~I apologize if this is in the wrong thread, feel free to move if nessecary.~ So, this is a semi question, semi discussion. I was browsing the soom gem dolls, and their monthly edition dolls, and found one i fell head over heels for. it's my dream doll, i know that much. (finally found my dream doll btw) and it was the rabbit doll, the one sold back in december. Now then, i don't have money to get him anyway, but i was wondering if the monthly dolls will always be sold out, or if you can talk the site into making a doll for you. the discussion part of this is, is that if you can't sell the dolls, is it fair to keep showing the dolls on the site as sold out but to show how nice they are? or should they be put in just a gallery instead of the actual shopping area? ~ again if this is the wrong place to post this, please let me know and move it to the appropriate place. thank you~
They're limited editions, so sadly, when their order period ends, that's curtains on that sculpt. The only exceptions I've seen are when SOOM holds a lottery contest where you can win the chance to buy a previous sculpt (of that year). Otherwise, the secondhand market is where you have to look for your dream dolly. The MP here on DoA sometimes has magical surprises in wait, if you are able to keep looking and looking.
Once they're sold out, they're pretty much sold out. The exceptions: Soom will sometimes do lotteries for one or two of the sold out dolls, and sometimes they will re-release them without fantasy parts and in a different skintone. I don't see the issue with them keeping them up to be seen; it's like an artist's portfolio. They're not trying to go "Nyah nyah nyah, look what you can't have!", they're just showing what they have done in the past.
The originals will never be sold again. Like Deku above me pointed out, they did have a lottery for some left over dolls, but I can't really call that selling :/They do bring out basic versions in different skintones now, every now and then, but there's no predicting which will come up next. Your best bet would be the marketplace. I like that they keep the images up. I like to look at them every once in a while. And I don't think it's really unclear that they are sold out and how their monthly doll thing works.
Well, Soom sometimes offers the same sculpt again as "Special Order". So if you're not really into the bunny parts and could do with different skin tones as well, you'll just have to hang out and wait until they will be released as a special order one day. (Oh, and it actually helps if you let them know that you would like to have them re-released as SO. I've noticed that Soom tends to listen to their customers) Also, during the last years Soom always held special events at the end of the year. They used to hold lotteries for their older LEs, too, so if you're lucky they might do a raffle for the bunnies at the end of the year, too and if you're very very lucky you might even win them .
it'd only happen in my dreams though lol. at the moment i have no means to get a doll so im really just torturing myself looking at dolls but at least i have the info when i can order.....in the distant future
Yes it's completely OK for a company to show Sold Out dolls!!!!!! As pointed out it's like an artists portfolio. Also IF they removed all their SO dolls people might enter the site thinking "this company doesn't have many dolls, do they?". And it sort of helped you find a doll from them you really like, right? edit: for the lotteries I believe you need to show proof of a past MD (?) purchase in the same year (?) to enter though. But Soom MDs almost always show up on the MP, so even if you have to save for a while don't worry that it's never going to happen XD
Another reason they keep a list of 'sold out' dolls is so that when someone is selling x doll, they mention x doll is by y company. So you can go to y company and see that yes they did make that doll/mold. (Which is good for the company as you then may look over what they have currently for sale).
I believe that was only with some of the doll items. Not the dolls themselves. The dolls that were lotteried off were more then likely canceled orders or orders that never got paid off, and Soom got left holding the bag. But it is possible that they'll have some left overs again this year.
I guess you have to look at the 2nd hand market. And I guess this is the reason SOOM MDs are generally overpriced (sometimes can be unbelievably high). I guess this is a good way of doing business for companies like SOOM and Volks. They keep releasing limit molds for a very small amount and attracting many impulse buys.
