Soom Faery Legend discussion part 4

Apr 30, 2018

    1. I voted. Heaven knows how they will determine which one is made. So many choices.

    2. I voted as well although I can't buy any more dolls right now. I chose Kremer in light purple with his default wings.

    3. I voted for Absynthe in light green. I had no idea they would have that many resin color choices.*_*

    4. I voted for Rick in lt. violet with Labas wings.

    5. I was surprised by the resin colour choices, too. I like Saul's wings a lot but for Iwa-Xine (my Boehm). I had a tough time deciding between Kremer's default wings and the Labas wings but ultimately went with his default because they "matched" his ears.

    6. I ended up voting for Absynthe in the green with her wings and Labas in normal skin with his wings. Maybe I am a little boring in liking their original wings hahaha. But like @Iron_Dog I really can't afford another doll.

    7. Yeah. I just bought a doll (ironically a Soom Euclase who is STILL travelling to me because shipping so sooooo slow these days) and I was told a few days ago that the business I work for will be closing at the end of August. I'm also off work right now due to the COVID-19 shut-down. So, yeah, doll purchases are not going to be a thing for me for a while (the Euclase wiped out my doll money account but he's worth it).

    8. Well if Euclase was a grail doll - like Azur was for me - then when they come along, you gotta jump on it! Sorry to hear about your job though...:pout:

    9. He wasn't a grail (that would be Mkhai (Impl Miguel The demon Hunter) and Kathiel (Unidoll Ark), both of whom I now own after 7 years of searching) but he's perfect for a character that initially came about from seeing another doll that I wanted to buy but was unable to. I'd wanted Azur for a really long time but I eventually gave up on getting him and switched the character to a different sculpt (DC Clemans). I don't currently have any grails.

Mind you, I SAY buying more dolls isn't going to be a thing for a while but I have an awful habit of eating my words on stuff like that when it comes to the dolls. I could afford to do so without putting myself in financial jeopardy but I'm also cautious in spending on anything (dolls included). I do need to purchase a body and I'd like to do that sooner than later but with the mail being so slow, it makes me a bit hesitant to send out the sample for resin matching.

I enjoy(ed) my job but I'm not mad/upset/sad about not doing it anymore. I'd done the same job at the same place for 20 years. I'm looking at this as an opportunity to maybe do something new or work part-time or some such thing.

    10. Ah I see. Euclase is pretty at least. I'm not sure who my Azur will be...Rick is just glad to have another guy faery to hang with and not get picked on by the girls. (Idrial is constantly up to no good and Nenad is silently sneaky. XD)

Oh I hear you on saying no more and suddenly there is more haha! I thought I was done once I got Glorfindel's head but now I have 3 dolls slowly but surely on their way to me. I bought a 4th one in the interim who is already home. I'm going to have to tell myself "if they can't fit onto this one piece of furniture, we cannot buy them!"

Oooh what company will do resin matching? Glorfindel head needs a body.

I like your positive attitude! I just signed up for a bunch of online professional development. As a school teacher, I am ready for summer vacation after this very messed up year but I'm also worried about next school year.

    11. None of my guys need to worry about getting picked on/harassed by girls as I don't collect girls. It's a sausage-fest in my house. Even my cat is male *lol*.

The body is for Qayin (BiDoll CS head). He's going to go on an RS Mu body. The resin matching is $20 and I'm also going to be getting RS to mod the neck thicker for me (that's an extra $60). Even with those two things, the total for the body before shipping is still only $240 for a brand new SD body with hooves. That's hard to beat.

We're living in weird times right now. But having a positive attitude is the way to go on this in my opinion. I can't do anything to change the situation of the business closing so I need to look forward. I've always wanted more time to write (and I've been enjoying that aspect of my time off so far). I have published novels before but it generally took me a while to get new stuff out there because I had a regular day job. Now my biggest competition for writing time will be Elder Scrolls Online.

