Soom Faery Legend discussion part 3

Jun 23, 2014

    1. Ooh Zalem your Liriel is gorgeous!

I just re-descovered this Soom line after ages & I am really keen to make a hybrid with one.
Does anyone have a DC kid doll they could test a fairy head on?
I'd really like to mix them :)

    2. The Soom site says the boy neck is 5.5cm and the girls are 4cm. You'll need to check the DC site for which head you fancy as they have a couple of different bodies in the Kid line that have different neck sizes. Depending on the aesthetic you're after, it could work with some modding but be advised that the fairy heads take a size 4 wig and might be pin-headed on the DC body.

    3. I am not sure if I already asked this here but I recently took my faeries out for a photo shoot in the woods and they were kicking their legs something fierce! How do I correct this? I'm talking about them somehow twisting their entire lower leg around and just flopping into a sitting position - I can straighten their legs out for a moment but the second I let go, they just...crouch and turn their legs. Is it the elastic? Is it too tense? Too loose? How do I restring them?

    4. Maybe sueding might help? Or wiring? My fairy does get a little kicky these days. But he's kind of old so maybe he needs to be restrung.

Speaking of my fairy, he got a new faceup recently along with new eyes!

Now I just need a better wig and a proper fairy-like outfit. These seem the hardest to do. I'd love to get a long, flowing white wig but finding one in his size is a bit of a pain. And the clothes, gah. If you want to dress them in modern clothes that's probably easy enough but finding good fantasy style clothing that suits a fairy is much harder.

    5. I end up making my guys stuff because there just isn't any place that makes what they need. I use mostly ribbon, trim and very thin tshirt material to make their outfits.

    6. @zalem Oh your guy is very handsome! I love that face-up. I want to get my guy a new wig too. But yea, the choices seem slim. What eyes did you put in him?

    7. Monique makes wigs that fit these guys and they're quite nice. I have a wig cap under Iwa-Xine's and actually put a little line of hot glue at his forehead and nape of the neck to keep it in place. Sleet's wig is one I made for him. I coated the inside of that wig with clear caulking to help it stay on his head.

    8. I can't find a long monique wig that is pure white though. :( Maybe I need to start learning how to make wigs lol. He would only need a very small one.

    9. You might need to give a little on the level of white if you want a pre-made wig in this size. Bleach blonde or silvery white could be options. The following come in white blonde:
      Ginger: Ginger
      Paris: Paris
      Pixie: Pixie
      Pretty Girl: Pretty Girl

And Trix comes in snow white: Trix

    10. Thanks! He has 8mm Oscar Doll eyes. I really love them. Much better than the crappy acrylic eyes he had before.

Hmmm, I'm not really willing to give on the white. His skin tone doesn't really look good with blonde (even a very light one) imho. Don't really want bangs either. But thanks for the suggestions. I did notice on their site the style "adorabel" has a fairy blue and it's just the right style. Might attempt that, though I worry that he'll be a bit too blue. lol.

    11. @zalem

Oh he's pretty, what mold and skin tone is he?

    12. I have an old blue RS Jun and he wears a light blue wig and has blue eyes (I have a monochrom thing). Blue on blue can work but I found that if the blue of his wig was too many shades darker than his resin, it made it appear that he wasn't blue resin. The wig colour overpowered his resin colour. The RS old blue is very, very pale to the point when he's by himself, it could be mistaken for a dingy white or a cool grey regardless of the wig he was wearing. He has mellowed though (he's 8 years old) and he's now a lovely pale turquoise.

    13. My "light violet" Juchy, who is actually light blue has a silver white 'James' wig made by Monique. It's whiter than it looks in the picture. Its short though, so I don't know if that helps.

    14. Your Juchy is cute! Pls post more pictures of her if you have :D

    15. Thanks. He is a Crow in snow blue skin tone. :)

    16. Finally showing off my frost-sprite Loki! (or Jack Frost, he likes to change his name whenever it suits him)

He is a Cream-white Auber. I have airbrushed him white with a light coat of pearl-powder for that ice-like simmer with blue blushing, it's not that even but I'm satisfied with it. In order to keep the paint and blush from chipping in the joints, I had sprayed a few coats of clear spray-able polyurethane coating.
And I had also coated the inside of the ball joints with silicone glue. (Same principle as hotglue suading.)

