to keep answering on the USD side and then more questions appear and they answer those instead of going for the older euro side ones (which are also in English). They answered on the EUR side to a few questions on the 8th and then stopped before mine (which was made on the same day as some questions that were answered). They're being totally inefficient about that side for whatever reason. >_>

35. Is anyone else having a hard time logging in to their Soom account? I just tried to login to make a payment on my Heliot girl but it gave me an error saying there is no member info.

36. I just logged in without a problem. Are you sure you are on the right site? If you accidentally click on the euro site insteadof the Eng site, you won't be able to sign on.

37. K, I exited out and went back in and it let me log in now. Very strange! Maybe I did accidentally hit the wrong one! Thanks!

38. Soom finally answered me but they just said that they're asking the manufacturing department if it's possible to order the old body. Nothing about the hooves, so I'll just assume they haven't made the new body version hooves yet at all and thus have nothing to show in regards to them. There should be more info next week apparently, so maybe they'll make an announcement. This release is a bit of a trainwreck imo.

39. I just need to scream with joy and run around in circles for a minute -- I JUST BOUGHT MY DREAM DOLL!!! *flail*

Came across a fullset Amber being sold by a lovely DoA member with whom I'd had a previous awesome doll transaction, and it means FINALLY AMBER WILL BE MINE!!! :D

(Couldn't get the cash together in 2008, have been trying and failing to get just the right Amber ever since.)

She is so beautiful, and I am so happy! I can't wait for her to arrive!!

*rolls around in delight*

-- A :D

40. w00t! :dance

You will, of course, have to absolutely bury us in pictures when she arrives. ^_^

41. Ashbet, congratulations! A fullset after all this time is quite a prize!

42. Definitely a train wreck! They should have just left the listing as it was and added a listing for the human version on the new body.

43. Ashbet Oh wow, many congrats on finding your grail~ It's been so many years after the release that I bet fullsets are quite hard to come by! Hope she arrives to you soon and turns out to be as gorgeous as you expected ^^ Don't forget to share some pictures with us <3

44. Hi friends! May I join with my dolls? :kitty2

45. Oh please spam us Ashbet. I have one that I'm doing some matainence on tomorrow but I always love what others are doing with their own.

46. Vinsent Wolf of course you may! I'd at least love to see what kind of sg dolls you have :)

Ashbet woOp! Goncrats from my behalf too :) I guess it's the amber with the hooves and horns and those awesome tree fingers, hehe. But not the violet version, right?

47. Oh! I'll show you....
Firs one... My sweet demon named Dominic

48. ooo Dominic is gorgeous--I love that red hair!

49. Thanks!! He is sexy on this photo but in real he is very shy and kind. And he loves his brothers)))

50. Sneaking into the thread -- I read back a few pages and found the photos posted to be quite helpful, especially in the grey resin comparisons!

I own no SGs myself, since I always thought they were a bit big for me (that, and all the ones I really loved were long gone), but now that Beryl has been re-released (again?) I am sorely tempted as I've ventured into the land of SD sized dolls as of last year -- the largest doll I have is a SmartDoll Mirai, for reference.

I am a little confused as to how the actual doll with the fantasy parts will look, though. In reading back a few pages, I see there were some concerns about which body will come with the hooves? I think if I wind up caving I may go for the old body + fantasy parts, if that is possible.

51. I don't know. .. are you guys too hopeful that soom would offer the old body with beryl when they are such a mess of a company currently? I mean they can't even send a doll with all the correct parts included lol

Vinsent Wolf oh lala, Dominic is a temptatious man :D you should show photo of him with his brothers too :)

52. I don't feel it's being "too hopeful" since this particular gray Beryl was sold on the old body when the listing first went up on Soom's website and the photos are of her on the old body with her original hooves , too - even this release's name "The Neverending Dream" is the same as the original and very first MD release of Beryl. The only difference was that the skin tone was Smoky Gray instead of Cream White and obviously her wig and outfit are of different colour and slightly different style as well.

Now, they probably changed her onto the new body and new type hooves (that we still haven't seen photos of) because some customers requested that. And yes, it's true that they can't please everyone. But since they did plan to sell this particular Beryl on the old body at first, it shouldn't come as a surprise to Soom nor anyone that there are also customers who prefer the old body and expected to be able to purchase Beryl on the old body with her original hooves.

53. Hi everyone ~
Dominic is spot on my taste :aheartbea
I love boys with more delicate and elegant features.
> w <

For the concerns about the Beryl hooves. I don't think the sculpt or jointing of the hooves will change (besides the OPTION) of the extra joint.
Extra jointing is only possible in the new body HUMAN thigh. So I highly doubt they will change the joints of the hooves to the less jointed kind like for instance Benmore has.
The part they have to mod seems to be the knees.

So the legs for the new body Version will be:
New body style human thigh (with option of extra joint), possibly old part modded to fit or part of the new body human calf and after that just the exact beryl hooves like they were.
I don't own any Beryl but if the hoof and the lowest part of the leg with the hoof fur on it was fused with the hooves they will be most likely two parts now.
The black / clear part will be only the hooves (like benmore again ^^ยฐ) and the hoof fur part smokey grey resin.

I found someone moding Galena bird legs to fit on the new style body and she took pictures of the joints BEFORE the mod.
So you can exactly see where the mod needs to happen and it isn't too much to be done.

