Sidhe Queen- 1st ever faceup. Critique welcome

Aug 2, 2018

    1. This is the first faceup on a BJD I've ever done and I'm pretty happy with the results. It's not perfect, and I'd love to know what you all think! Constructive criticism is welcome!

    2. Really nice job on the makeup patterns. You have a really good fundamental artistic understanding of "where things go" which means that you're already half way there. This is a great and this is super awesome for a first try. Mine was nowhere near as good. Also A+ for vampire doll. I like vampire ice queen as a concept. LOVE the subtle glitter too that's really creative.

Tip 1: I would (personally) avoid using pencils for nose blushing or inside the nose/under eyes and use another shade of tannish pastel (I build blush with multiple shades of the same color family). For the ear blushing follow the curves of the inner ears for blush and apply to the lobe or top as you desire. I love pointed ear dolls and always tip their cute ears (just a personal preference).

Tip 2: to make lines thinner, you can actually use an eraser on colored pencils and pastels (between layers of course) if it's too thick for facial lines/uneven or if it goes out of the lines. I also use water and a qtip to remove pastel mistakes between layers. Faceups can be pretty forgiving if you know the secrets!

Final tip 3: for the brows (awesome job doing the hair strokes btw your patterning is perfect) when doing whites and strokes, less is more (even for heavy brows and using white).

Overall though, if that's try 1 you're in for a great time learning as a faceup artist!

    3. Thanks so much for the feedback! I'll keep the blushing on the nose in mind for next time I do her faceup. I did struggle a bit with that part and her eyebrows. I tried using pastel to fix the brows, but it got progressively worse with each layer lol.

Thinking about doing her over again, but I wana let this face up sit for a while too haha decisions decisions

    4. If you put down a pastel base layer first for the brows and then erase if you make your shape. When you’re happy, seal it so when you draw you’ll have your guide and still and its MUCH easier and you can get that dual look of blue and white. Just sharpen your white pencil and use light strokes in the pattern base you already have (and remember you can erase them too if you mess up).

Yes best to sit and admire it for a while and then when the mood strikes break out the acetone free nail polish remover and go wild

    5. Thanls! I've heard acrylic paint remover works better? Do you have any youtube channels that have tutorials you'd recommend? Besides Andreja at Nicole's dreams lol

    6. sadly no lol. I kind of self learned before the era of dolltube

    7. I really love the aesthetic you went for, well done for a first faceup it looks really nice! :D

I second what IpLemons said for tips, and I'd add on another suggestion: for very thin lines like the eyebrow hairs I use a tiny brush and pick up the colour from the pencil tip with a tiny drop of water. This allows me to have smoother lines so you don't get the pencil texture. However I know a lot of people use the pencil itself, I just never managed to make it work so I prefer using a brush. To find brushes this small look for ones for scale models, they come in super tiny size and you can find them in stores that sell scale models and well supplied art stores.

For corrections in between layers I'd avoid using acrylic paint remover as it would likely also remove the sealant. If you're using pencils, watercolour and pastels a q-tip with water or an eraser are enough. If you use acrylics you can't really remove them without having to start over as anything that removes acrylics also removes sealant.
As for youtube tutorials I'm not sure what to suggest as I also mostly learned by myself, but if you haven't yet look through the tutorials section in the Workshop here on DoA, there are some really useful threads!

    8. Lol ok, no worries!

    9. That’s an amazing first face up :D
I love the icey vampire theme you’ve got going, I would have never guessed it was your first time! However underneath the eyes it seems like it’s missing something compared to the rest of the piece ( maybe a lack of eyelashes or something of the sort..):)

    11. Thank you I have some white lashes on there, maybe next time I will make them more apparent ^^

    12. Thank you so much! As cool as that would be, Freckles don't really fit the character ^^ thank you for the suggestion!
