      18 sts/inch
      22 rows/inch (row gauge is not essential)

      U.S. size #0000/1.25mm/U.K. size 18 needles or any size needles that achieve gauge
      Sulky Cotton Petites size 12 thread

      Abbreviations:
      BO – bind off
      CO- cast on
      incr – increase
      k – knit
      p - purl
      PSSO – pass slipped stitch over
      st - stitch(es)
      YO – yarn over (making an increase)

      Starting at neck edge:
      Cast on 37 sts using long-tail cast on, leaving a long thread end for a button loop.
      K 2 rows.
      (P1, k1) twice, p3, BO 8 sts in k st, p7, BO 8 sts in k st, p3, (k1,p1) twice.
      Note: The st remaining on the right-hand needle after binding off is included in the p7 and p3.
      (K1, p1) twice, k3, CO 2 sts, k1, incr in each of the next 4 sts, k2, CO 2 sts, k3, (p1, k1) twice. (29 sts)

      Wrong-side row: (P1, k1) twice, p across to last 4 sts, (k1, p1) twice.
      Right-side row: (K1, p1) twice, k across to last 4 sts, (p1, k1) twice.

      Work wrong-side row.
      (K1, p1) twice, incr in each st until last 5 sts, k1, (p1, k1) twice. (49 sts)
      Work wrong-side row.

      If a fuller skirt is desired as shown at right in photo, work (k1, p1) twice, (k1, incr in next st) repeat to last 4 sts, (k1, p1) twice. Otherwise, work right-side row.

      Repeat wrong-side and right-side rows until piece is about 1 and 1/8 inches from cast-on edge.

      Work picot row: k2, YO, (slip 1, k1, PSSO)*, repeat to last st, k1.
      P 1 row. K 1 row. P 1 row.
      Bind off in k st.
      Block dress.
      Hem dress, folding back hem at picot edge and sew back seam starting at hem edge for about 0.5 inch.
      Sew button to back neck edge. Make button loop to fit button. Weave in ends.

      Note: Consider adding colorwork to this dress as pictured or fancy stitches to the skirt to make your knitting unique.