I can understand the doubts but if this is really 99% the doll you want and you don't buy her because of 1% hooves doubt ... I wouldn't be too worried.
I believe Soom is 100% capable of matching old parts to the new bodies.
Have you never realised that many of the new fantasy hands are the same as some old style ones ?
I think Prince Charming's hooves look the same as Heliots + mods and so on ^^

Finally the picture. There are more on her flickr. Hope it is okay to share here.

[IMG]knee joint back by foxwindstudios, auf Flickr

I would have posted this earlier but I am right now finishing some ' real life size fantasyparts ' for a cosplay x____X

Hope i could help somehow.
Still waiting for my Isha ... I feel it is just DAYS now.

54. If it's such an easy and quick fix to make, then how come we still don't have photos of the new type hooves? And even if they could make only some small adjustments to the knees and keep the rest of the fantasy legs the same, I still wouldn't buy this Beryl because I don't want the new type body for her. The new body is far from the beautiful hourglass shape of the old body with the lovely wide shoulders and hips. The new body doesn't have as nice curves and I personally don't like the jointing either (whether or not it is "better" at posing is quite subjective because people look for different things in their dolls' posing, I find).

It's rather different modifying old type hands to fit the new body, since there's only the wrist joint to be changed. With legs they need to consider not only the joints but the balance of the whole doll, since I'm sure most of us want a doll that can stand on its own. So, it's not quite as simple to modify the legs, especially when the old and new type bodies are strung differently. But that was already discussed earlier in this thread, so I won't delve deeper into that.

Just as those who have a right to like the new body because it suits their personal taste, those of us who find the old body more pleasing to our personal taste should have a right to keep liking the old body. I wouldn't even expect to be able to purchase this particular Beryl on the old body IF they'd had her on the new body from the beginning. But that is not the case here. That's why me and some other people are upset because of this sudden change that Soom still has not even made a public announcement about.

55. For me it's quite simple. I would like to know what I'm buying when I'm spending that amount of money. The old hooves don't fit on the new body, that's a fact. It needs modding and since Soom isn't provided any information (pictures or answering questions) about how they will make them fit, I don't know how she will look. It might be a minor changed, but what if they decided to do more than a minor change. We don't know that. We don't know if they are changing the knee joint, or changing the hip joints or even reshape the whole leg. And at the moment they are only selling her on the new body. I adore her on the old body, I can love her on the new body. I might even consider buying her on the new body with the adapted hooves, but I'm certainly NOT buying her if I haven't seen any pictures of how they adapted the hooves, not when so much money is involved. I don't settle for the 99%, I want the 100%.

56. raafje, Exactly, I completely agree with you. I don't see why anyone should have to settle for less than a 100% certainty when it comes to buying something so valuable.

I definitely hope that Soom will redeem themselves and have more detailed info and photos up, sooner rather than later. There isn't that much time left of Beryl's order period anyway...

57. ShaySugar, thank you. I'll definitly show his elder brothers for you))

Prince Whitemare, I love this style too) And also I love dark style so usually my boys wear black clothes))

58. Thanks so much, everyone!! :aheartbea

She's the original Cream White version, with non-default face-up/blushing, but default dress and fantasy parts. I can't wait to see her -- and, yes, I promise to take TONS of photos!!

:sumomo:

I have a fantastic SG-sized dress from AyuAna which I'd been saving for my Tawny Heliot-girl, when she arrives -- but it's even better-suited to Amber's forest-y theme! (They'll both get to wear it eventually, but I think that debuting on Amber makes perfect sense!)

Seriously, I am in a WORLD OF SQUEE right now. (And if I can someday get a Breccia head, I still have all of her blushed fantasy parts in a box . . . Beryl, Amber, and Breccia are my Soom Dream Trifecta, and I now have two out of three!!)

Ooohhh, he's gorgeous! Yes, please, we'd love to see more of him -- and your other dolls, too! :D

59. Just popping in to clarify, Prince Whitemare I'm the one doing that mod, and yes those are Galena legs, but those are Souldoll thighs, not the new Soom body thighs. :sweat

60. Oh :sweat
My bad.

Anyway that's the part that doesn't fit with the Soom bodies too.
Hope you don't mind me posting this >___<
Thanks for making things clear :aheartbea

I hope they post pictures soon of the exact doll they sell but I think it will simply be old fantasy parts matched to fit the new body.
Nothing more, nothing less.
I bet my fingers they won't sell you a doll with gaps in the hip jointing or something that suddendly uses completely different looking fanatsy parts.
They have this kind of jointing already for the female new body(Lady Rose) just remove the cat feet and put the hooves there.
Most fantasy dollies of Soom can't stand on their fantasy parts without being sueded and/or supported anyway, to be fair.
Some of the heavy legged and big feet ones (like Benmore) can but even White Rabbit can barely balance and I have sueded him already.
Soom doesn''t really care for balancing the dolls. They look pretty .. sitting or with a stand.
Especially those with the even more jointed fantasy legs like Beryl, Heliot etc. Their legs will most likely bend under their mere weight
And yes, the parts are strung different, but they have those parts already made for the new body and only need to match the one joint between the human calf and the hoof leg.
The rest is just drilled holes.

So just to finish this.

I just wanted to help .. not to change anybodies mind about new vs old body or something.

It absolutely sucks that they haven't answered or shown any pictures.

Just wanted to show that they don't need dark magic for making the doll this way.
