SOCK It To Me! (Or other weird, tacky, or just plain ??! clothing sources!)

Nov 17, 2010

    1. Ok, that lengthy discussion thread on the merits (or anti-merits) of tawdry, minimialist, "lazy", sock clothing has got me yearning to see more, more, I tell you! So let's connive and share pix of bad, odd, or crappily-constructed clothing made of socks, garbage bags, stockings, gum wrappers, whatever oddness struck your fancy -- heck, someone in the discussion even mentioned bacon strips (be there anyone here so daring...?)!

      Anyone want to start?

Both his shirt and leggings (don't know if you can see them at all in this shot) are-- SHH!-- made out of panties. Huge granny panties, fresh out of the package, never worn. It's a great way to get a small print on lightweight fabric... (the leggings are plain white, but they were originally just meant to keep dark pants from staining his legs before I sprayed him...)

    20. Ok me and a couple of other people from the BBB/RS discussion thread, had a read and a good laugh at the famous Sock Dress Debate -> http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...k-dresses-and-the-anger-they-seem-to-generate. The more we read the more we wanted to put our dolls in "Sock Dresses" and other cute things made from socks!

Why the game? Well i want people to join the so called "Sock Perpetrators" and post your dolls wearing the dreaded infamous "Sock Dresses" and things made out of socks. Anything like that! I will start it off with my attempts. If you want to talk a little about your photo's go for it, if you don't want to it is fine!

    30. I've heard before that sock clothing is "frowned upon" and that makes me a little sad. I think that sock clothing is a good place for beginners to start off. I can hardly sew for jack squat, and I'm a pretty broke High school student at the moment, so sock clothing is a good option for me since i just don't have the kind of money to buy nice outfits for my doll. I don't see what people are talking about when they say sock clothes just can't be good. Some people use the argument that most sock dresses aren't good because they're made out of "old sweaty socks", and I don't see the harm in using cleaned used socks.Although I admit that here I went out and bought a set of colored and patterned socks to make clothes for her since i only had ugly plain white socks. (I have a cute little diamond patterned sock [the kind of diamond pattern you see on sweaters] that i want to make a sweater out of for her sometime once i figure out how to do that...) The two outfits my girl has are (although incomplete) nice looking and functional.

This was the first outfit I made for her, this was the first time i'd really ever sewn anything:
everything is made out of socks, even the scarf! this outfit's still incomplete though, I'm hoping to find some dark brown tights and black shoes for it, and possibly a little necklace.

The Second outfit I made is also still incomplete, I'm hoping i'll get okay enough at sewing to sew her an orange/yellow-orangey cardigan for it:
This was when i first made it, I have since added a little bit of golden colored ribbon tied in a bow under the bust to give the dress a bit of a shape.

i love all the cute clothes here! <3

    32. I make most of my things from fabric scraps or things that used to be something else... These ones aren't that strange, but I'll put them out here anyway. First up is- a shirt that became a top!

I just loved the hand and the text is almost perfect. :D I still have the second hand print lying around somewhere so theoretically I could make another one...

Next up we have the sleeve that became a dress!

It's sitting a bit low on her chest in these pictures, but I haven't got any other pictures of it atm... It actually does go all the way to her ankles, the pose just makes it seem very short. It's not meant to be anything fancy, but more of a comfy dress that you would wear at home when no one's around. I'm sure we all have clothes that we would not wear in public, and this would be one of those! ;D

Opalwhisker- it really is a shame, as it is an excellent place to start, and it recycles old materials into something new, which is just great! That's why I tend to save old clothes that I don't want to wear anymore, as I know I can use them to make something for my little ones! And to be honest, sometimes used clothes are slightly nicer to work with as they are already a bit worn out, so making clothes with them is a weensy bit easier. :3

    40. I've been interested so much in collecting dolls that I haven't taken the next step very far, developing their personalities and wardrobes. So, yeah, my resin troupe often arrives at our meets very thrown together or minimally covered. I'm still so fascinated by how their bodies work, I enjoy them ala - resin? in doll birthday suites mostly.
So here a couple of t-shirt sleeve dresses, and a crazy outfit we put together so my dollzone boy could participate in the photo shoot:

    46. I won't bother with a picture since there's nothing exciting about a blank doll with a sock stuck on her head, but I do have a story about it...

So my newest addition to my resin family REFUSES to sit up on flat surfaces on her butt, because of the way her thigh joints are. Plus she's tightly strung in addition to being wobbly, so she throws herself back quite often when i'm trying to get her into sitting positions. So in order to slightly protect against any potential damage caused by wild flailing, and so that I could prop her up against the wall without fear of the paint sticking to/staining her head, I cut the toe off a sock and put it on her head... right as I was setting her back up with her new sock hat my dad walked in which made me crack up because here I was awkwardly struggling to get her to sit against the wall with a sock stuck on her head and he was like "what are you gigglin' about" and I had to explain that I put a sock on her head.

Needless to say he thought it was pretty funny that I was giggling over her sock head.
