Niyavka is based on the old Slavic myth of the Mavka (also called Navka or Niavka), the spirit of a young girl who died an unnatural death.
Niyavka lived around 900 AD in what is now Russia. When her village was colonized by western Europeans, she refused to give up her traditional beliefs and was executed for witchcraft. Her unjust and untimely death caused her to become a restless spirit.
