Discussion Silly Newbie Antics

Aug 7, 2009

    1. Remember when you were brand new and you didn't know a Megu from a Sooah? Remember when LE BW CP EL was just a jumbled code rather than a quick title heading in the Marketplace that made you think, "Oh, nifty! That limited El was gorgeous in white skin"? When the term 'body brushing' made you sort of quiver in fear and wonder if this really was the hobby for you?

And don't even pretend you haven't been there!

This thread is for you to dig back through your own posts and find the silliest post you made as a newbie on DoA. If you can find it, link it here. If not, feel free to describe it. I'm a newbie puppy myself, though I must say that my posts on DoA have all been pretty epic. However, everyone else has one or two of those posts that makes one wince now.

Let's wince and giggle together! This isn't to make fun of everyone, just a quick trip down memory lane to the funny mistakes we've all made. As I said, we've all been there! Embrace your inner newbie and relive the days when you just weren't quite sure how big your incoming doll would be compared to a bottle of Coke.

      Have fun!

    2. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=222174

That was my first ever thread and post. xD I was so confused and thought that dollfies were the same thing as BJDs... And to make matters worse, I'd never been on a forum before! I didn't know how to do anything! I had no idea what a sticky was, or anything.

    3. I've made plenty of huge mistakes on forums, and this one isn't really that bad in comparison, but it is my dumbest newbie moment for this forum in particular.

      How U Mine 4 Fish?

    4. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19392

ok, how's this? Here are the arrival photos of my Woosoo, as I said in the original post, I was selling him in the marketplace pretty much after i received him ... what I DID NOT mention is that my husband FREAKED OUT at how much i spent and pretty much made me sell him. he was so releived i got my $$ back, now he would probably faint w/ horror at how much Woosoos go for :o Firstly, i was an idiot for listening to the husband in the first place (last time I made THAT mistake! in terms of dollfies anyway), secondly, i had no idea that dolls could appreciate in value :doh

    5. Right off the bat when I arrived here - and that wasn't all that long ago, honestly - I managed to mistake a Camine for a Crobi Nia. :facepalm

    6. It looks like a number of my older threads have been deleted, but I think the biggest "newbie moment" would have been the thread looking for advice as to what to do with my brand new YoSD Anne that had just arrived without her limited edition outfit. I had already called and left a message with Volks USA, of course, just to compound my error. And yes, everybody very politely pointed out to me that yo's come naked.

Looking back on silly newbie stuff, I did find something that made me laugh! Very long story made short, I ended up shipping a body to Batchix that I had purchased second hand and had arrived to me broken. Well, anyone who has been on the receiving end of one of my packages would attest that I am a "careful packer." Let me assure you, that if something has gone wrong and I am on "red alert", I go into Super Packing Mode. If the world were to explode tomorrow and the cockroaches were all that were left floating on bits and bobs of debris, upon close examination, one could clearly discern that most of that debris would be my extremely well-packed and still completely intact boxes that happened to be in transit with the Post Office at the time of the cataclysm! Let's just say, I was going to be absolutely certain that no further breakage occurred in shipping. The photostory it inspired: Here.

    7. Lawl, here's one of my very first threads: Best of the Worst?

Huh? Vinyl is different than resin? Whaaa? :doh I'm rather embarrassed by it now, but the folks who responded were SO incredibly kind! Without them I might not still be here, haha.

    8. I was very timid and TONS of reading before posting, but I did have a brainless moment trying to figure out if the eyelashes go in before or after the face up- imagine trying to paint around the lashes!

    9. When I was first introduced to bjds, I was sent to DoA by a friend to learn about the hobby. It was a gothic Angel Region Kai who originally stole my heart and made me pine for the money to afford one of these beautiful, seemingly unobtainable dolls. Who would have thought that 5 years later DoA would be the only site I visit everyday aside from my email, there would be 9 (and 1 on the way!) bjds in the house and I would be devoting 85% of my life to creating clothing for them?
I don't know where I would be now without the sweet help and knowledge of my fellow DoA members. :)

I remember lots of goofy noobie questions, but couldn't find one specific issue.