    12. Idrial was my first BJD, closely followed by Nenad. Then came my bigger dolls which were both male, then Rick. Then my bigger SD girl, another two SD boys, then an MSD boy, then an MSD girl, a kinda genderless small elf currently dubbed Baby Legolas, some animal BJDs, two nekomata BJDS (one is styled like a boy, the other like a girl), and now I have 2 SD girls on layaway and Azur in "preparing for shipping." I thought I would only have boy dolls but honestly, they are hard to shop for. My girl dolls have far more clothes - even the SD one! But it's not like it's boys versus girls with my dolls. As soon as I can get Glorfindel put together, I plan to do a very inaccurate but totally fun for me retelling of Silmarillion events haha. I had originally intended for my faeries to be the elves and the bigger dolls the god-elves but Elrond had to go and ruin that by being a huge SD boy (no regrets, his face mold was perfect). So maybe my faeries can just be future elves offering Mystery Science Theater like critique. "This is what our ancestors looked like?" "What's with the crazy clothes?" "Isn't that bad guy still working at the movie theater?" etc etc

That's nice they can resin match and thicken the neck. Is that something you had to ask for on their message board because I don't see it just off their menu. The bodies don't look too bad but I would be a little wary of sending any piece of my doll overseas. I guess the head cap? Or a hand? Granted I am just looking for a normal body but resin matching is what has held me up.

It is indeed weird times. Positivity is good. Aaaah yes video games distract me too from what I want to do. But after tomorrow, I am going to try harder to get stuff on my to do list done!

    13. I make 98% of my guys clothes so getting them is only as difficult as finding the time to sew, which can be tough. My Soom Fairies are a bit of a pain to sew for but only due to size and because their outfits need to be able to allow them to wear their wings. I typically make their clothes out of tshirt material (for the thin aspect) or something with a good bit of spandex and wide ribbons.

My collection is wildly varied in size and style. I have 3 different worlds represented. Weirdly enough, all my Soom guys belong in my Divine Worship world, which is about gods and their lovers.

Sleet (Auber Storm Sprite) is partnered with Fei-Lau (God of Winter Storms) and Khale (1/2 Frost Elf, 1/2 Ice Demon). Fei-Lau is a DZ Edward and Khale is a Leeke Khal Vampire. Sleet is a lot of fun to write as he's my little sociopath. Sleet is a former Meadow Fairy turned Herald to Fei-Lau.

Iwa-Xine (Boehm Smoke Sprite) is partner to Skerren (Akhmel Nathan). Iwa-Xine is a Dryad and Skerren is a Fearling, one of the direct Servants to Ondraeden, God of Fear & Nightmares. Skerren is also a quasi-child of Ondraeden and Valerian, who are partners. Ondraeden is a Soom ID51 London the Moor and Valerian is an Iple FID Claude vamp. Iwa-Xine has a sort-of-but-not-really child, Cynara (DZ Little Bean) that was "born" from a bole in his tree.

RS is insanely accommodating. I emailed Sun and asked if what I wanted was possible and how much it would cost me. I think I got a response in about 24 hours. When I was ready to order, COVID-19 had just happened shutting everything down in China so RS asked me to wait to send them the sample. You could certainly send a head cap but I'm actually sending a paint chip sample because I don't feel comfortable sending his head cap since he was a very limited head and the mail system is very slow/backlogged right now.

    14. .____. while I know what head I'm gonna vote for, I'll have to think about the wing and color a bit (or maybe try to gauge what most other people want and use my vote to just help out) because I'm not too pressed about either and would happily accept numerous among the possibilities! We can't abstain from voting on those factors, can we?

The nature of this vote is such that it's possible for the winner to be a combination of head, color and wing that no one person actually picked, lol...

    15. @evilhamster13 Exactly! I really wish they would revert back to the old Free Choice events :(

      • x 2
    16. I'd be happy with three of the girls' wing choices, four of the possible resin choices, but only one of the head choices. It's possible to submit a comment on the event page. Maybe if enough people express interest in the old Free Choice Events, they'll consider reviving them.

    17. Exactly! *_**_**_**_*

      • x 1
    18. I'd be down for the old Free Choice Events too.

      • x 1
    19. I posted a comment that I hope the company bring back the old FCE system. Maybe if enough people express interest they'll consider it.

    20. I think some sculpts may not have genereated enough orders to be worth the trouble. It woul be nice if at least they offered ti top two in the voting.

      • x 2
    21. I feel like they might get more cash from Iplehouse style “doll choice” events.
They could raise the prices on custom dolls and just make it so cancelled dolls go up for auction!

      • x 1
    22. It would be nice to get a doll with Absynthe's wings.... but fantasy colored resin doesn't really work with the theme I have for my faery legend dolls.

