Spoiler: EDIT: Here's the finished boi! (+ knife-wielding corgi friend I just placed an order for a Dream Valley Rah who’s pretty spot-on for an oc from my book series. I’m not gonna see Rah for a good long while, sadly, but that doesn’t mean I can’t go ahead and start making props for him. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Meet Webb. He’s dead. (art by me) Anyway. His sword (the one with the heart pommel) is what I’m going to be trying to make in MSD scale. I haven’t sculpted anything in a very long time, so this’ll be interesting. Here we goooooo~ Edit: I’m gonna make his sheath thing and mask too, after I’m done with the sword. He's also going to need his scar done. Edit: So originally, I was going to make his sword out of polymer clay, but then my sister was like "Hey, you know I can just cast this thing out of resin for you and make it SPARKLY, right?" Soooo change of plans. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Materials have been purchased and sent to my sister. I'll probably get the finished cast mid-March next time I see her. I'm still going to have to add the gem pommel as well as sand, paint, and mod the finished cast with Apoxie. Sword To-Do: Aquire materials (DONE!) Resin casting (DONE!) Modding (DONE!) Painting/Staining/Glossing (DONE!) To-Do Once Doll Arrives: Sword sheath and strap (DONE!) Make mask (DONE!) Paint his little jellyfish buddy (in canon, he has a ghost moon jellyfish that lives inside of him...) (DONE!) Face-up. Chest and back scar. Spiderweb Tattoo (DONE!) I kinda want to get him a little bjd corgi friend... (DONE!)
I would love to follow your progress! I'm going to be attempting to make props for my warrior, so this will be so much fun to watch!
@lividdarkangel @yafashelli Thank you both! I’m just playing the waiting game now while my supplies arrive! Yafashelli, good luck with your project! I’d love to see how it turns out~
Not a very exciting update, but I made a skele-sword! The heart gems are one-sided, so I'm going to glue two together to make a 3-dimensional gem for the pommel. I'm so happy with the scale of them, they're perfect! Next step is to cover it all in polymer clay and do some sculpting!
It's looking cool so far! If your gems are plastic, its a better idea to glue them on after its baked so they don't melt in the oven. (I had this happen. Not on a major project, fortunately.)
Thanks! And haha, I know. They’re not glued on yet and won’t be for a while. I’ve learned that lesson before too.
I'm back! With a small update and a change of plans. So originally, I was going to make his sword out of polymer clay, but then my sister was like "Hey, you know I can just cast this thing out of resin for you and make it SPARKLY, right?" Soooo change of plans. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Materials have been purchased and sent to my sister. I'll probably get the finished cast mid-March next time I see her. I'm still going to have to add the gem pommel as well as sand, paint, and mod the finished cast with Apoxie. There will definitely still be work to be done!
Your sword idea is really nice :O The red gem looks good, can't wait to see how it will end. Will you use some let for the lightning effect ?
I too have a talented awesome sister. I invited her to a doll show, mind you she is not in the hobby. She modded one of my dolls, did her face-up, entered the doll and her photograph of the doll and won 2nd place on her photograph and an honorable mention on her diorama with the doll mod. She will go with me to shows still, but just to hang out and take pictures. She loves photography, but thinks the dolls are too expensive of a hobby for her.
Thanks! I don’t really have any plans for the lightning (or making his halo either). I think I’m just gonna… pretend it’s there lol. That’s such a great story! Funnily enough, my sister is the one that got me into the BJD hobby haha.
Sister just sent me pics of the first pour! Man, still images do NOT do justice to how gorgeous and FIERY that glitter is! And here's a sketch of what the finished/modded cast should look like compared to the original illustration after I finally get my hands on it... Aaa so excited~ Spoiler
That looks amazing!!! I bet you're extatic! I'm very much looking forward to seeing this come to fruition!
Oh definitely! And all the accEssories that I will *hopefully* finish haha (fingers crossed that the scale will work!)
This is amazing! I really wish the pictures could do that resin justice, it looks like it has such potential for sparkal xD I also must admit that you have me intensely curious about this "little jellyfish buddy" that's just a comment on the to do list!
