~20cm Dolls Shine: 11cm-ish Dolly (12/19 Update)

Jun 10, 2015

    1. Hey Everyone! I wanted to work on dolly stuff again but didn't feel like working on Mia at the moment (I know, shame on me!! ), so I pulled out some pieces of another project I was working on during the meantime plus some other little bits and bobbles from various failed projects and got to working on a tiny-tiny, which I have always wanted to do. Usually my biggest problem when working on doll projects (or any project for that matter) is just getting started and in the groove. Thankfully, since I'm using stuff that I've made months ago, I've already passed that hurdle before I even realized it XD

Note that in the pics you'll see that I'm using beads for the joints. I know that a lot of people will just drill the beads and cast, but I think when I get to that point, I'm going to do a junk cast since resin will more stable when modifying such small parts. I think I'm also going to grab some sculpey in the the future when I work on the hands and feet (the ones in the pictures I had from other projects but help stand in with proportions) since those are also so tiny. I'm eventually going to do a head or two but for now you can see my old Puki Pipi fp size, poor Anabel! XD Btw, the standing pictures aren't strung at all! Yay for balance!

    2. That body is so cute!! And it's awesome that it stands without even string :-o I applaud you!

    3. Thank you! Just don't sneeze in its direction though, haha, those beads are slippery little suckers XD

    4. Hello everyone! I've gotten back on track with this little body and still kinda ignoring Mia (my SD head lol, I'm bad). So last time I updated I had the legs all done and actually did a test stringing (which you'll see in the pics) just to check out proportions. I actually was pretty amazed that I had a fairly solid little doll in my hands! However, promptly after that stringing, I bought some sculpey firm, said screw that to those legs and made new ones, lol. As much as I loved the chunky old legs, I decided I wanted something a little more curvy, a bit more streamlined, so I made new legs, with some pretty rad joints if I do say so myself ^^. I also worked on the torso and made a small lock to let the body lean back and forth plus I made a pair of feet. In the pics of the test stringing I also show the beginnings of a pair of arms I made, but I think I might scrap those too in favor of a sculpey pair. When I get to it, I want to make a kitty set of paws/ears/faceplate and of course work on a head.

But enough babble, on to pics!

Pretty Flexible for a body with no stringing slots!

Here's a few inspiration doodles. As you can see, my plans aren't exactly concise X3 Oh and it was dark by the time I took this so sorry for the lighting!

Feet! Not bad for a first try :3 They need work, but they'll do and NAILS! Needs a pedicure X3

I was actually able to join sculpey to paper clay, which is rad. I used Elmers/pvc/school glue, did a quick coat on the paperclay and sculpey and was able to attach.

Comparison between the old and new legs, sculpey on the picture's left and old paperclay to the right.

I'm ridiculously proud of this leg joint, it doesn't look like much in the pictures, but it looks really good and has a nice shape in person.

And finally, here's what I have so far compared to my scribbles. Still need to work on the doll's right leg, but I'm getting there!

    5. Howdy Toonsters!

Ok long time no talk (as usual, lol) so I'm gunna get straight to the pics! This will be done in two posts since I have a lot to share ^^

This first set is from a few months ago when I had finished both knee joints. I wanted to show off their flexibility, but these eventually get scrapped for an updated pair.

    6. And here's part two, which catches us up to where I am at the moment:

I worked on a head back and face plate for our little doll (for some reason I can't find the progress pics I took), reworked the knees to make them a bit more consistent (new knees on top), fleshed out the thighs, started on the core of the arms, and made mold for joints to replace the wooden beads I was using as a substitute.

As you can see, I also had a little help taking pictures X3
      [IMG]

A couple nights ago and last night I added ears to our cute little face (eeeee, i love them soo much!), smoothed out the inside of the headback and faceplate while adding a small notch system at the chin (it's hard to see) to help keep the faceplate on, made a few joints to start replacing the beads, and fleshed out the arms which are still being worked on atm. I then proceeded to do a test stringing and screwed around with posing a bit X3 Note that only one of the knee joints is fully carved because the other was starting to crack and will probably need to be remade.
