Materials so i got my clay

May 17, 2011

    1. and have some tools needed to start making a doll.
but when ive made the doll, should i use anything to spray the clay with?
some sort of primer or sealer or whatever?
      i have ladoll premix.

i've looked at other works in progress, and their dolls looks so shiny at the end, so im thinkign they use some kind of thing to spray it with, but i cant really find out what, so thats why im asking.

    2. first you shouldnt worry about what to seal your doll with when your just starting to make a bjd, thats like one of the last things you need to worry about. Your in for a long road. For primer i recommend car primer, ive read it works the best. For a sealer im not sure, i think shellac will do just fine. It also depends on what type of finish you want, If you prefer a matt finish or shiny. After you spray the shellac you still have to sand it and polish to make it nice and shiny ;) im not sure if you need to sand it after spraying shellac but this is just info ive gathered from research.

    3. yeah i know, but since i live in a rural place i have to get it from the web, and that takes some time- thats why i want to get everything in palce as soon as possible.

that being said, i couldnt wait anymore- so i started my first bjd!! o_O
its not looking quite horrible ...yet. ill take some pictures and stuff later=)

btw. since english isnt my native laguage i tend to struggle a bit when it comes to new topics for me,..like bjds and how to make em.
i really dont udnerstand what the difference in primer and sealant is. i just picked up those words form somewhere in here.

    4. ok ^_^ primer is the stuff they spray on cars before they paint it, it allows the paint to stick to the object and not peel off when its dry. Primer is color gray and needs to be sanded to get it smooth. You only need to use primer for when your done sculpting, then you spray with primer, then sand away. The primer will let you see all the little mistakes that you dont notice in the sculpt, so just sand it away until its smooth and even.

Sealant is sprayed after the object has been painted or it is completely done. Sealant will seal the object so that it protects the paint or sculpture from stuff like scratches and water and also makes it shiny if you sand and polish.

You dont want to spray sealant at all unless your sculpture is completely done, because then it will be covered in a layer of sealant and you cant paint over it, it will look bad.

If your buying primer get car primer, if your buying sealant and want a shiny finish get shellac and make sure it doesnt say the word matt on it. Matt means it will seal the object but it will not make it shiny.

    5. ok, thanks.

i have something called acryl spray/ spray putty. (its grey)
it says of the box its used to fill and cover uneven surfaces/ scratches etc.
is this the same thing as primer, or are they two completley different things? can it be used instead of primer?

cause from the description it sounds the same,...but it says on the box aswell that this is to be used before priming/ and or topcoating.

    6. marita it sounds like the right stuff, I think the description on the box refers to how you would use it if applying it to a car, where you definitely would put another primer and then topcoat over the top. Just make sure it is an aerosol can, because you can also get another filler for car bodies, which comes in a paint-can, and you buy the hardner separately in a tube, mix it up and get a thick and very smelly (fast setting) putty ~ this you do not want for your dollmaking!!

But for dollmaking you just need the "cover uneven surfaces" qualities, so do a couple of coats and then sand with 400 grit wet sandpaper. Make sure you have sanded the surface to 120 grit dry and then possibly 240 grit before applying the primer/putty.
