Contest Sock Couture Contest (Sewing)

Jun 29, 2009

    1. NOTE: Due to the fact that several sites are advertising our contests, we have had some people joining just to enter our contests. We don't feel that this is fair to our current members. If you joined after July 6th, you may not enter the sewing contest.

The long-running joke is that people are tired of seeing ugly dolls in sock dresses. Let's change that - let's see some gorgeous dolls in sock-derived clothing!

      Description and Rules:

Entrants must create an entire outfit (for a male or female doll) using only commercially-made socks. The socks may be conventional ankle socks, knee-socks, trouser socks, or nylons.

There is no restriction on theme.

Embellishments such as beads, buttons, and sequins are permitted, but no other textiles (such as lace or ribbon) may be used. Obviously use of thread, elastic, and other notions is allowed.

The design must be your own; no team entries (designer + seamstress or tailor) or use of outside patterns.

We permit and encourage the use of advanced sewing and textile skills (such as embroidery), though we do not allow techniques that create new fabrics (such as knitting or crocheting).

      How to enter

Each member may enter ONE design.

Please send photos of your completed outfit to Truffle. You must put a note in the subject of the PM stating that the entry is for the Sock Couture contest.

You may send up to 4 views, each a maximum of 400x600 px (orientation of portrait or landscape is not important). One of these views MUST be a full view. The format must be .GIF or .JPG.

Please include a listing of the types of socks and how they were used. If there is anything else that you would like us to know (the number of beads you painstakingly sewed on, that the outfit is reversible, that the bodice is lined, that your husband hasn't even noticed the sock is missing yet, etc.), please include that in the PM.

There should be no personally identifying information on the photos - no name, username, email, or watermark.

Do not post your design elsewhere prior to completion of voting; doing so will remove your entry from the contest. As with the winter contests, we wish for the entries to be anonymous in order to make voting more fair.

This contest is open to all DoA members and Moderation Staff.

Entries must be received by August 10th.

      Voting

Entries will be posted on DoA on August 21st for voting. Voting will run from August 21st to August 28th.

The winner will be decided by member vote via PM. In the event of a tie, Armeleia will cast the deciding vote.

      Prizes

The creator of the entry with the most votes will receive a new, unpainted Puki Fee Ante, generously donated to Den of Angels by Fairyland.

The second and third-place winners will receive a PM box upgrade. If they have a commission thread or website, they may substitute a month of free advertising in the upper right corner of the forum. (Ad must be approved by DoA Staff.)

All entrants will receive a graphic badge for their signatures.

The first prize will be sent to the winner by the end of August, barring complications. Please note that the winner is responsible for postage.

CLARIFICATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN POSTED THROUGHOUT THE THREAD

      1. Embellishments such as beads, buttons, and sequins are all right. CLOTH OR TEXTILE embellishments such as ribbon, lace, or yarn are not.

      2. Lace and ribbon are all right if they are attached to one of the socks that you are using. If your outfit seems to have a lot of this, you may want to take before and after pictures to prove that the lace is from a sock.

      3. You may use socks, pantyhose, tights, fishnets, thigh-highs. You may not use gloves, mittens, footless tights, shoes, slippers, or other clothing.

      4. The outfit must be modeled on an on-topic doll. We don't care if you own the model or not.

    2. This sounds like so much fun. I laughed out loud when I read the rules.

      :D

    3. Question: if the original sock contained lace or ribbon trim is it allowable in the dress design?

    4. brennil, I'm glad you like it... I hope you'll enter!

jayyne, as long as it is part of the original sock, it is admissible. (You just can't go buy a spool of ribbon or lace and use that).

    5. Are socks with patterns like flowers allowed? And are you permitted to sew on snaps or other types of fasteners?

    6. Since embroidery is allowed, does it matter if it's machine embroidery, or by hand?

    7. oh man, i so have to try this! It sounds like so much fun =D

    8. i want to try as well :)

    9. Thread, clasps, snaps, elastic, beads, sequins, etc. are allowed. You can use any kind of sock that you'd like - thin trouser socks, thick crew socks, fuzzy socks, nylons, etc. If you can find socks with patterns or prints, that's fine too.

Hand or machine embroidery is fine.

    10. Can we use a few pairs of socks for one outfit?

    11. You can use as many pairs of socks as you want. :)

    12. Wow! This is great. This will be a fun thing to do with my first BJD. She is due to arrive in a couple days. Oh boy!

    13. If we are using just plain white socks would we be allowed to use a dye? Say I make a big dress from white ankle socks could I dye parts of it different colors? Like a burgundy bottom, black corset style center and white sleeves or something?

    14. Are we allowed to participate even if we do not have a doll? I have a doll form I created and was wondering if that was allowed to umm.. photograph the outfit on?

Also, an entire outfit, does that also mean accessories as well?

      Thank you! :)

    15. Maybe I'll try it. I already have an idea or two for garments.

    16. Is it allowed to use accessories to complete the outfit made with the socks and accessories with beads, that will go on the outfit ?

      Thank you ^-^

    17. Oh, I am so in on this. *brainstorms*

    18. This sounds like so much fun , I need to Subscribe to this one :)

    19. This cracks me up entirely! :-D

    20. This is awesome :D I already have an idea as to an outfit, I just lack my doll lol
I hope she is here before August 10th :S

      ~Mark

    21. I feel the need to join this contest... except I just threw out a whole bag of socks. XP

I shall keep an eye on this thread though! :D SOCK POWER!!!!!!

And another question. By 'email' does it mean send an email or a PM?
Cause Truffle only has PMs for contacting...

