Soft Angel In Progress - Help?

Aug 19, 2020

    1. Hello! I’m brand spanking new to the hobby-but I’m very interested in getting into making dolls and selling them in the future once I’ve finished some personal projects. The first one I wanted to try was my charector Anne on Toyhouse (you can see her artwork that I’m working off of there, made by the OG creator).

i want her to have a softer, chubby-er sculpt with medium breasts. I’ve never in my life tried anything like this, but I sketched out some ideas that look-decent? I’m also looking for her to either have a small open mouth, or a tiny smile. Her eyes aren’t what I’m reallt planning-I want them rounder but not /that/ round. It’s really just a concept sketch so far.

      Sketches:
      Anne on Toyhouse
      and
      Anne on Toyhouse

Beyond that-I wanted to ask do these sketches look alright? And what program(s) would you recommend? I use mobile, but I’ll just borrow a computer from a family member. (+I own a chromebook).

    2. Hi Nyx,

I really like your sketches so far :) In particular, the two 3/4 angles look very interesting.

Personally, I find her stomach/abdomen section to be a bit non-existent.
I'm getting this impression mainly from the frontal sketch so maybe its just a bit of inconsistency in the sketches.
Of course, this could also just be a stylistic choice you made.

In my opinion those are more like large breasts instead of medium. But it's a bit subjective anyways haha.
However, the boob placement does look a bit off in the frontal sketch. They seem oddly spaced out to me.

You may also want to move the eyes closer together so that they aren't touching the edge of her face.
Anatomically I don't think this makes sense because of the skull's shape.
How they end up looking will ultimately depend on the final eye shape though.

I also have no idea in regards to making a doll so I won't be able to comment on that aspect.

    3. Woah!! Those sketches are adorable! I love the idea of a softer sculpt. I want to try something like that myself actually. I don't have any advice either since I'm also just aspiring right now; I just wanted to comment that I LOVE your idea and think it's super cute! I'm really interested.

    4. The sketches on the joints make the breasts look much bigger than the drawing of said girl. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not, but even as a large-breasted woman myself I find those breasts (on the doll drawings) to be a bit on the large size. Most people seem to sculpt in zBrush, but I can't say much about the program as any sculpting I've done is by hand. As someone else mentioned, I'd also take a look at the eye placement, because as of right now she might come off looking more like a lizard than an angel. Her eyes seem very close to the side of her head and I would worry about that while sculpting, although I'm sure it will be easier to correct once you're working in a 3D medium.
