Soom Little Gem Monthly Mini Doll discussion (part 4)

May 28, 2013

    1. >//w//< Ahhh congrats to everyone who received their centaurs! Keep spamming them please! <333
;A; It sucks about the resin not being drilled out for some of you though....It seems Soom has been making a lot of mistakes recently... OTL

Ohh, I love the wigs/outfits you have for your centaurs Lil Spark! I can't wait to see them with those wigs!~:D
;A; Oh gosh, and your centaur is so so sooooo pretty, Raiisu!~ <333

      -----------

TvT Aaaaannnnd my centaur got a new faceup recently. Its much closer to what I envisioned for him, but i'm not so sure its just right yet. ;_; Its so frustratingly difficult to accurately translate a drawn character onto a 3D canvas... especially when you aren't very good at faceups. OTL

    2. I think he looks amazing Arkelle. I love your boy. I imagine it can be hard to get him exactly the way he looks in your head but I think he looks great :)

    3. Arkelle.... Not good at faceups? NOT GOOD AT FACEUPS?!? If I could do faceups like that one I'd be happy. All three of my adamelli/shale heads need faceups (two are blank, the second blank one is coming home soon, the third just needs fixing up).

    4. Thank you Nattou!

    5. Well at last a response, they send me a new pieces when they are ready, i hope dont wait a month or thwo for a 4 pieces :/ .

    6. It may take a while, Kalisha. They goofed up my SG FCE order, and I had to send the parts back over a month ago. I will be content if they sent the correct parts along within a couple of months.

    7. Arkelle, not good at faceups? You must be joking! XvX/
He looks fantastic! I'll never get tired of seeing him, so spam more photos for us after you dub his faceup completely good! :D

    8. Your boy is adorable, Arkelle. Seconding all the others - your faceup is lovely!

Haven't shared a picture of Alexis in a while...

    9. I think that is one of my pet peeves in this hobby, false modesty. Arkelle, that's just hurtful to anyone who is really not good at faceups. Clearly you are awesome.

      Alexis is so cute!

    10. I don't think it's false modesty at all. Artists tend to be overly critical of their own work and Arkelle probably genuinely feels like she could improve her face-ups more. I think it's beautiful too, but I'm not going to dismiss her feelings because they seem perfectly reasonable to me. I know that if I were doing my own face-ups (which I'm sure I'd be horrible at), even if I were pretty good at doing them, I probably would never be satisfied because I'm an extreme perfectionist when it comes to my dolls and the way they look. There's no reason to accuse her of being falsely modest when that is very likely how she actually feels. I mean, maybe you were trying to compliment her by saying the face-up is awesome (which it is), but it seems to me like you went about it in an unnecessarily hurtful way. Hopefully it was unintentional...

Sorry, I'm not trying to be mean or anything (so please don't take it personally), but I just had to say something because I feel like I really understand where Arkelle is coming from. As an artist (my art is photography), I understand the feeling that my art (in my case my photos) just aren't good enough yet (and they may never be to me). Even though many people have complimented my photos, I definitely think I could still improve.

Arkelle, the face-up is beautiful and your boy looks wonderful! I hope that someday you are able to achieve his look the way you truly envision it! :)

    11. T//u//T Thank you everyone for your kind words, really, I deeply appreciate all of your sweet kindness. <333

;__; But about the false modesty thing, I do mean what I say honestly. I deeply apologize if I seem insincere about it and I certainly don't mean to insult others by saying so. To explain, i've only done a handful of faceups before, so when I say that I am not very good at them I mean it more in the sense that I haven't had a lot of practice and so it is very frustrating and takes me ages to get something to look even half of what I envision it to be. Its a lot of constant trial and error every time, wiping and re-drawing over and over to do even the simplest of things out of utter discontent. However, I am primarily a drawing type of artist -specifically drawing people- so even though I am new at doing faceups I do have the pre-existing knowledge of the basic principles of art and how to apply them, which many beginning face up artist do not, hence why mine might seem quite good in comparison. But that being said, I am still very much a beginner in this particular medium and there is a lot that I do not know and I am certainly not ignorant to that fact. Especially in this hobby where so many people strive for perfection in their own collections/skills, I can't help but to be realistic about my own skill in comparison, which is honestly not on the same level. I am and will always be modest about any type of skills or achievements that I may have because If there is one thing i've learned from being an artist, it is that the moment you think you are amazing is the moment you stop improving. I see now that through other people's eyes it might seem like i'm being facetious, but to me through my own eyes, I see my own work as something that can always be greatly improved upon, and so I speak of my work exactly the way I feel about it; modestly.

Kelaria explained my feelings perfectly. Many artists are at least in part, perfectionists, and tend to have a subconscious feeling of discontent with their own work (some more extremely than others) as a way to push themselves to always strive to improve and being honest about that discontent does not mean that they are acting falsely modest, belittling others, nor fishing for compliments.

    12. As human beings (artists and otherwise), we always have room for improvement! Nobody is perfect and we can all learn more every day! :) Being honest about what we feel are our shortcomings is a good way to remind ourselves that we can always improve and get better at the things we love!

