Technique Sleepy dolls poses

Aug 31, 2023

    1. Hello,

I am a fan of dolls with closed eyes but I have always had the same problem when photographing them, I don't know how to pose them.

I like to play with the direction of the eye with my open-eyed dolls, which gives me a lot of playfulness when posing. But when it's the turn of my dolls with closed eyes I can't think of anything else to do but to put them resting or chilling.

(Milo modelling my incompetence with him)

What poses or resources do you use for your sleepy dolls?

      Thank you!

    2. I'll agree that it's more difficult to think about, I usually like to think about statues and paintings as inspiration, as there are a lot with closed eyes.

I think it also helps me too to think of channeling different emotions where someone would have their eyes closed, e.g. downcast, sleepy, dreaming

Your doll is beautiful by the way, it's nice to see him.

    3. I have not photographed mine with their sleeping/closed eye faces yet but I think feeling the music like your second photo is really nice. Besides sleeping I was thinking of poses for mine like smelling flowers, meditation or prayer, yoga, kissing, or turning their face up to feel the sun. Milo looks like he is waiting for a kiss in your third photo, so cute :XD:

    4. Thank you! Your photos and your doll are gorgeous. I need to figure out what Milo can be doing. He loves music so perhaps I should get him a guitar. I used to look at sculptures and paintings as a source of inspiration but I kinda of stopped doing it (I don't know why) Thanks for your input!

    5. Thank you! He loves music so I shall start working on situations where he can be enjoying it. I loved your comment about the kiss! So cute! Thanks!

    6. The replies above have given great suggestions, and I also like your photos! Your Milo looks relaxed and content, taking in the nature around him :3nodding:

I'm still new and have zero photography skills, but I took this photo of my boy fresh out of the box and I really like it. Please excuse the nudity and blankness :XD:

I've always found side sleeping poses like this wonderfully alluring if you wish to photograph your doll in that way. Also if you have another doll, it's possible to create some very tender romantic moments with the sleeping heads. I'm not able to do that at the moment but when I do, you can be sure that I'll be first thing I do :chibi

EDIT: Added spoiler tags just in case.

    7. I've seen several times where people have used the combination of close eyed doll, photographed from a high angle/with a lowered head and a prop of some kind, such as a book or a letter, something that you expect the doll to be looking at, in the right position.
Because of the angle ther is no way of telling for sure if the eye is fully closed or if the doll is just looking down and the prop makes the viewer assume that the doll is reading. I've caught myself looking at images using this trick without even realizing that it's a close eyed doll. Very useful trick.

    8. I just thought of another one I’m going to try. Hugging another doll or pet, think of when you embrace someone and close your eyes in happiness