His horns are self casted clear resin with just a tiny bit of pear-powder to make them look like icicles. They are attached to a custom-made wig of black mohair.
His eyes are D.Eye.Y bases in 8mm no pupil, painted light blue with irredisent glitter.

      Whew!

I hope that you guys like him. :sweat

    17. I like the faint blue tones to him. Subtle yet noticeable.

    18. He is awesome! i am so amazed you did the customization completely by yourself and gave him such a nice look!

    19. He's BEAUTIFUL! I am completely in love, you did a great job!

    20. Yay for faceups!! My Sitri has a chest tattoo and some hand nonsense, but I truly salute anyone doing ANY of it! They're so small... Smaller features even than my other mature 1/6s.

    21. I am enjoying everyone's pics of their faeries!!!

    22. Does anyone know of any good Etsy shops or somewhere that might sell clothes for these guys? Fantasy outfits, especially. My poor Mute has been nekkid since I received him in a trade, but Ken clothes just donโ€™t cut it for him. I did have a pattern to make pants but I need to redraft it or something. The original is all wrinkled. But the pants I made my Metato actually turned out pretty decent, considering I never tried to sew doll clothes before. lol

    23. I don't know of any off hand. They're sort of a weird size to shop for since they're tinies but mature. And if you want to be able to have their wings on them while clothed, that's a whole new level of frustration. I make my guys outfits out of ribbons, trim and very thin, stretchy tshirt material. I'll also buy XL men's boxer briefs from the Dollar Store since that fabric is just the right thickness and stretch for making slim fitting pants for them. Fabric colour is generally limited (light/dark blue, black, white & grey) but for that price, you really can't go too wrong and you'll have enough fabric to make several pairs of pants.

    24. Thatโ€™s an idea. The pants I made for Eros are out of white velvet. The waist ties shut with ribbon and the legs are open (although they can also be closed with ribbon wrapped around them). Itโ€™s a pretty simple pattern. Just a lot of hand-sewing since I hemmed the edges. I think I have some fabric in my stash but Iโ€™m not sure how well I can sew it by hand since itโ€™s pretty silky. But it would work well for small dolls since itโ€™s thin. One of these days Iโ€™ll get up the nerve to try and sew another pair of pants. They donโ€™t even need shirts, just something to cover their bits. XD

    25. @Stormlight

I bought an outfit that I love from an Etsy Shop called "Model Doll". It's really well made. Maybe she can be convinced to make more?

    26. @Stormlight I hand sew everything I make for my guys from my tinies to my 70cm boys. Yes, it's more time consuming, but I find it's easier with the tinies since the seams in general are pretty small to start with.

@brightberry Thanks for the link. She makes Vito sized stuff, too, and I've got one coming to me (whenever SD gets around to finally sending him *rolls eyes*) so it's nice to find someplace that makes their weird in-between size.

    27. I make most of my dolls' clothes with 11 1/2" doll size patterns. I have to adjust the fit of some of the clothes, since Soom fairies are taller and slimmer than the Barbie and Ken dolls the patterns were made for. I do most of the sewing with a sewing machine because it's faster and looks so much neater than my hand sewing.

    28. Therein lies my problem. I donโ€™t have a good machine and no room to put one. Hand-sewing it is! :)

    29. Hand sewing isn't so bad! My stitches aren't very neat personally, but there's no cure for that but practice... It's slow but soothing I think.

    30. I frequently sew while watching something. I find it relaxing for the most part.

    31. I can't hand sew for crap or use a sewing machine, so I'm doomed. lol.

    32. I've gotten better at sewing making things for my dolls since I got them. Here's my current group-

    33. Oh I love them!! Did you make the shoes on the blue/purple girl??

    34. I really like the outfits you made for your dolls!

    35. Thanks! The shoes my blue girl is wearing were made by Ruby Red Galleria, ordered from Denver Doll. She's actually a light violet Juchy- but she's blue.

    36. @Leo Pheonix Ohhhh they're really cute! I've looked at the RRG shoes but I'm never sure if they'll look to broad... Thanks!