You don't need to apologize, because you seemed perfectly sincere to me! I won't even attempt to do face-ups because I know my perfectionist nature would never allow me to be satisfied with them... :sweat And since I wouldn't have a drawing background (the extent of my drawing skills is basically stick figures), I really doubt I have the skills to be even 1/10th as good as I would want to be. :XD:

On a separate note, I noticed there are stars in your boy's pupils! Are those actually part of his eyes, or did you edit them in on the computer? I'd love to see more of your boy if you feel comfortable sharing! :)

    13. I understand that artists perfectionism bit, as a guy who draws a lot I critique everything I ever draw endlessly and sometimes I really worry what it looks like to other people, or how bad it might look to me in a month. "orz
Sometimes it gets bad and becomes a self-esteem issue for some of us and it basically leads to horror that is "Art block".

So probably it is like drawing, where you could practice a lot yeah? The more you draw the better you get, as long as it's not the same drawing over and over. "Do it 'wrong' until you can get it 'right' " yeah?

Also it is sort of like, those who do not draw a lot think your art is good, but to you, who may draw frequently and look at other works, can see what is wrong with your drawing, so the me who has no experience with doing faceup thinks that yours even right now, looks really good.
But, I do look forward to seeing more of your centaur and the face ups you do for him, Arkelle! Especially when you are perfectly happy with it! It's always awesome when you're happy with a drawing, or something you do.
Nothing feels better than seeing improvement for yourself an artist, right? (atleastforme) So keep going until you feel like you are happy with it! : D
I would like to try to do one myself at some point, it makes me think of putting textures to a 3D model somehow, but on a physical object...but you can't use Photoshop, and it is materials that I am not used too instead! XVX/
I think I will stick to drawing until I could practice on a blank head, lol.

Good luck on your faceup adventures! BU

Aaaaand regarding Kelaria's comment on his eyes. I really like those stars in 'em too! Can I ask where you got them?

    14. Let me introduce you to my Sophia
she loves the sweet, as I))
I'm sorry, my English is not very good:blush

    15. I love her hikari :) and your English isn't all that bad ^^ you did a wonderful job on that outfit!

    16. @Kelaria, >w< Yes! Exactly! x3 I'm glad to see we have very similar mentalities on the subject~
TvT And i'm glad that you see my sincerity. I'm sure it wasn't really necessary to defend it, but its a common spot I find myself in so i've gotten quite use to it.
;___; Yeah, exactly. Sometimes I think it would be much less stressful to have other people do faceups for me if only because I see other people's work more highly than my own. The only reason that I don't is because I tend to have very specific visions for my dolls/characters and I'm not so good at explaining them. TuT And... it does feel pretty amazing once you've gotten it perfect knowing that you did it all on your own~

@Nattou, ;A; Oh gosh you understand perfectly! Yes, its exactly like that for me too. I'm always super critical of my art, even despite others always complimenting me on it. ;__; But my style of drawing is rather extreme and exaggerated, so I know there are those who don't like it and that can be really discouraging sometimes, especially when I am so doubtful of my skills already. OTL
TvT But yes, doing faceups is a lot like learning to draw all over again in my opinion. There are some things that are universal, but there are a lot of things that must be done in a different method than what you'd normally think to do. Especially since I do have a rather distinct way of drawing, subconsciously I want to reflect that when I do faceups but while that sounds nice, in reality it doesn't work as well as I'd like it to and so it is a very frustrating process.
xD Haha, and yesssss as an artists its so weird going from a 2D surface to a 3D one like a bjd. I'm so used to creating lighting and shadows for example when I draw, but on a real 3D object that isn't necessary and its super weird to almost disregard something that is so vital to a 2D artist xDDD
      >v< But even so, it is super amazing to get the opportunity to create faceups yourself and realize your own visions, even if you aren't that good at first. I think anyone who is artistically inclined should definitely give it a try someday, you included! <3

      ----------------

T///u///T And thank you both again, you are too kind <3 Hopefully I'll start working on the rest of his blushing sometime soon and maybe that will help me decide if his faceup is really what I want or not. ;u; And i'll be sure to share a picture when I do <3
Anyways, about the eyes, yes, the stars are actually part of the eyes themselves! :D
      They are from Souldoll~ http://souldoll.com/shop/step1.php?number=2905&b_code=B20021125011548&c_code=C20080517072522

    17. I might have to pick up a pair of those eyes! ;) I have no idea what doll I'd use them for yet, but I like them so much that I'm sure I'll come up with a doll to use them with, just so I can! :XD:

    18. Thank you))
      You're very generous))

    19. Haha, I think I will give a face up a try someday. I will get a Soom Feny secondhand from the MP rather soon, and he'll be blank so I can try on him! BD
So far, the closest I came to doing face up is the blushing of the horse parts of my Shale centaur that my brother and I did together.
Though it's a little messy hahaha.
((Excuse to show photos. So show them off you guys. I like to see your pictures. *V*/ ))

    20. I'm experimenting with using a minifee body for my Gwynn (Mylo) what do you guys think?

    21. I like it :3 I was thinking of doing that with my adamelli

    22. The neck looks a little long to me, but other than that she's adorable~

    23. Thank you guys!
I'll try removing the kip I put in her neck and maybe angling her head down for pictures.

    24. She does look adorable on that body, but I have to agree the neck seems a little long. I can't wait to see more pictures of her!

    25. Well, I took the kip out and angled her head down a bit. Thoughts?

    26. Yes, that helps ^^ adorable!

    27. Thank you so much!

    28. Yw :) I hope to see you two at another meet up soon ^^

    29. Us two?
I missed the meet last Sunday. :/

    30. I haven't been to a Seattle meet in a while, but you and one of your mylo dolls were there I think the last time I was.

    31. Yep! That was Gwynn!

    32. Lol, that's what I thought. Are you planning on still using your hooves? I'm curious to see how they look :3
