Contest Silhouette Contest [Art/Design]

Jul 9, 2011

    1. Silhouette Contest
      Description
This year we invite you to find inspiration in the theme of one's shadow, and what's a better embodiment of a shadow than a silhouette? As a black image against a white background, silhouetted artwork may be as simple as a single portrait or as elaborate as a whole lanscape scene.

The interpretation is up to you! You may create your image digitally or using traditional media. It may be a backlit photograph or a shape cut out from a paper card. The only requirement is that the final image is a solid dark shape contrasted against a solid light background, oh, and it should be an on-topic ball jointed doll.

      Entry Details

      Who May Enter?
This contest is open to all members who do not currently have any unresolved transactions or other disciplinary measures in place. Members must have jointed the forum before June 30th, 2011.

The contest is also open to all forum staff, however DoA staff may enter for exhibition purposes only.

      Specifications
Each member may submit up to TWO entries, but may only win one prize.

      1. No matter how created, the final images must be sent in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side, with resolution of 72 dpi. Oversized images or images sent in the wrong format will be disqualified. Clarification: the final image should be BLACK and WHITE.

      2. The doll in the image must belong to you. You may not use stock photography or other members' dolls. You may however, utilize stock ornament and design elements to create frames.

      3. Images must be created specifically for this contest and not be previously published elsewhere.

      4. Images must not contain doll or doll owner's names, watermarks or any other identifying signature violating the anonymity of the submission.

    2. Does the backround need to be a soild siold? IE does it need to be blue or can for example i use a dark blue fading into a light blue for the backround?

    3. Considering that the final image is black and white, you may start with any background as long as in the final image there is stark contrast between the background and the silhouette.

    4. Could I use multiple dolls of my own in one silhouette image?

    5. Absolutely! It would be wonderful to see a multiple figure composition done in this style.

    6. Oh, I think I misunderstood the basics on a first reading! - So, the ENTIRE picture must be the black-and-white silhouette?

Or, would it be acceptable to have a silhouette featured in a regular color photograph?
(As its main focus, of course.)

    7. The entire picture should be black and white (or black and the shades of gray if the the original background contains gradients). If an original color photograph is used, it should be desaturated. The key is having the black outline of the main figure or figures against a contrasted background.

    8. Could I draw the picture, pixel art, painting etc? Or must it only be a backlit photograph or paper cutting?
Could the final image have a background light pink instead of white like silhouettes against a sunset?, or may highlight colors of a light source be on the edges of the silhouette?
Must the subject/s be recognizable sculpts or just recognizable as ball jointed dolls?

    9. You may take a photo of actual dolls, do a digital drawing, paint with real paints or pencils then scan it, cut a sheet of paper or metal and then photograph it - anything you wish as long as the final image is a digital version of your artwork in black and white.

As far as the subjects, as long as they are on-topic BJDs and belong to you personally, anything will do. It may be very realistic or very abstract, it's up to you.

    10. The form is now available!

    11. In still confused with one question: so the background must be white and the silhouette is black? What if the doll would be black and, for example, the pendant on her next is white?

    12. I'm also curious about this...is it alright to use black and white shapes dynamically throughout the picture, or should it just be solid black figures on a white background?

    13. It is perfectly fine if a black silhouette has a white contrasted element which adds to the overall concept. For example, traditional 18th century silhouette art often had a black profile of the person with white lace and jewelry within the black shape.

    14. If your concept requires multiple shapes throughout the picture, please go ahead an express your vision, as long as the final shapes are flat against the contrasted background.

    15. That helps a lot, thank you! <3

    16. I'd like to make sure gradients of gray are okay in my submission. See, mine was done entirely with a flashlight through shapes cut out of cardboard, and my doll, of course. So with such a focused beam, the middle is brighter than the outsides of the beam, hence the gradients of gray in between. The photograph has been turned into 'grayscale' instead of 'rbg' mode and desaturated completely, so there's absolutely no color in it other than shades of white and black.

      So this is okay?

    17. It sounds great! Yes, the gradients of gray are okay.

    18. I had a question about the prize. I know there is an option to opt out, but what does that actually entail? Does that mean it'd go to the next person or would we be able to give it away to a friend?

    19. If the person who won the contest prize opts out, the prize goes to the person who has received the next maximum number of votes. The rules of the contest prohibit selling or trading away the prize. Strictly speaking, nobody can prevent the winner from gifting the prize to a friend, although that would constitute poor sportsmanship in the eyes of those who have honestly competed for it. :)

    20. Thanks for the clarification! I tried to submit my second form but I keep getting this error: "Error, you have exceeded limit for number of times this form can be submitted."

    21. I'm so sad I missed the deadline for this one. :...( Life got in the way. I'll definitely be voting though. Good luck, everybody!

    22. I was so ready for this one. I had taken the pictures for it but I couldn't find the usb cord to my camera >.< its a terrible case to miss a chance. Still haven't found it yet so I can't even try for the other contest

    23. Everybody who have submitted their entries - thank you and best of luck! And for those who missed this one, don't despair: you can always use the prompt for your personal inspiration!

    24. Can't you take out the sd memory card and load it from there?
I meen for the other contests...

    25. Is the vote for this going to be in a different thread or in this thread?

    26. Will the voting happen soon...?

    27. Where is the voting for this thread? It's the 18th today...

    28. I was wondering that as well. But I'm going to hazard a guess that with the forum suddenly developing a bad bug in the Marketplace area -- things going to the wrong subforum -- the mods may have had their hands full for a few days!

    29. I'm waiting as well... XD This should be really fun to look at! :3

    30. I hope the voteing starts soon

    31. Well I took it upon myself to be my usual insufferable busybody, and asked one of our mods. I had this response:

I figured there had to be technical glitches going on, and apparently I was right. But soon! :)

    32. Thank you... Off to see and vote! ^^

    33. Awesome! I'm off to vote as well.

    34. Awww I missd teh deadline by just a few days.

    35. Good luck everyone! I'm sad that I can only vote for one of them. :(

    36. Yay! Went and voted. It was tough, but I found the one I liked the best. Good luck to all the beautiful entries! :)