I don't know why they stopped doing the FCE events. If there were concerns with some sculpts not being popular enough, why not just do a vote to see which of ten sculpts people want to see, and then offer the top five choices?

I'd actually be willing to buy most of the possible face/wing combinations this time around, unlike the last few events where I just haven't cared about most of them... but any fantasy skin tones would be a complete deal breaker for me. The lack of choice really makes me a lot less likely to buy one.

Edit: well, except for Absynthe. I'm apparently buying Arekushia's Absynthe.

    23. Aww, man. The boy winner ended up being the exact combination I wanted (Rick head, Kremer wings, grey skin). Now I'm going to have to buy one. :|

    24. I am glad I have no dolly money at this time because I'm horribly weak against grey resin. I like that they posted the overall results of the votes and that they said they will use those results for future releases.

      • x 1
    25. I was watching along with interest, I have one doll this size and a kit of a second and I really like them. Mixi was the only girl of the 5 that I am *not* drawn to and I’m not in the market for a doll in grey resin so though Rick is really sweet, the release will be a pass for me...but...with them saying they will be referring to this vote for future releases, Kremer and normal skin were the next most popular choices, just saying. :wiggle

    26. Ooooh! :love Rick is who I voted for and I guess I'll have to buy him too. ;):thumbup

    27. This is an interesting way for them to decide on their next releases  But I'm glad I wasn't interested in any of the ones available to vote for. Super safe.

    28. Absynthe came in second, but I already have a blue doll (even if they call the color light violet) and I'm not too fond of Mixi's wings. Maybe someday they'll make a version of her I like.

    29. @Layn awww lucky! Getting an Absynthe!

I don't like any of the winner combos so I get to pass that up. I'm glad some of you got what you wanted and can buy it though!

    30. I am wondering if the human legs will be available with him. Even without I'll probably get him.

    31. I already have a Mixi. So, no danger there. Sad, I love the wings, but not enough to buy a second Mixi.

    32. Order pages are up!

No faceups/wigs/clothes... pretty bare bones :/ Also they aren’t matching the fairy legs with the wing choices.

Curious how popular this will be.

    33. I might have actually bought this one, given that I just realized the doll I thought was a normal skin Mixi is actually an Aenigma head on a Mixi body.... but I do not need another doll with Mixi feet.

If I had known the feet would correspond with the head, instead of with the wings, my vote would have been completely different. And oh, if only Soom would do a customize feet/wings/head FCE.... I would love a doll with Nyer's head, Rose's feet, and Cylin's wings....

Actually if Soom would do an FCE where you could mix and match any feet, head, or wings, I would probably end up buying several dolls....

    34. Yes I certainly won’t be going for this bizarre combination style event. I’d rather wait and try and get the dolls second hand.

    35. I might not be getting one after all. And it's all because they won't do faceups.
I can't do faceups myself, and it's really hard to find artists to commission in my country. And because of COVID-19, it's not possible to commission someone in another country either.
I don't really feel like spending money on a doll that's going to stay in his box with no face until the pandemic is over.
      Super disappointed.

      • x 1
    36. I am also disappointed with this. I do my own eyes and paintwork but I’m unhappy that the option isn’t there. Also no wigs or accessories!

Really not sure what Soom is aiming for here. Surely it would be better to do a FCE or re-release the full set dolls?

    37. On the one hand I can understand that they can likely get dolls out faster without the face-up/wig/clothes options. But at the same time they've been in the business long enough to know that those options will give them more sales. Perhaps they're testing something out to see how well it works/doesn't work? I'd think that a FCE would be the best option if they wanted to sell the most dolls without having to make new sculpts. If the FCE didn't include face-up/wig/clothes, I think they'd still sell more than going about it this way.

    38. Yeah it's disappointing they aren't offering faceups, both my Metato and Auber have them and they are great. I'm also disappointed they aren't offering human legs. I'm going to sleep on it before I decide to push the buy button.

    39. Heh... Because I've already bugged them about the faceup issue, I'm secretly hoping other people inquire about it too, to maybe push them to do it. It's kind of unfair that they offered faceups for the best choice Sard that was released before, but not these guys. Especially now, when it's impossible to ship things to separate artists.

