Soom Faery Legend discussion part 4

Apr 30, 2018

    1. I just bought a Monique "Pretty Girl" in white :D So hopefully that'll be just right :) Thanks for the rec!

    2. Glad I could help. You might need a wig cap or something to help it stay on. I put a tiny line of hot glue on the forehead and at the back of his head. I had to do the same with Dolf (Lume Light Blaze, who also wears a size 4) to help their wigs stay on.

    3. If you don't want to use hot glue, you can buy the Pitatto Wig Stopper velcro from VolksUSA. I use that to keep the wigs on my Idrial, Nenad, and Rick. You have to replace it from time to time but one sheet can last you a while. However I find the wigs still like to pop off - well on Nenad at least. So I might try that hot glue trick on Azur.

I'm eyeing the one with that comes with black and blue for him because that might be the closest I get to his full set wig without commissioning someone.

    4. I thought his fullset wig was just black! I didn't realize it was multi-tone. Good luck on finding a nice one :D I think a lot of the Monique ones look really close to a lot of the standard Feary Legend wigs and I'm glad they come in a lot of colors. It took me a while to narrow down my choice to just one.

I have silicone glue I use for cosplay bits that I plan on putting on the inside of the wig cap. Hopefully, that'll keep it in place :D

    5. I smeared silicone caulking on the inside of Sleet's wig (I made it so I wasn't worried about "ruining" it as I'd just make another) and I find it helps a bit in keeping his wig on his head. I have Sleet's default wig from Soom but that refuses to stay on his head.

    6. All my dolls, including my Soom fairies have silicon wig caps in size 4" or 4-5". They help so much in keeping their wigs on their heads, and I'd highly recommend them. Only my Noellia has her fullset wig, and that hardly stays on at all without one.

    7. @Leo Pheonix where did you find the silicon wigcaps in that size?

    8. Denver Doll Emporium sells them. They also have glass eyes in 8mm and 6mm.

    9. @Leo Pheonix Thanks!

I know size 6 and 8 fit in their heads just fine (8mm is what Soom suggested) but what about 10mm? Has anyone used those?

    10. 10mm is too big for my guys. They're both wearing 6mm Dreaming Tree eyes. But that also depends on the eye size/shape of the sculpt in question and I can't speak for the Azur since I don't have one.

    11. I think I'll stick to size 6 and 8 then. I don't want to buy eyes I can't use.

    12. I got a few different size 8mm eyes on the way for Noellia.

    13. @Anneke Yeah I know size 8 fits in them. DDE has some really nice size 8 eyes that I would like for Azur but I want to make sure he actually ships before I buy them.

    14. I got so excited I have to admit I went a little nuts. I got three wigs and three pairs of eyes coming for Noellia, and now the silicone cap too. Her default wig and eyes are lovely but I just wanted to make sure I had some extra choices lol. It’s been so long since I bought doll stuff so I also was taking the chance to learn where to buy stuff again (and in the process got new eyes and wigs for several dolls!)

    15. I have a Noellia and 8mm eyes are a bit too big. They fit, but were shadowed enough that they looked very dark. I have 6mm eyes in all four of my fairies.

    16. I forget which size I have in all of them...I think Nenad or Idrial has the size 6. The other two have size 8. But I am a huge fan of Oscar Doll eyes or something similar so of course I have those in them so no matter what there are eyes are shiny haha. It is interesting how size 6 is better for some but size 8 is listed on the Soom measurement table.

    17. I adore Oscar Eyes, too. A lot of my guys wear them. So sad they closed. If you wanted eyes almost identical to Oscar, Swan Doll: SWAN DOLL makes some and they do make 6mm and 8mm sizes (6mm are currently sold out and colours are VERY limited).

I can make 6mm eyes but holy-moley, they are a PITA to do so and hats off to the companies that make eyes this small or smaller. 6mm are usually the ones with the highest rate of flaws that make them unusable, too (usually big air bubbles) no matter how carefully I drip the resin into the mould.

    18. Yeah, I'm sad they closed too. Their site is even gone so if I decide to part with any of them, I will have to rely on emails to get the color name correct. Oh wow SWAN DOLL has some really nice eyes! Thanks for introducing them!

You're braver than me to make eyes! I tried to commission Sprouty Doll once but that didn't work out and now they don't make eyes? I guess eyes are really difficult!

    19. Oh wow, they have purple ones! Oooh heck I wonder if they will restock any time soon >.>

    20. I did a group order for some friends not long before they closed and I'm super glad I did. There was an event going on (I didn't know at the time) and the free eyes were absolutely perfect for Kathiel (Unidoll Ark) who hated every pair of eyes I tried in his head.

If you're looking for some small Oscar Eyes, Doll Peddlar has some still left in stock.
6mm (pink only): Eye Boutique | 6mm Eyes | Doll Peddlar | Dolls, Clothing and Accessories
They've also got some larger sized Oscar Eyes in stock (no 8mm though) if you're looking for eyes for other dolls in your collection.

Eyes can be tough to make in the smaller sizes in my experience. Once you hit 10mm though, it's not bad. You just need to make sure to go slow when you pour the resin and try to pop any air bubbles before curing (I've had some oops moment where I forgot to do that). I find it fun and creative to make eyes. Although this done mean that I have a LOT of spare eyes now.