    10. LOL! It took me so long to figure out what OOAK meant. :sweat Glad I'm not the only one. As soon as I figured it out, I had a total facepalm moment.

Here's my most glorious moment of shining newbie glory : http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107835 (This is so embarrassing.) At that point, I'd only seen two dolls in person, and they were both 60cm girls. I had no clue about the significant size difference between 1/3 and 1/4 dolls! :doh

Another moment of sheer genius on my part ;): http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131647
Notches inside the head... whaaaa-- Ohhhh. *facepalm*

    11. Oh god, I face-palm at all my old posts and have actually "taken care" of some of them XD!

Although just for the sake of this thread, I'll dig up some old ones.

http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=185195 <--- Yay for lots of colours and bolding? XD I also had been really frightened of washing wigs with anything BUT the "special shampoo" -facepalm-

http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184871 <--- I honestly don't even know what I was trying to say ^^'' It confuses even the one who wrote it! Hahah, and same here, obnoxious, colourful font and lots of special bolding =]

I don't miss the newby days ^^'' I've had my fair share of newb moments... Glad most of them were destroyed, haha~

&just to prove I still don't know everything. I just found out what OOAK is LOL. It was bothering me forever. I'm thankful for this thread now XD

    12. My first thread. EVAR. :doh My horrible first impression...
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87751

Dang, I was stupid! Me and my Dollfie Pluses, lol. That was almost three years ago.

It just goes to show that I had NO IDEA what I was doing or what the heck a BJD really was.

    13. My first post ever on DoA-

      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1319879&postcount=17

What do you mean they aren't all the same skin color? (Yes I only skimmed the thread after the first post) :doh

I know asking what matches what is a common question, but when I posted that I was talking about proportions and fit. I had no clue normal skins differed from company to company, often drastically, and at the time Dream of Doll was notorious for having resin that didn't match ANYTHING. I assumed BJD were made for mix-n-match piece swapping and was about to happily skip off and toss a DoT Sha head onto a Delf boybod. How do you think that would have turned out? :sweat

    14. Ha! My best newbie moment involved not knowing the difference between a 1/6 Obitsu and anything else. Actually it happened JUST before I joined DoA, when Aernath was trying to decide to buy Ichigo. I totally freaked at the price and went scurrying to eBay and said "Look! Here's one for $20!" or something. :nowords: Um. Duh.

She was sweet and didn't laugh me off the planet; and shortly thereafter I spent the better part of a month just reading this forum to death before I opened my trap again :sweat

I always advocate reading. Start at the top where it says "Read This First", yes? and move on down....

(oh and I'm with ya on the OOAK thing. I think I actually resorted to someone's eBay guide to get that figured out ).

    15. Well I did a search for early posts, and I think on page 12 I was still in July of this year?
      Um no life much? XD

But I remember asking a girl selling a Volks oldskin Sakura if she had interchangeable elf ears like Sharmin (circa early 2005 or so?) ^_^

      Raven

    16. I AM a newbie. ^__^
So I don't really have any particular posts to dig up.

Some things still confuse me, but I try to do research before posting anything. That way at least I LOOK like I know what I'm talking about... even though I have no idea. XD

    17. My newbie moments just keep on going really.

I have had too many to recall but having bought my first Dollstown Elf I began chatting with other Soph Elf owners and looking at pictures to which I said, 'wow! Your's has knees that pop out'. Well how was I to know that the double joints had were hiding and that was why she fell over alot.

Tragic until.....yesterday:lol: A year or so after having my Twiglimbs body I discovered the interesting and rather useful joints at the top of her legs. Turns out I am a noob nerd for ever.

    18. I had these little moments of panic on when I was was spraying febreeze and then I accidently touched her face with my febreeze-soaked fingers and the sealent came off so I began to panic. (This also happened when I scratched the sealent off her face :o.) Now I'm having a little newbie moment right now on which Mr Super Clear I should use :|{ cause I ordered both Flat and Gloss ( both bring UV protection, I think) so I oddly confused on what difference do they make.} ..