    40. That might actually be why faceups aren't being offered. If Soom is unable to buy masks for making faceups because masks are being bought up for medical use, they might be completely unable to offer faceups at this time.

      • x 1
    41. They’re offering faceups for their new releases though. I think it’s just the FCE style of release where they don’t do any extras, leaving resources free to focus on the others. :(

      • x 1
    42. It's strange that they have the feet match the head sculpt instead of the wings. Its also annoying that they don't provide any photos of the dolls blank, and that's the only way to order them. I'm not going to order one since I don't like Mixi that much and I already have Rick. (I was trying to switch my Rick's feet for his resin shoes earlier, only to have the shoe fall off and the S hook get stuck inside his leg. I think I can get it unstuck, but he's partly taken apart at the moment.:doh)

      • x 1
    43. Yikes, @Leo Pheonix I hate when that happens.
I think I've talked myself into getting Rick. He and Metato can fly around the garden.

    44. They wouldn't do a face up for my Azur (which I am 100% certain is a warehouse find and they're like hey let's sell this) but they are doing a face up on my Elf Saiph. Soooo...IDK why the larger dolls can get face ups but the smaller dolls can't.

I don't like how they didn't post pictures of blank dolls. Surely they have prototypes somewhere that they could take even a bad photo of for buyers to have an idea.

It's also hard to tell if you're getting the normal legs too or not - that part was confusing for my Azur order too...

@Leo Pheonix I hope you can get the S hook out!

      • x 1
    45. @sailorstarsun If you really REALLY want the exact combo they're offering, I would encourage you to buy it. I know having a doll with no face up SUCKS but I had to deal with that with two of my bigger dolls because of the wait I had for the artist I wanted to do the face ups. I'm going to be in similar situation when my Azur arrives. I know who I want to do it - and I know it won't be cheap - but I know I might have to wait half a year before I can send him off to get painted. I still have a head I want to get painted but I refuse to do so until I get it a body. The pandemic is no help for sure but if your desire for the doll is truly great, I say get it and be patient while we wait for the global mail system to work again. (DHL/FEDEX/UPS must be making bank right now.)

    46. Waiting on doll delivery right now is very trying so I can totally understand not wanting to have a blank doll kicking around for gods only knows how long. I have a doll coming to me 2nd hand and he's been "in transit" from Russia to Canada for 27 days as of today despite being shipped via EMS. Once he finally hits Canadian shores, he'll still need to do the Customs dance and then suffer through the backlog at CANPost to actually come home *sigh*. I have 2 blank heads that currently need painting and I'm going to be sending them to a Canadian artist but because of the delivery backlog, it could take longer than normal to get to her despite staying within Canada so I've held off sending one of them out (the other needs his body first in case some minor blushing needs to happen to match).

I agree with @jessholy . If the sale is what you want, go for it. Soom hasn't been offering all that many of this size of doll recently and they tend to not pop up all that frequently in the MP.

    47. Thanks for the advice. I'm actually pretty mad about the situation, but you're right; it might be even more depressing to miss the opportunity to have him, since he really is exactly what I wanted (minus a face....).
I'll have to think about it some more.
Surely the pandemic will end some day.... right?

      • x 1
    48. It's not impossible to get a doll at a later date that you passed on initially but you might be in for a really long wait. It took me 7 years to finally get my grails, Impl Miguel the Demon Hunter in grey and Unidoll Ark in WS. The Impl was limited to 100 dolls total in multiple resin colours while the Unidoll was not a popular sculpt from a company that folded within a year of Ark being released. They ended up being completely different characters than who they were supposed to be but I'm absolutely fine with that. Both my Soom Fairy boys were MP finds well after they'd been released and the aforementioned doll enroute is also a Soom boy (nearly a full set) from 2012.

    49. At the bottom of the sales the legs are listed
      Mini Gem, Rick
      – Mini Gem Boy Body
      – Rick Basic Head
      – Skin Color : Grey
      – Rick “Bramble” Fairy Leg(Color:White Pearl TR) :thumbup:thumbup:thumbup Even though it shows the black ones
+ Kremer “Slumber” Wing(Color:White Pearl TR)
      + Owner’s Guide
      + Certificate of Authenticity

    50. @SteamWitch Then I would assume that you get a full body doll with additional fairy legs?? Right??