    21. I didn't know they had closed until Fabric Friends had moved them to their discontinued page. I would have bought from them directly one last time if I had known...I like to support artists directly if I can.

I did just order a larger pair from them - I had been eyeing for several years actually haha and kept passing it up so here's hoping I like them when they come in! I am not a pink eye person though and that's all that's left for the 6mm.

Spare eyes = a weird art project some time! Like a googly eye monster but not googly haha!

    22. I am SO PUMPED that I am now a proud Faery owner! :dance I'd love to see more of all your faeries to celebrate!

    23. What a lovely girl you have, @Anneke ! An old pic of mine from the day I got my Rick. My Noellia has better eyes now, but the poor girl is still blank.

    24. Ohhh so cute!

Are you still looking for a faceup artists who can work on such a small sculpt in dark resin? I was just thinking how grateful I am that this doll came with her default faceup.

    25. I intend to do it myself. I have the supplies and others that are blank, I just haven't managed to do it.

    26. Ahhh, yes, the never ending Dolly-Do List. Take one item off it as complete and three more fill the space.

    27. @SteamWitch I look his Doc Brown/Albert Einstein hair. His shirt is pretty spiffy too.

    28. This is an awesome look!! So much energy!

    29. My Kremer has definitely aged since having him, what size wig do the guys wear? His default wig from Soom is showing it's age.

    30. Mine wear a 3-4

    31. Thanks for the info, time to order him a new wig.

    32. I'm possibly going to custom order a wig from someone on etsy for Azur's wig but we'll see. I'm just not a fan of bangs on dolls so maybe I will still go with the one Monique wig I liked. Hmmm. He needs to come home first though.

    33. Blunt cut bangs need to be consigned to the deepest pits of hell.

    34. I got a Leekeworld Sissy 3" wig for my girl in "royal lavender". It fits PERFECTLY but it's thin on top and the wig cap is clearly visible through the hair. Super bummed, I really liked this look on her. I put a 3" silicone wig cap on my girl and her default Soom wig (which was definitely too big for her) fits fine now.

    35. I hear ya, my Kremer's wig is showing it's age along with him and he seems sad cause he has aged, but I do love the little guy, I would take a photo of him, but my doggy would think he is a play toy. I wish Soom would make wigs in this size again.

    36. I've found that an issue with several light coloured Leeke wigs I've purchased over the years. I "fixed" the problem with one wig by dying it dark although at the right angle the wefts are still visible. It was an imperfect fix though as the reason I bought it was because it was one of their art wigs & I liked the original colourway of it.

    37. I really love Leeke wigs, most of my dolls wear them! I was surprised to see such shoddy quality come from them :(

    38. I got a Leeke wig in 4-5 for another doll of mine with a similar head size to my fairies, and it's huge. I usually find that size 4 works well for my dolls this size.

    39. I just want a small 3.5-4 wig that doesn't have bangs. I want Azur's default wig so bad.

    40. Monique's "Paris" in off black might be close. That's my Lume Elin has. She's in the middle, with my human body Boehm on the right wearing "Pretty Girl" from the same company.

    42. ooooh but how did you know it was 5 boys and 5 girls? The picture wasn't very telling unless I missed something.
It'll be interesting to see who they offer.

    43. There's a little arrow button on the announcement picture on the right side. Click it and the next pic shows the girls available and the following one shows the boys.

    44. I didn't think I needed any more fairies, but Absynthe may convince me otherwise! I wonder what resin colors will be available?

    45. A green fairy girl would tempt me, price is another factor as well, then comes the waiting for them to arrive.....

    46. Awww they have Idrial and Rick in there (who I already own). Do you think this will be a mix the head with body event or just a full doll event?

    47. I'm guessing since it's called a one pick best choice event that it'll be like the recent best choice for Super Gems and Teenie Gems - with a vote and only the most popular doll will be re-released :(

I really wish they'd bring back regular Free Choice Events...

    48. Oh phooie. I liked the old FCE too. Welp, all we can do is vote right?
I guess if I had to vote for girls: Mixi or Absynthe
And for boys: Labas or Boehm.

But in all honesty, I have all the mini gems I truly love.

    49. The company would sell more dolls with the FCE system than a voting based one. I'm sure a number of people won't buy one at all if it isn't their favorite. It would be nice if "pick one" means you can order which ever one you like, but they won't offer the heads on alternate bodies. Absynthe or maybe Boehm would be the only ones I have any interest in.

    50. @Leo Pheonix Yeah I agree. It's their loss really but I don't know the economics behind it all.

    51. Oooh yay! It’s pretty neat that they’ll offer at least one of them again! Hope they offer fullsets with wigs and outfits, considering how hard it is to find something in the right size.

    52. Boehm is lovely but I'm biased as I have one in green.

    53. What would everyone’s dream release be for the line? An FCE with all skintones, sculpts, and options? Or would you want one in particular?
I would love to get Mute to match my Noellia, but I think I would particularly love more of their costumes being made available!

    54. The event details are up on the Soom Gem site. They will re-release one boy and one girl based on which dolls get the most votes.
I like the FCE system better, as it allowed for customization. I'm hoping for Absynthe in this event.

    55. The wing options are also separate, so you can vote on your favorite sculpt and favorite wings separately.

    56. And they have a lot of different colors to choose from once you pick the mold you like best.
