What do you guys think about the Christmas Free Choice event?

I'm toying around with the idea ordering Zak ♡♡

 

I'm probably the only person who wished the ID72 would be an option too ^^" The ID75 is just way too tall for me...

 

I recently got my first ever Soom Idealian (Shoshon) in tawny so I'll probably have to pass the event this time

 

Oooh Shoshon ♡ If I didn't wait so die-hard for River, I would've totally ordered Shoshon myself too, he's so precious! Please share him when you can ^-^

Zak has been on my wishlist for a while and I was surprised to see him in this event since he had quite some releases since late 2020, so he might not re-release again too soon I guess?

Hyperon too is on my wishlist - albeit his scarred version for a specific custom character doll, so I'd rather wait for that one instead of ending up with two of the same sculpts (more or less :p)

 

I'm completely with you on that. I get that they've made a few improvements on the 75, but my last '75' was more like 78, and just wasn't in proportion with my other dolls

 

My Phonolus was 76cm tall which was just... waaaaaay too big for all my other dolls x.x I've always seen my ID72 as a guy who is around 1,86m (6"1), so - 76cm should be 2,20m :S And hes really not a Basketball player.

 

I'm also eyeing Zak, but maybe I should be good hahaha. I love the options for this Free choice event though!

 

I gotta jump on this event since I've been waiting for this version of Hyperon.

 

Finally my grail basic version Hyperon in this event! I'm also very tempted by Zak!! I have a 72 Zak in grey skin but I want another

 

The Free Choice event is really tempting. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a comparison between a basic Zak and Hyperon? I can't decide between the two and ordering two isn't an option right now. Would appreciate the help!

 

@DemonMiko I can relate to the dilemma of choosing between Zak and Hyperon. I would say that Basic/open eye Hyperon is hard to be re-release from SOOM based on many of us on here have been asking SOOM on their website Q&A for years (yep, I did that, a lot). I got my dark Elf Zak (in gray), then they re-release Basic Zak in November of 2020 and now he is available again.

If you are on Instagram, try to see owner pictures of both boys to see who is calling to you and that may helps you make the decision. Whoever you bring home, it will be a Win! Best of luck!

 

That's such good advice to browse owner photos! I have been fence sitting myself because this will be the first time EVER that I will have the funds for a Soom deadline, lol.

I am having a hard time choosing between Amor and M. Phonolus because I know I can't swing both! So far the teeth are winning over the lips. xD

Oh wow! I'd never really looked at either sculpt before, but there's so many pretty customs on Instagram. I might have to get Amor. I love those lips.

 

Right?? I have to stop looking, lmao. I love Amor's full lips and that ~sexy downturned pout but... I missed out on Phonolus and it's really the first sculpt with teeth that I really like the expression. If you do get Amor though, share all the pics of him so I can be jealous!

 

I definitely will and if you get Phonolus, we need all the pictures. He’s suuuuch a cool sculpt and there’s definitely not enough of them around.

happy to join: I finally caved in and ordered Amor in tawny color! Thank god for the layaway option!

 

That's exciting! I want to see all of the Amors. I bet the tawny colour will look so good too. I ended up caving too and actually going for a tawny M. Phonolus but man was it hard to decide between that and Amor.

 

Wow, did everyone see? Soom apparently accidentally sold out early today because they underestimated the amount of orders they'd receive. I'm glad the free choice was a success. I hope they do more in the future. I miss when they had Christmas Kits.

I saw!!! I almost didn’t try anymore to buy (I have been debating with myself about buying since the beginning of the event) and I had decided to go ahead, and then… it was sold out….
Came back to the website few hours after, noticed it was opened again… decided it was the sign I had to order, and… there you are!

 

Hello! Has anyone ever tried sanding down the inner eye sockets on any of the ID heads to make room for bigger eyes? The way my Garion's eye sockets are made make it hard to position the eyes well or even just go up one eye size.

 

I’ve never sanded an eye socket but I have an assortment of eyes and I can tell you none of the measurements are exact. They are all different both in diameter and surface curve. Not to mention iris size. I just keep trying different eyes until they fit and don’t gap. If you only have a few you may need to sand.

 

@Mahgiep I do have smaller eyes that can fit, but I have a specific pair I made myself and want to use, and sadly it's a special eye type that I don't have in a smaller size mold. I'll probably just have to widen the eye socket a bit.

 

Well I haven't sanded the inner eye sockets on an Idealian...but I have with a Dollshe Rosa. And by inner eyesockets...I mean the part inside the head cavity and the stuff that is not visible from the front.