    51. I would say you are right!

    52. I certainly hope so!!!! I'm excited to find out when he arrives.

    53. Well, I did it. I ordered Rick. And at first I wasn't excited at all about it, which was sad, but as the days go by I'm looking more and more forward to having his faceless self hanging around.

I've never had a doll this size before; it's hard for me to grasp just how big (or small) he'll be. The MiniGems take 6mm eyes, right? I saw some and thought 'No way; that's way too small!' Where does one even get wigs for these guys? This is such a whole new world for me. :sweat

    54. Yes, they take 6mm eyes and a size 4 wig.

6mm can be a tough size because they're a total PITA to make (the highest failure rate of eyes I make are 6mm) but Dreaming Tree Studio makes them and she will make custom eyes as well. DTS eyes are a very wallet friendly price. Both my Fairy boys wear DTS eyes. They're a pain to install but nowhere near as much a pain as 4mm or 3mm (I have guys who wear eyes that small and I'm NEVER changing them again). I think Swan Doll makes 6mm as well if you want something that is very similar to Oscar Eyes (now that they're gone *sigh*).

Monique makes size 4 wigs and they fit decently well. Iwa-Xine (Boehm) wears a Monique Pretty Girl in electra. Sleet (Auber) wears a wig I made him. He has his default Soom wig but the darn thing refuses to stay on his head if you so much as look funny in his direction. Jpop carries Monique wigs as well as having some exclusive to them tiny wigs (I'm unsure of the maker of those). I think there's a couple of people on Etsy who will also make wigs that small.

    55. Iron_Dog basically covered it all haha! There's quite a few 6mm eye makers out there - it's just a matter of finding eyes you like and buying them! I know the boys are advertised with oval shaped eyes but their sockets are round I believe so round eyes can go in Rick too. Soom's website says they take 8mm eyes and I think I have that size in their heads but I would have to double check. 6mm and 8mm are the only sizes that truly suit them.

As for wigs, they're like a 3/4 and I am contemplating a Monique one for Azur. Denver Doll sells silicone headcaps that small which might help keep them on - the default Soom wigs are prone to popping off even when I used Volks pitatto velcro strips. I plan to buy some from there and try them out whenever Azur gets in.

As for clothing, believe it or not, Ken doll clothes fit! So most of my faeries are sporting Barbie fashions haha. They also fit into some of the Volks "Who's That Girl?" clothing line which is slowly but surely being discontinued at Volks Japan.

I've heard Azone wigs can fit these dolls but I can't find any small enough for them for sale outside of an actual store in Japan.

Obitsu (aka Parabox) has wigs that small and might have eyes and clothes you might like too! Though for the clothes, they don't have 30cm in height, so I would compare hip/chest/shoulder measurements before buying. They do have an online shop that international buyers can buy from. So you can check them out and maybe make a wishlist since DHL is the only shipping method coming out of Japan atm.

    56. I’ve had a lot of luck finding fun wigs at Denver Doll Emporium that fit. Wound up with quite a few that simply don’t suit my girl :sigh but luckily fit just fine. DDE also sells a 3/4” silicone wig cap which is essential for keeping those wigs on.

    57. Gah! That reminds me that I need two pair of eyes, one for Rick and another for my tiny Granado boy. Wigs I can make, eyes that small are a no go for me. It would be great if they arrived close together.

    58. @Iron_Dog I have a Monique Pretty Girl wig on my Boehm too! Though he's an FCE doll.

I have gotten 6mm glass eyes from Denver Doll and Junky Spot. Some of my dolls have Dreaming Tree Studio eyes, and while the brown and green ones still look fine, a dark blue pair I had turned foggy after a year. I don't know if that usually happens or not,,but it was a bit disappointing.

    59. @Leo Pheonix That's odd about the DTS eyes. A number of my guys wear them and I've not had a problem with any of them. A few of the pairs are 10 years old, too. Perhaps email Amanda about the clouded ones?

    60. Thank you all so much for the information! It gives me a great start on where to look for stuff (since SOOM doesn't seem all that keen on selling necessities for their own dolls.. :| ).

Some sites seem to sell both 3/4 and 4/5 wigs. Do you think either would be ok, or should I really just stick to the 3/4 size?

      Thanks again! <3

(and sorry for all my negativity; I'm just a bit bummed at SOOM at the moment)
