Well, For me personally I will not be purchasing any full body painted dolls. It is one of my personal pet peeves is to buy something and get something else. I don't think SOOM is trying to pull one over on anyone I just think body painting is just not worth the money if it is going to chip like that. I do think their doll is beautiful. I am kind of a perfectionist about how my doll looks so that would drive me insane. I guess if you go in with the notion it is a major possibility your doll is gonna be chipped or worse and your okay with it, go for it. I'll pass. My sympathys to all of you who are disappointed.
YAI my sympathy goes to all people disappointed with beryl blushing too,at this point i will not order the blushing, square and simple i'm not able to handle a thing like this,it's unacceptable, as the doll was limited and no one expect that she comes EXACLTY repainted as promo pics,BUT well painted for sure.....
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they get similar complaints/problems with Sard and Bix. Bix's claw should really be glossed, not just coated in MSC imo. I hope it comes like that.
agreed. i think it would look better glossed, actually. *shifty eyes* i don't get why they didn't gloss Beryl's hooves- i think that would have looked really nice and ta-daaah, the chipping-problem wouldn't have been so apparent either. oh well. i packed up my Beryl's body this afternoon and am just waiting to hear back from Soom again one time and then i'll send her back.
That's odd, some of the earlier owner pics seemed to show Beryl's hooves as glossed...maybe they forgot?? O.o Anyway, in answer to what someone said earlier about the chipping happening far too soon on Beryl: that's probably because she's a very heavy doll, with hoof legs. No other company has tried the hoof construction before, so it's fair to say Soom probably didn't foresee all these problems people are having. The hoof construction (I presume, not having actually seen it) is probably also complicated enough, from what kawaii_mon has said, that any sort of movement will chip the paint no matter what you coat it with.
My Beryl just came home, so now I can see some of the issues: part of the problem is the scalloping on the lower leg piece that sits on top of the hoof is sharp, and because of which, no amount of MSCing the hoof is going to protect it from a good scrape (I learned this in a restringing accident). Unfortunately, I do not think Beryl was coated. Usually when you first open up your doll from its packaging, you're hit in the face with the stink of MSC, I cannot even smell it on her when I put my nose to her (you should at least smell it slightly if she's been sprayed recently). And her shimmer was coming off on my fingers. I've since given my girl 2-4 coats, depending on the parts (the legs got 4 coats), and then I used an artist matte varnish on the hooves. I can rake my fingernails across the hooves now with no paint coming off of it. But again, even that doesn't help the rough edges of the scalloped lower leg piece -- and that piece IS sueded, it just that because it is scalloped, I cannot get the suede all the way to the far edges without it showing. I'm going to have to figure something out.
if i could step back in time i probably wouldnt have gotten the body and legs painted, i ordered a sard with the body brushin as well wonder if can change that.... echo is right i dont think they went all out on the msc coating like they should have. so far my body looks fine but i did scratch the bottom of one hoof while disembling to suede. its not bad and i ordered all the colors soom used on her to have them around. i really need to disamble her and spray her but i it has been humid and im not sure where i would spray at since there is not way in hell i can do it in my home. my soom hooves were not glossed which would have been nice. i am very happy with the sculpt though she is very unique. i think that soom really should have glossed and coated the bodies better.
Griffonfeathers sold her Beryl to me, and she mentioned to me the paint chipped for her too before I adopted her. Since I have played with her a lot I just came to grips that it is going to happen. Thick amounts of Acrylic too on eyes or elsewhere will chip no matter what too unless you protect it well. (ie around eyes gloss is added for the eye look and I have learned for protection too). Ive played with her a lot and at the joints where she is blushed and the joints move, the paint will chip and rub. There just is no way to avoid it. Since I have played with her so much her paint is rubbing on the edges as well as where her hooves touch too. Parts where the resin will rub agains with posing etc will rub the paint off as well. Im just going to live with her default look until chipping until it gets REALLY bad. When it does, I am going to sit down and add her human legs on while I repaint and blush her hooves. I noticed tho cleaning her in spots where she tends to get dirty, the legs etc, with a magic eraser tends to pick up some of the pigment too from the blushing. I don't think they were covered well in msc, but in any case there is NO way to stop it, even with a new painting on the legs.
So I was thinking long & hard about this and I wanted to get some opinions. What if I dyed her lower leg parts a darker color, would the chipping be as evident you think? Not sure how I would pull it off persay, but just thought I'd throw that out there. Opinions please?
Dyeing in what way? I don't think Dyeing is a good idea because it will stain the resin and if you ever sell her, would compromise its limited value. Its a little vague though, explain what you mean about Dye...
AH. Okay. im not familiar with that which is why I reacted that way. Is there any links of the process on here?
http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139610 There's the tutorial listed in the customizing sub forum. And the point is kind of to stain the resin, tho I hear it can be sanded off, but that still sounds a bit more durable than the blushing. but yeah, kuraiaangels, thats what I meant, dying the leg parts in rit dye.
you'll have fun. keep your vent turned off. lol or your vent will be dyed too. (white microwave is now orange)
Like everyone has said, there isn't really any way of stopping/avoiding the chipping on her legwork. You could try and MSC her to death, but I'd imagine that'd only slow the chipping process. There is no absorbtion of paint by the resin, so it just sits on the surface.
When I got my replacement legs back from SOOM I coated them with MSC at least 5 times. I also used a satin finish on the hooves---think I used around three coats. To cushion the paint on the legs I plivered the lower parts, and I have to say that Beryl looks great. There are no rubs or chips.
Ha ha maybe I'll find a way to boil it outside... on the grill maybe? lol. Our microwave is the landlords so I don't think he'd like that. >.>
yep that works. i got a big pot too that i used for mine. since you live in the area if you want you can borrow mine. i dyed my dz fox's whole body. i'll shoot ya a pm
Yikes! I have never MSC's my dolls since I always get the "Default" faceup. Well, I guess I better get to ordering. I am so sad I missed Beryl and Sard now that I see the owner pic's they really are beautiful dolls. I am glad to hear Soom repainted your Beryl's feet. I will look for all those owner pic's
I know that this is an older thread but I found in interesting. I have a Beryl coming soon and plain to paint / Blush her my self as I have don't to countless other dolls and Volks Garage kits for YEARS... I never bother getting the Blush jobs from the company for this very reason.. Heres a few hints for you DIYS ers out there... 1. Use a Flat or gloss brush on coast in and around the joint. I would say between 4 and 8 depending on the joint. Testers and Mr. Color both make these as well as Tomiya paints if you can find them. Coat the remaining body parts in MCS in nice even coats let it dry in between coats!! I fond that hanging parts up and spraying them works best so that its even and does not get spray lines. 2. If your going to Dye any doll or clothing with rite dye. Also buy self sticking shelf paper. What you do is clean your hood, cabinet, microwave or what ever is above the stove. then apply the shelf paper to the surface. This way as the dye boils off it will go on the shelf paper and not your kitchen. When done peel off and toss in the trash. 3. As some one said Kips are great for the joints as well. With Dolls like the Soom Month dolls if you Suede the front part of the joint thinly and use a kip I think you get the best result not only for standing and posing but also to help with wear and tear.. PLEASE feel free to contact me for advice on doll mods, painting, care and up keep at any time!! I will have an advise column my new site as well be sure to check it out!
