Maintenance Should I replace a hot glued string in a large doll?

Mar 2, 2026

    1. (This will eventually be a thread of me restringing dolls.)

When I got a certain large doll, his leg string was loose. Not "floppy", but loose, he could not stand. This is my first doll that is strung through the hip. I cut the string because it was WAY too long and there was hot glue covering the knots. But, now I am thinking of replacing the string because of the amount of hot glue that is left on. If I have to cut the string again, to get rid of ALL of the glue, it'll be too short to re-string him. I'm hoping that he uses the same string size as my mini dolls. I wish I photographed the knot before I cut it.

I wish I could pay someone to do it because I know nothing about hot glue. Do you think that there's a chance for that at the doll con? Should I join a meet up? I don't want to leave him as "incapable of sitting" due to being unstrung.
I don't know if I could zip tie the knots or something?? (Instead of using hot glue.) He's roughly 70cm. (One of my other 70cm+ might need re-stringing, but it's his through the neck and he's just floppy. Maybe he can wait another year?)

    2. This is the first I ever head of using hot glue *on* the strings - without knowing what doll it is, I'll leave 1% for uncertainty but I'm 99% sure it is not needed there at all. Maybe it was just residue from the joints being hot glue sueded? In any case, you should just be able to restring with fresh elastic and make normal knots - a 70cm doll will not take the same size as minis, though. A 1/3 doll usually takes 4mm for body + 3.5mm for the arms so an uncle-sized body will need this or larger diameter. If you share the maker and sculpt, it'll be much easier to give you more exact info re: elastic type and stringing system.

If you don't want to restring yourself, you could look out for a meetup in your area and ask beforehand if someone could help you out. I know folks have also offered it as a service on DoA marketplace, so that's also an option to look into.

    3. I've also NEVER heard of hot glue being used on the elastic. That is super strange. You can just tie a knot.
There's also tons of restringing tutorials around and they are pretty universal in technique. It seems daunting but once you start, it's not too bad! I can do it even with my weak, disabled hands if I also use my feet lmao

    4. Thank you both. I have to admit, if it's superglue, then it's stronger than what I've been using as super glue. He's not sueded, but he will need that or some wire.

Since my mini doll is still unstrung, I compared the strings. Large doll's string is larger. Took the measurements [of both dolls, knowing that the string for the mini will now be 3mm] and it's looking like he might be 5mm in the legs. The arm string is maybe smaller.
I mean I could be mistaken and maybe he's 4mm for the legs, but I brought out my 4.0mm crochet hook and the cord's diameter looks larger than the hook, too. (I also tried marking some paper on both sides of his cord and measuring the distance. It came out to 6mm. Yeah, the outside of a pencil/pen was going to add bulk to the measurement.) I probably need to take a reference picture with the crochet hook.

Please note that my measurement of the diameter was NOT under tension / "under load".

I am thinking of temporarily stringing him with 3mm cord or some other string until I get the new cord.
To pick him up, I brace his one leg against my body, pull his string taught at his other leg, and balance his lower back and butt in my hand other hand at the same time. :o I need to find his other leg!

    5. 5 or 6mm definitely makes sense for this size and I think your measurements are correct - 4mm is what a 60cm doll would usually use, that's just the best reference point I had :sweat Definitely get fresh elastic in the same size as you measured - using a smaller gauge will just feel floppy no matter what you do. Good luck with restringing!

    6. New Thank you, all.
