I've had 2 packages returned back to me in the last 12 months by the Spanish Customs Service. I wonder if anyone has the same problem shipping to Spain from United States? I had everything needed with the package, including the invoice both inside the both, and in a pouch taped to the outside of the box. I also emailed my buyer the image of the custom form and the invoice to hand to their customs office, but the boxes were still returned to me...
What was the reason given for the returns? Sometimes the buyers either refuse to pay or are unprepared for the customs fees charged by their government and let a package sit unclaimed long enough that it is returned to the sender.
Correos (the Spanish post) has also been a bit erratic and their customs handling company has been changed this past summer, from Speedtrans to Correos itself again. There were many complaints about Speedtrans, some of them were that they would neglect notifying the recipients of their parcels, or being so slow that the time margin for the package would expire and they'd be returned to the sender. These complaints are the main reason they fired the company. Another issue is that Speedtrans centralised package handling in Madrid, so people from other parts of the country would have to make trips of several hours and lose work time if they had any problem with Speedtrans. It was an altogether ugly business. So it's entirely possible that your parcels, if they were sent in the first half of this year, would have been returned because of the incompetence of Speedtrans, or returned while the handover to Correos was being processed. (There are apparently people who refuse to pay customs charges, however. This is specifically the reason why some websites like Thinkgeek do not ship here)
Thank you sukeban My parcels were indeed got rejected repeatedly in the spring. That explains a lot. BTW, my buyers were eager to claim the packages are ready to pay the tax, so it wasn't the buyers' fault. I refunded each of them.
Also, I found this link from eBay sellers discussion thread. http://answercenter.ebay.com/question/International-Trading/Shipping-Items-Spain/1000228491 I think I will hold off shipping to Spain, just to air on the safe side.
Well, the problem was Speedtrans and that has already been taken care of now. ^_^; Actually, nowadays you don't have to make any paperwork if your package under 150€ falls into Customs, you just get the package *and* the invoice at the same time from the postman, so if anything, it should be even more transparent for senders abroad.