      CAKE!:pcake

    19. So yeah I'm a newbie regardless :)

      MORE CAKE!!:pcupcake:bcupcake:pcake:bcake:smallcake

    20. I was looking at some of my old posts recently... no major faux pas that I can find really, except for the fact that I had a newbie tendency to be overly enthusiastic and used "kawaii!" a lot... ^^;

I must've been so annoying... xD

I'm still kind of a spazz sometimes but thankfully I've toned it down since then.

    21. I looked trough my post, and my favorite one is this one. Yeah, at the beginning, I used MSC inside. all the time. :doh

    22. I still don't know what those abreviations mean ><' lol
i'm sure i've made a complete ass of my self somewhere... my first photo attempts were pretty laughable if that counts?
I dove straight in with no real knowing of BJDs and asked a lot of dumb questions at my first meet... decided i'd rather be humiliated within a smaller group! A lot of the ones already said, Resin/Vinyl what's the difference?, what's MSC? How many sizes do these things come in? There's more companies then just Volks? and thinking that there weren't any girl dolls ¬¬ that was a stupid one...

    23. I remember long ago that I thought Souldoll and Crobidoll were the same company, just with two sites XD

    24. I can't find a lot of my older posts but I made a thread way back in 06 to ask if anyone could identify a head I was buying. Here I thought all one-offs were well-documented by Volks on their website, when they have hundreds a year at multiple stores around the world :sweat

    25. Fortunately, I managed to research answers to my questions before I had the chance to ask them here, so at least no documented newbism around here XD I guess the worst thing I ever did was early on, I had a hard time not being able to imagine what a doll looked like without face ups, and I would neglect to look up other pictures of them. I've since learned my lesson, a face up can completely change how a mold looks, but it sure was frustrating, seeing the pictures and going "ugh, that's nothing like how I want!" then a few days later, seeing some other pictures and going "OH, SO PRETTY!" only to find out it was the same mold I hated before. Flickr is my best friend! XD

    26. The worst one I ever pulled (that I can recall) is asking why people bothered with paint when doing faceups and tattoos -- bring out the sharpies for detail and real makeup, guys!!
      ...
UGH. I still cringe at that post. The only reason why I haven't asked for it to be deleted yet is so that someone else can learn from my mistake.

    27. Tee-hee... This made me giggle. XD I remember being a super noob! I'm still kind of a noob, but at least I'm un-noob enough to answer most of the questions my friends have. XD

When I first joined I didn't understand the concept of fullset dolls, and couldn't figure out why the heck I couldn't order a DOT Shall with her clothing! (It was long sold out XD) Then, of course, I tore through the website and dug up the name "Design JS" (the clothing designer for DOD) and didn't understand why that person didn't sell the clothing at their site (...which, of course, didn't exist. >.>")

Shortly after that I had to have sanding explained to me, because I had absolutely no clue what it was XD I had never seen seem lines on a doll and I was like; "OH GOD SANDING WHAT DOES THAT INVOLVE? WHY DO YOU HAVE TO DO IT? IT CAN KILL ME WHAT?!" (Referring to "toxic resin dust" XDXD)

Oh, those were the good old days, rofl.

    28. ......lol.....I can feel my cheeks going red even now when I think about how much of a twit I was to make this request...:blush.......http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102869&highlight=estella

..........I had Dollstown Estella and couldn't even tell that this was her...lol...and I called her a 'dollfie'....OMG..:blush..I was such a silly newbie back then......:?

      xen :)

    29. Seems my first posts vanished but I remember my beeeest epic newbie moment was one of the first times I visited Dollmore site xD;
And I went to the FAQ asking what's the difference between the Zaoll Luv and the Zaoll Luv Basic -facepalm- I had no notion basically of "French resin" then, so after Jee answered the Luv was French I went on a quest to find out what that was xD

Oh, and also I asked 'could I have flat feet for my Luv please?' -/had seen her presentation pics with the heeled shoes, just to realize afterwards she >had< flat feet-....[/facepalm again]

    30. Oh! I just realized I had a newbie moment!
For a while I've had "SOOM Luo" instead of "Iplehouse Luo" on my doll wishlist.

      *facepalm*
Of course, that might be more of a brainfart moment than a newbie one...