    22. Sorry, I've fixed it. We meant "by PM." Thank goodness the rotten puppy doesn't have email!

    23. This has inspired me to create something with socks, but don't think I'd be able to enter, seeing as I lack a doll, and a digi cam. Can't wait to see the results for voting though, and see what people come up with. Good Luck to all that are participating too. :D

    24. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what exactly do you mean by "nylons"? Possibly a language barrier, but when I think of nylons I think of "pantyhose". Are we allowed to use pantyhose? What about knee-hi's and thigh-hi's?

    25. I'm really hating the one entry per person thing. Have so many ideas....:mwahaha
      ok so is boning allowed?

    26. Yes, pantyhose. Those crazy New York to Indiana language barriers! ;) (Seriously, dialects are crazy). You can use knee-highs, thigh-highs, pantyhose, etc.

Boning is fine; I think we'd consider it in the same category as elastic.

    27. LOL, thanks Armeleia! A lot of us midwesterners talk like we're in a 1950's time warp, so I had to ask. :sweat

    28. If we can use nylons would it also be okay if we used materials like colored tights?

    29. WOA!:o i am, as we speak, in the middle of making a sock outfit for my doll! and Ante is on my wish list!! yay!:fangirl:

    30. Do the photographs have to be of the outfit being worn by a doll? Or can you put them on one of those artists maniquin thingys instead? :D

    31. Yes, colored tights would definitely fall under the 'nylons' category. :)

And I'm sorry, but the outfit must be shown on a doll to show that it is in scale with BJD proportions and that it is a viable outfit.

    32. This sounds like such a fun and funny contest. If my doll arrives in a timely manner i think i'm going to have to try :). Though it's been many years since i've sewn socks.

    33. This sounds fun! I may enter, I just need to find time to do it.

    34. I had a good laugh when I saw this contest and am seriously hoping I can get a new camera or highjack someone's so I may enter.......now to find all those old socks.

    35. Hosiery ahoy!!

Hey, I haven't humiliated my boy Pietr in awhile, I wonder if I can make a "manly man" dress out of socks...

    36. Ha, yes! I used to make all sorts of outfits for my dolls and beanie babies out of socks when I was kid! This is gonna be awesome, count me in. :)

    37. Wow, this seems like a lot of fun! Best of all, it's affordable, so everyone can join ^_^ Since I just learned how to sew, more or less, I'm going to give this a try!

    38. I was wondering if I could ehm, borrow my friend's doll to dress since mine won't be here soon enough?
      :apirate:

    39. I was thinking the same thing.....If I can make things for my boys with socks.....although the real challenge would be on my SD Raphael.

    40. Again, I an wanting to know by what time on August 10?

    41. could she barrow a doll from someone else local to her?

    42. I have so many ideas in my head I better get started. I've never used socks before, but it looks easy. What a great way to use those single socks we all have laying around.

    43. Dude. I just started a sock outfit yesterday. Are you people mind readers? :o

    44. Oh please tell me that we are going to be able to see all the entries at some point. This sounds absolutely awesome, it really does.

    45. As long as they meet the guidelines, all entries will go up for voting.

    46. This is a really cool contest! I often make clothing for my boys out of socks.
There is a good selection of socks at the dollar store...
      :-)

    47. I gotta try this. LOL. Thanks for the idea. ^^

    48. This sounds seriously great - I'll be all over this!!

    49. are we allowed to dye the socks?

    50. Are additional 'accessories' allowed - such as shoes or glasses - or must everything the doll is wearing be made from socks? Does the doll's face need to be blocked in any manner/edited/creatively photographed out for voting (I know there are quite a few dolls I can recognize by looks - not saying this is a bad thing but just asking to know...)?

    51. Dying socks is perfectly acceptable. We encourage the use of advanced textile techniques, as said in the rules.

To make this extra challenging, any accessories must also be made of socks. Shoes may be regular doll shoes. However, the point of the contest is not the accessories; we're more concerned with the outfit, and will ask that the entries be judged on their sockiness.

The faces of dolls do not need to be edited out for voting. We understand that many dolls are recognizable, but hope that members will be fair and vote for their favorites, not just their friends. ;)

    52. As for the "sockiness" of the outfit, does that mean it has to be extremely obvious that it was made out of socks, or is it okay if everything came from socks but isnt particularly obvious? I just wanna have a complete grasp on the concept before i start thinking up crazy ideas XD

    53. This is so great! And I just started seriously looking at the puki fees too! hmmm, I think it is time to do some sock shopping...

Too bad none of the sock clothes I have made so far meet the criteria (I'm a sucker for ribbons and lace).

    54. I am so doing this :XD: Thanks for the great idea!

    55. (giggles and claps hands like a child) This is fantastic! I will definitely have to enter this!
      :D

    56. This is amazing and Fairyland is so generous!!

It would be super fun to see everyone else's designs. Hopefully my girl comes soon. She is into FRUiTS fashion so she loves things that are all collaberated!

      Good luck to all entrants!

    57. I'm confused: if we are not allowed to post the images, how do we PM them? Are we just not allowed to post them on DoA, is that it? Or am I just dumb? XD

    58. This is very funny, I'm in!

    59. I can't wait to enter this LOL I just bought a big bag of black socks from the store the other day, and realized i don't need them LMAO. I guess i'll be using them for a sock outfit. Ironically, i don't think i've ever put a sock on my doll LOL

    60. Wow, I've just been overwhelmed by an avalanche of ideas... now let's see if my sewing skills can keep up :eusa_pray