Haha thank you! I get to finally see the finished casts in person for the first time today and I am excited~ And uh… Yeah in his story he’s got a little ghost jellyfish that lives inside of him. …Yep. I purchased a suuuuuper tiny jellyfish figure from Etsy and I’m going to paint it to look like a moon jelly and then it’s just going to stay inside of him.
OooooOOOooo so very exciting!! You'll have to tell us how they look in person xD Awwww, that sounds creepy but cute at the same time lol! Gotta include it, to stay true to the character!
Even just in the photos those sparkles look amazing, can't wait to see it finished! The character himself seems cool too, I hear "he's dead" and I'm immediately interested lol
@Kiwifie Thanks! Hehe, yeah in this series, he's a ghost who fights monsters in the afterlife... with a sword. It makes sense, I promise. Anywho. Swords! My sister made six casts in total and they all turned out super pretty! Since all the casts were only one-sided, I sanded and combined two of them with apoxie to make a sword sandwich three-dimensional sword. Prooobably should have sanded the blade part thinner, because it ended up being pretty thick for an actual blade. But I think It still looks neat. I started to sand the hilt to round the handle part out a bit. Next step is sculpting with apoxie! Heart gem ins't attached yet, I was just testing the scale and it's lookin' good! Speaking of testing the scale, here's how it looks with an actual doll! My sparkly red guy, Zenith, might totally end up stealing this thing if Webb doesn't arrive soon... And that's all for now!
Hello hello, it's been a while. Smallish update. Other projects and work have kept me busy. Still in the sanding and modding with Apoxie phase with the sword. I'm so eager to see how it looks all painted~ Buuuut I also made Webb's mask! xux Webb, himself, still hasn't arrived yet (I'm hoping for a shipping notice within the next month or so!), so my wolftaur, Cross, is keeping Webb's gear safe for now~ ...And also Webb's jellyfish buddy.
@Brytewolf Thank you!!! In other news, THE BOI IS HERE. His sword is still a WIP. Still constantly sculpting/sanding/sculpting/sanding... etc. But Webb's face-up, tattoo, and scars are done! Spoiler: CW: Images of scar under spoiler Let me just gush for a second about DREAM VALLEY. OMG their dolls are such good posers! Anyway. Not super happy with the current wig. It's not wavy/poofy enough. Spoiler: Ref image I still have to get started on his scabbard, but we are in the home stretch now! This ghost boy is coming to life (so to speak lol)!
Annnnnd he's done! Here's the finished sword: And here's Webb! He's off to go slay some ghosts now. I'll definitely get some better photos of him later. Now he needs his little corgi friend...
This turned out great! I bet you're very excited and happy about your project coming to a close. Congratulations!
Omg the jellyfish!! I so want to see this! Please do post pictures when you're done! Amazing job (both you and your sister!). And it's really so SPARKLY!
@moonlightnocturne Thank you! Yep I'm very happy (and ready for a nap lol)~ :3 Here's the jelly buddy~ It is very teensy haha, and just lives inside Webb's head for now.
Hello! Random update, but now Webb is officially complete! I needed to get him a different wig (and some new eyes!). The original bowl cut wig was so not him. This one is near perfect! I also got him his little corgi sidekick, Nugget, from Etsy (and she even has her own little red dagger~)
have you ever made a kind of tutorial? I have some characters in mind and they are going to need weapons.
Nope, I’ve never made a tutorial. But here’s the basic gist! My sister cast the sword for me using a sword mold from Amazon (she used resin, red mica powder for color, and red glitter). I’ve never ever cast anything, so I have no idea what that process entails, haha. But Amazon has all kinds of resin molds! Due to the mold only being two-dimensional, I had to combine two casts using apoxie clay like a sandwich to make a full three-dimensional sword. (Note to self: I should’ve sanded the two halves thinner because the sword ended up kind of thick… Oh well.) Then I modded the cast to make it look like less of a default sword and more like my character’s sword by sanding parts of it and adding to it with apoxie clay. The heart gem was bought from Amazon. Then I painted the hilt, and glossed over the entire sword to make it shiny. And the dog’s dagger was nabbed from a Walking Dead action figure and simply painted red. That one was easy lol~
Wow I didn't know Amazon had those molds... I think I'm going to check but thank you so much! Nice sword btw.