As I'm still learning, I'm sure I'll have my share of newbie trip-ups in the future. ^__^

    31. Several! One time I went to a meet up, took like 45 pictures and posted in the meet up thread (not gallery meet up) one picture in each post, totaling 45 consecutive posts. The other subscribers were livid! ~Gus

    32. i made a thread asking if you use real make up to do a faceup >.>

      durrrr

    33. Hahaha, this thread is full of awesome X3 I guess the reason we all put up with newbs is because everyone put up with us ^.^;;

I don't have a lot of publicly made silliness because I have sort of a phobia to say/post anything on a topic I don't really know about. I have a tendency to search/wait for someone else to ask something before I'll say anything about it >.> but... that doesn't mean I'm without newbie moments. Case and point....
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95991
Oh, looking at this again is sooo embarrassing T_T;; I remember thinking "Omg! I've seen that doll sell for like $800!! Surely there isn't anything amiss..." I didn't even know there were different types of Unoas, let alone different sizes. I was horrified when I realized what I had done. I felt like just disappearing off the face of the earth. I ended up with a badly damaged doll of a completely different type and size from what I thought I was buying, but eventually came to terms with what I had purchased, took the time to get her repaired, and ended up with a gorgeous little doll. Still, I learned so much from that experience. Be careful about what you're buying @_@

    34. One of my first questions before getting a doll was asking something like 'It says this doll takes a '7-8' wig, can they fit in any other wigs?' not realising '7-8' is a measurement, not some sort of label :doh

    35. I just like to read more than post because I'm so new for this kind of stuff ^________^

    36. The main thing that sticks out in my head was back when I had just ordered by fist boy (a full package) I wondered if he would be shipped dressed. Back then the idea of an anatomically correct doll still made me nervous and I was worried that people would be around when he arrived before I could get him dressed. Luckily I managed to get him in his outfit before anyone saw 'the expensive naked and bald doll'.

      I know its weird but that's what sticks in my mind the most. ^^;

    37. I used to get lost on here alot, I couldn't find a post i was looking at before, I couldn't find the list of mods, I couldn't figure out where to post things... lol
the mods were cconstanly moving my threads... sorry mods....

    38. I looked but can't find any example of my newb-ness... I think it was all on JS...

But I guess then when I was such a newb, I thought Volks and CH were the only two companies xD and so I thought I'd never have a BJD. And now thanks to DoA, I have like 20. And no money. Thanks... :P

    39. lol these are so cute ^^ I don't think anyone here has anything to be ashamed about. When I got my first, I was there with a group of people at a friend's place and didn't want them to see him naked and bald either! I tiptoed down the stairs with my expensive box and unwrapped him in a separate room.

    40. Hmm... I'd have to say "Not reading the community vibe correctly or at all" was my worst n00b mistake. It seems like those posts have been lost to time. I don't regret that at all.

    41. Oh my gosh...my worst noob thing ever was in a thread I started back in 2005 or 2006. It was about skin tones and how there were not any darker skin tones available at the time. Well...I was going through all these "race" studies at school for my degree in and I totally took what people were saying way out of context. Needless to say I went back and edited and apologized. Oh my gosh I was terrible! *hugs* to all of you who have tolerated me through my bratty phase <3 I was definitely "not reading the community vibe correctly or at all" with that one.

    42. It was never a post, but it happened right when I got my first doll Maverick (DZ Yuri). He came in the mail, I was so excited, I opened him, got him dressed, had fun taking pictures, and then I was handling him when I finally learned that....bjd's a held together by elastic? *_*
I felt so embarrassed when I told my dollie friends later :blush