I used little riffler files. Her inner eye sockets were wonky and any eyes I tried in her didn't sit right.

I don't know if that is helpful.

 

@luluna I went ahead and sanded the eye sockets with my Dremel. I've done something similar with the neck hole on one of my Switch heads so I had the basic idea of what to do. Thankfully, I was able to open them up enough to allow my eyes to fit in without deforming the eye itself. *sigh of relief*

 

Oh, Soom used to sell unstrung, blank bjds in 'kits' at Christmas time! This was a while back though.

 

You solved it already, but for future reference: yes. York has extremely wide eyes, while the sockets are made for 14mm eyes and 14mm only. And I found that all of mine gap and there's no way to fit anything bigger than 14mms into those sockets. So, non-gapping eyes were completely not possible, which left me with just one option: dremel.


Took down the dumb edges and even bits of the inner eyelid and I find that I still have some trouble with the right eyelid. All of my eyes just don't fit in deep enough, but I'm afraid to do much more. At least I can now fit in 16mm eyes to cover the whole area.

 

@Yenna Yeah, those raised edges are annoying. Even after dremeling them out, positioning the eyes is still kind of annoying, but at least now I can also get 16mm to mostly fit.

And the eyes in question, Garion eyes. They are just a test pair I made to see if I'd even like the look. I like the triple iris look. I'm going to make another pair with a black sclera to see if I like that one better.

 

Joining the Soom ID75cm train.. I made a promise to myself that I'm getting a Soom doll this year no matter what. I missed the Christmas choice promo, which is sad.. but I'm excited for their upcoming new releases.. Not of a fan of Vincent's sculpt though, but would love if they release Hyunn again.. Do you guys know how often Soom releases sculpts?

For the re-release, it all depends and SOOM just announced that they will have free choice this year too for their 20th year anniversary (I think). So finger crossed that your dream doll will be re-release!

 

It never hurts to ask Soom on the Q&A board. They do pay attention to custom requests even if you get a vary vague answer!

 

Another Free Choice this year (2022) sounds amazing! Gives me more time to figure out who I want to bring home first.

Does anyone know of Idealian-specific restringing guide or videos ? My boy arrived floppy and while it’s not a problem at the moment, I’d like a possibility of bringing him out for posed pictures.

I’m a newbie who hasn’t restrung a doll yet before. But I’ve gotten super sore fingers just by pulling up the brain part and S hook to attach and detach the heads hahah so much strength required….

 

Any re-stringing guide for a doll with the normal head to feet type of stringing will do. The are no special tricks to stringing an idealian and usually only the amount of pieces vary (if a doll has thigh joints for example). Lifting up the brain to rest in the head is honestly the worst part of stringing an Idealian, and if you're gonna do a full re-string I'd recommend putting the brain in place before you pull the string all the way to the feet and attach them. And also let the feet out before you take the brain down when taking it apart as well. I broke the neck bit of my headback cause the brain slipped out of my fingers while he was fully strung. Never doing that again. xD

 

Oh dear… sorry about that neckbit! Hopefully that didn’t affect the head attachment after. Thanks for sharing though, will definitely pay especial attention on keeping the brain in place once upper half is strung and before tangling with the lower half O.O

That’s one of what I’m worried about with following a video guide that uses another doll. Won’t get advice as this specific for the doll XD

I’ll just keep rewatching the videos and maybe, if I can get my hands on them, the jointed hands and try with their wiring/assembly first

Can anyone pm me their favorite soom clothing shops that isn't soom directly? Either professional shops, etsy, or commissions. Idk where to look for male clothing cuz all I find are for women or smaller soom dolls. T_T

@Ouja Akuma Are you using it from your phone or a computer? I find the site easiest to use on my computer and use googles native translation feature to translate the pages. You do have to search in Chinese, but again just use something like google translate to translate what you want to search for into Chinese and then pop that into the search bar. If I find a piece of text that can't be translated because it's part of a picture I use the google translate app on my phone, put it in camera mode aim my phone at the text on the screen and translate the text like that.

i too use Google translate on computer ; since it’s integrated with Chrome now, you can just right click anywhere on the page and select translate to English. Navigating is much easier then.

 

I use the computer but Google translate isn't reliable and often times I can't search for things without having to copy past the Chinese names etc for what I need, and even then idk if it's right cuz again, Google translate isn't reliable.
Plus, given world affairs right now, oversea orders are something I want to avoid especially with China right now.