    43. Well, I can't find my earliest posts, but I know they mostly had to do with trying to get my Volks SDC Kaede. My dream girl Madoka was just that, totally out of reach because I didn't know shopping services even existed, let alone Yahoo Japan. :doh Anyway, at the time I really thought that I'd be happy with just ONE BJD...I know, crazy right? I did know I loved this new SDC sized doll from the moment I saw her advertised in Haute Doll magazine, but thought she was limited to 20...when that was really the number that Volks was making available for International sale on their website. I remember being completely crushed when the password they gave me wouldn't work and I couldn't buy her. :...( Then I read an article in FDQ magazine that mentioned DoA, and I joined just to post a WTB for this doll, thinking I'd never really be active on this board. And then even though I couldn't figure out the difference between posting and PMing at first, I was able to purchase Kaede. Aside from the fact that no one in my fashion doll club at the time seemed to like her, the hardest thing for me as a newbie was trying to figure out what clothing and accessories would actually fit my SDC girl, since it turned out she was not quite a "standard" size. Thus, I ended up buying a couple of items that were made to fit an SD10 or SD13 girl...but I hung onto this stuff, and now it all fits somebody in my bunch! ;) Even after so many years, and a lot more dolls, if I had it to do all over again, I'd still buy my Kaede and name her "Sugar", because she is and was so special to me, and remains my avatar to this day. :aheartbea

    44. Since I'm pretty sure I'm still a newbie, I think this post will suffice as representation of one of my wince-worthy posts.... ALTHOUGH, I think the worst thing I ever did was start a thread in the completely wrong place (and I thought it was totally ok). A moderator deleted it, I wondered why, and she pmed me explaining where I could find all the information I needed. I went to a different forum where, lo and behold, everything I needed was just a *click* or a search away -____-;; I felt really dumb.

    45. I'm thankful I got most of my doll newbness out of the way BEFORE joining DOA. I don't have any super good silly posts to dig up, but I'm sorta loving this thread. Makes me feel less horrible for all the times I pestered Amb2730 about the silliest things (Like, Asssh! i dunno how to get her head off?).

    46. haha sadly, i am still a noob....only been it for a few months....lol *glomps Candance*

    47. ugh.. u__u;; I have so many awful noob posts it's embarrassing. ;___;'' I'm still pretty much a noob... DX That OOAK thing? Oh my god it took me MONTHS almost a year to figure out what that meant! D: Slow Asu is SLOW.
      >__>; My Hello post had to be the worst.. XD; I thought my EB Beauty model from Volks was on topic. e___e; Thankfully people were nice to me? : D;;

    48. I totally remember this!!! ^_^

      Raven

    49. My newbie thing was i ordered my first doll...a MNF Shiwoo I thought it was a girl...(He looked girly in the imagies!)

Imagine my suprise when he got here...."Mom! It's a guy...I thought it was a girl..."

It was a priceless reaction on my case but i love him all the same...

Oh and i was going to buy him a 60cm outfit...

    50. I never thought there were male dolls when I first got to know BJDs back in 2006. And during that time, I thought there were only 2 companies that made them, Volks and DOD. (I still wasn't in DoA at that time) I always thought Camine was pretty. Didn't occur to me that he was a guy! :o

    51. Well... I did make this thread, freaking out because I couldn't get to the Fairyland page on Luts anymore, which I thought was the only place you could possibly get Minifees....*cough*

    52. Guilty. My first post was so stupid and my second and third LOL. I wish I could delete it. Oh well. I guess it could have been worse.

    53. I don't remember my newbie posts here... but I do remember that before I joined DoA, when I had discovered these dolls, the only site I knew of that sold them was Domuya. I thought that Volks was the only company with just a couple of dolls, and I couldn't tell the difference between the Four Sisters. Imagine my surprise when I get to DoA and see THERE'S TONS OF DOLLS! XD

    54. first day i got my first doll and I was already looking for help! : http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14924 haha that's a very good memory there, I can't help but laugh every time I remember it, I really REALLY freaked out since i didn't know anything about BJDs at that time XD

    55. Oh I have made so many noob boobs I always get the wrong place for my posta and kind kind people gently point me in the right direction! thanks...

I get abit excited and carried away by these dolls and yes I am the I'll just have one!!!!;) however I am up to four with one having cleared customs and one more in the pipeline for october. Who knew... if I have made horrible errors and annoyed or upset folks no-one has said anything for which I am grateful..:aheartbea:smallcake

    56. Wow...this thread is fun....
I remember when i found out that boy dollies actually have "parts"
      I was like " O_O "

    57. |DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
      That is priceless.
